ipod nano

It turns out a whole helluva lot. Apple announced this week that their iPod Nanos were starting out at $149. If you think about it, the amazing thing is what $149 has been able to buy you over the last two and a half years.

In January of 2005, only 32 months ago, Apple unveiled the Gen 1 iPod Shuffle.  They came in at the $99 for 512MB and $149 for One Gigabyte.  The shuffles are screenless and small plastic items that could play music and hold a few files, that's it.  Still they were a big sellers.

A little over a year and a half ago, Apple released the 1GB nano at $149.  Again, huge success - big seller.  Now you could view your music and navigate your collection.  You'd soon be able to look at pictures, browse contacts and calendar and even play some games.  All for $149.

Last year, Apple doubled the storage on the miniscule MP3 player and added some fun colors and an aluminum enclosure.  For $149 you could get a 2GB Silver Nano.

This week, Apple put a much larger screen and impressive new array of features in a superslim, almost two dimensional package.  These devices are more functionally rich than the original iPod video (sans HD space).   You can watch movies, browse using coverflow, play games. The new video enabled Nano starts out at, yep...

$149

Imagine what your $149 will be able to buy in another 32 months!

go touch a new nano... it is the smallest thing i have ever seen.... dont flaunt your ignorance in a public place. the new nano is so thin that you cant even feel it in your pocket. its ways less then 50grams how much smaller could you get? DON'T BE STUPID!

haha you are an idiot

try holding one. i would compare it to umm...holding a postage stamp? remarkably remarkably tiny. this thing is about as nano as you can get

actually the new nano occupies a little less space than the original nano.

the difference to the aluminum nano is 0,0169 cubic inches,
roughly the size of your brain ...

go man!

GREAT answer!!! :)

hehehehe... it almost made the flame worth! :))

When I saw the leaked/mockup pics on the web...I was skeptical, but my only hope was that the resolution would have had to be the same and the size of that iPod would have had to be veeeeeeeeeeeery small. AND THAT'S IT!! Grrrrrrreat Steve!!!

now a proposal to the wind:

give the 2G iPod touch (I know...I am insatiable!) Bluetooth and google rotating maps so that we can connect OS X compatible GPS bluetooth mobile to them and save battery for music and videos....but having a fully featured and....touchy GPS!
AND MAYBE TELLING US WHERE TO GO with OS X voices through the speaker of our iPhone or earphones of our iPod touch 2G!!! :))

I wrote it to Apple...you'll never know :))

ciao!

Is the software for the new NANO compatable with the new Windows Vista user software???

Interestingly enough the new

Interestingly enough the new iPod Nano is smaller volume then the first or second generation one. So not so much bigger...

New Nano is awesome

2119

I picked up an 8 gb in red last night and I love the thing. I have a 30 gb Video but needed something for working out and running. This Nano is perfect for it. Not that the 2nd gen Nanos weren't great but this one is unbelievable. Everybody I show it to loves it. I think if you try one you'll be very surprised by how much you like it.

kash you're an idiot

I wonder how Steve Jobs and Apple survived to this day without your precious insight and analisys....

Just love it

1719

Yeah I can't believe the price on these things it is insane. I remember buying my 1GB shuffle right after the price drop for $129 and it was on sale or something at amazon for $100. I felt like I had just got the best deal ever.

If it were not for the iPod touch I would have bought an 8GB in a heart beat, but I have to have the best. Though this will be more then enough for most people, and will also make that great 'second iPod' for others.

Creative is going to quit

2017

With the very low price of new ipod lineup, it is very difficult for other competitors to survive.

Take the new Creative Zen as an example, 8GB for $349 and 16GB for $499. You can get about the same feature from nano 8GB at a smaller screen, but 40% off the price. Or you can get ipod touch with much better feature at $50-100 cheaper. With $50 more you can get an iphone 8G.

i think the new nanos are a

2517

i think the new nanos are a great device. the only thing from the event i was disappointed in was the ipod touch. I'm sorry i know they wanted thin but it just doesnt have enough space/features for the price. 8 gb is fine in a phone because phones don't need it and your not going to put your entire music collection in a phone but if i remember correctly the cool thing about ipod when they were first becoming popular was that they would hold ALL of your music. Should people who love music be forced to not have all of their music on a music playing device? Now i know alot of people don't have more than 16 gb of music but apple doesn't usualy give only one option for their players i mean they're not microsoft with the "you only get a 30 gb option, sucks if you want more music and maybe some video". that was one of the biggest selling points of the ipod was they had more than twice the storage. and im not saying im not going to buy a 160 gb version i totally will im just saying tehy should make it bigger than 16 gb.

Macmanager - i totally

2016

Macmanager - i totally agree. Ive been holding out to replace by 2nd generation 15gig ipod with the ipod touch, to discover it only had a max size that is 1gig larger then my 5 yr old (base model) ipod. I love everything about it, except the limited capacity.

And i know the classic is available for those who want more storage, but i want storage AND features. 30gigs would have been enough for me.

New name?

1621

How about FatPod Slim? :)

I think what people are

1517

I think what people are missing with the iPod touch is battery life. Hard drives guzzle a lot of juice, which doesn't leave too much for WiFi and that ginormous multitouch screen. The 2G nano's battery lasts for a whopping 24 hours despite the fact that the device is the size of a mint wafer because it uses NAND Flash.

Hard drive players are on their way out - at a certain point (say, 160gb), the size advantage of hard drives becomes a moot point because no one has enough content to put on their handheld devices at the resolution that said devices are capable of displaying. Except for the odd audiophile who stores everything in lossless, 160 gigs is nearing overkill for everyone.

agreed

2415

i completely agree. 160GB is overkill. but i think 30-60 gb is the sweet spot for most people. so the touch is going to need to double before it catches on with the hardcore apple enthusiasts.

Sweet spot

1622

I agree that 30 to 60GB may be the 'sweet spot' in terms of giving the power user enough storage and thus win over the entire market. But I think 20GB is enough for the general population. The Touch is already at 16GB, which is already pretty much there.

In a couple of years, an improved 3G Touch will have 32GB and cost under $299. That will be very nice...
