iPhone 2.0 software has been unlocked!

Lift your hats once again to the iPhone Dev Team, who have succesfully unlocked iPhone Software 2.0.

The team has been working on unlocking Apple's iPhone software for months, and the current build is stable and effective - a Gizmodo reporter has been using his iPhone (using beta of v.2) for a week on the Vodafone network, rather than through AT&T.

The team intends releasing a new version of its free Pwnage tool so others can unlock and jailbreak their handsets for use with unapproved applications on non-official networks.

We are waiting with baited breath and bricked iPhones.

Bragging rights on previous generation hardware.

Am I missing something now that the 3G is out? What sense economically does it make to unlock a 3G after paying for the service contract? Wouldn't it be cheaper (or reasonably close in $) to pay the early termination of your current contract and then get an iphone? Or who's going to brag that they've got a 1st gen. unlocked iphone that doesn't do 3G, GPS, or the other things that the next iphone will do when it comes out in December? And really, who's going to write any truly quality apps for hacked iphones that they could make some serious money for by posting it on the Apps store?

The way I see it Apple has effectively cut the ground out from underneath the iphone hackers now.

Who wants to buy a hacked NES now that the Xbox 360 is out? I'm also selling a Ford Pinto with illegal tires on it that you can only get from the Warez sites.

Uhh those of us who are on

Uhh those of us who are on T-mobile maybe?

or those of us not wanting to

or those of us not wanting to get screwed overseas.  Or who want pps like Fring

I don't know that I would

2022

I don't know that I would equate 3G and GPS to the differences between a NES and an Xbox360... and if you don't live in one of the limited 3G-covered areas, then the difference is even less.

As for the App store... you pay $100 up front, Apple takes a 30% cut, Apple imposes restrictions on the kind of app you can sell and how your app will run, *and* there's a 6-month waiting list to get in the store. I'd say the jailbreaking community will remain quite vibrant for the foreseeable future.

6 month wait doesn't add up

2222

Just a week ago Apple published that anyone who wanted to submit an app for consideration on opening day must have it submitted to Apple by noon on July 7th. How can there be a 6 month wait if companies could have submitted an app just a week ago and had it posted on the APP Store today?

As for saying the 30% cut imposed by Apple on Software developers is prohibitive doesn't make sense to me either for two reasons. One, well over 100 apps right now are free. Two, Ebay/Paypal keeps a percentage and we certainly haven't seen a majority of people stick to their garage sales instead of auctioning them off.

probz!

The 2nd comment dude is way too unconcern about what other desperate buyers in countries dont have official launch of iphone. At least the first gen hacked iphone can continue to use their prefered network in 2.0. American. ish. I'm sorry, not all but this particular one.

Bragging Rights?

2023

Bragging rights? DO some research into what you're talking about buddy. Obviously apple doesn't approve all apps for the app store and many of the apps in the store are lame. Installer had some great apps that I can't wait to get my hands on again. And as far as putting the original iphone down like that, it's still superior to any other phone out there. Like I said before, do your research.
