iPod as seen from space

OK, we know astronauts like to take their iPods with them - the European Space Agency even launched an iPod playlist competition last year - but this picture's interesting in a different way.

You see, what we have here is a picture of an iPod on the flight deck of the Space Shuttle Endeavour as photographed by the crew on board the International Space Station. To the left of the picture you can clearly see that tell-tale white iPod sitting on the flight deck. It's the first time an iPod's been photographed inside one space vehicle by someone in another.

On a tenuously related note, check out the internet clamor greeting the sale of the most expensive iPod shuffle ever seen. Auctioned by Norwegian jeweller Thomas Heyerdahl in a charity auction (to raise cash for the Soil Association), the £20,000 music player and earplugs are made of 18-carat white and pink gold and encrusted with 430 diamonds.

Doesn't look much like an iPod to me

3946

Unless that's a 1st or 2nd Gen, and even then it looks nothing like one, I don't think that's an iPod at all.

of course, I could be wrong!

oops

3950

On second thoughts and a closer look!!!

I'm wrong!

Docking Station!

2844

Gives a whole new meaning to "docking station" doesn't it. I gotta get me one of them!

the Zune will likely never be a high flier.

3943

The Zune will likely never be as elevated.

Theft warning!

4945

How many times do we have to be told not to leave valuable things on the dashboard where they can be seen through the windshield?  I think a hoodlum doing a smash-and-grab would be an extremely unforutunate turn of events for this otherwise carefree traveler.

FAKE!!!!

3853

FAKE!!!! That's such an obvious photoshop job I laughed so hard had I been drinking milk it would have come out of my nose. Everyone knows all the shuttle missions are faked as well. Man can't survive in space.

U are fake.

6036

That's such a complete bullshit that I laughed so hard had I been drinking milk it would have come out of my ears.

iPod in space playlist?

3948

Space Poddity? (Ground Control to Major Jobs??)

Also Pod Zarathustra?

sorry, I've run out of bad humour for the day ....

Fake? Are you kidding??

3446

The link for that pic takes you to NASA's website.  The photo is not even on thier site to showcase the iPod.  It just happens to be sitting there.  It is not fake by any means.  Why is it so hard to believe we can survive in space?  What is NASA and the rest of the world accomplishing by telling us we have men and women in space if there lying to us?!  And how do you know man can't survive in space?  Have you tried it? I haven't, but I'll believe NASA is not lying to us before I believe an "Anonymous Coward"

The Potatoe....

3941

All this cafuffle brings to mind a statement from the late philosopher, Bertrand Russell. Around the time of the first moon landings, he was asked what he thought of the journey into space. He said, "the potatoe, as long as we can't make the potato grow in space, we have no future there"

This is a paraphrase based on rubbish memory...

But I guess it would be true to consider that 10,000 tunes in your pocket as you wander along the astral superhighway is no use to no one if they can't grow something to eat.

(It's no fake, by the way)

who cares

3847

wow... that's so... unimpressive.

The "iPod" is...

3141

More than likely it is a small digital multimeter. It seems to be the classic design of a display on the top, large rotary mode/scale switch below that, and then in the bottom corners, recessed banana jacks for the test probes.

Multimetre?

4337

Mini DVOM? That's a stretch :) 'Ockham' must have switched to a Norelco electric shaver.

It's a fairly current hard drive based iPod

Real as it Gets.

3344

Sheesh. It's real.

There have been numerous 'sightings' of iPods on the Shuttle and ISS.
I were going to spend 6 months on the ISS I'd bring several iPods.

Why would anyone at NASA bother to fake something like that?
