Ok, we're a bit dissappointed...AppleTV, especially with its streaming start is going to rule the living room like the iPod rules the MP3 market, no doubt. We don't even watch TV but are getting one of these (anyone know a good TV to pick up?). Time Capsule? Great idea. Not much more than a USB attached wireless router though. We'll still take it. iPod/iPhone stuff. Yeah that's great, already got most of it 3 months ago. Macbook Air. Where to start? The only real configuration to consider is the high end. The low end has the same processor as the old Mac Mini and boots/uses an ipod hard drive running at 4200rpm. slooowwww... So the high end.
That is priiiicey. And why no 160Gb hard drive option? Do I have to rip my iPod Classic open to get that? Also, it is big! Not thick but it has the same footprint as a MacBook. Let's get the screen closer to the edges next time guys. It is still WAY bigger than that Sony TZ. Its not going into anyone's purse like a TZ. Obviously, it is still a work of art and Apple will sell lots and lots. No displays? Really? Has anyone been outside lately? Displays start at about 1/2 of what Apple charges. For the same LCD tech. A good chance to throw an iSight in there as well for a premium. Apple dispays are the best in the business - especially for color correction and such. Give us a consumer 24" display with a camera...oh yeah - the iMac. DRM Free music? Apple is now behind Amazon as the best music store on the net. I have a feeling that this isn't Apple. But still/ MacBook Pros? Nothing? Really? I can't tell the difference between what I am using now and one released 3 years ago. The Mobile Penryns should be hitting soon and now I expect a better multi-touch trackpad. Midrange Mac? I know. Go buy a Dell. iPhone hardware would have been nice. And Blue Ray too. Though with HD Rentals, it is obvious that Apple ain't playing that. And poor WiMAX.... And how did Randy Newman know about the MAcbook Air Rumors?!

$999 for a SSD? That is just
$999 for a SSD? That is just rape
But look at the articles
But look at the articles from CES... all the people pushing SSD failed to deliver. They all basically said that SSD would continue to be at early adopter prices. What is Apple supposed to do? Sell them for a loss?
Go look at Dell's site... a 64GB SSD costs 998:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/System_Drives/productdetail....
So... Apple's not stealing from anyone here... indeed you get an extra 16G for $1
What has happenned there,
What has happenned there, nothing but frustration.
First no Macbook Pro update and a thin Macbook for women working at Avon..:P
Then, a time capsul, wireless of 1TB, it's a router with a harddisk, ok, nice, but have you ever tranfert 100 Gb over WiFi, it takes a long long time, imagine when installing a Mac and want to restore your data, it may take 1 complete day!
And also I have to pay 20$ for 5 apps for my iPod touch and still no games, I feel betrayed!
Apple is loosing it. the stock went down of about 6% today...
What the hell were they thinking!?!?
Time Capsule is a joke. I
Time Capsule is a joke.
I completely agree with you about doing backups over WiFi... having just attempted to do a iTunes library move (80GB) from a PC to a new MB I can attest to the futility...
But beyond that, it's a single disk. Single disks fail. This thing should have a mirrored disk at the very least.
Also... it needs to do more than just backup. Apple really needs to figure out what to do with people's expanding media libraries. This thing, or something like it, needs to be able to host my iTunes library and I need to be able to rip music to it and be able to simply store a disconnected copy on my macbook and iPod rather than the current approach.
My guess is that ZFS is going to make a lot of those things possible.
This thing does do more than
This thing does do more than backup, you can use it the same way you can use any NAS. Single disks fail, yes, but what are your chances that both your computer's hard disk AND this hard disk will fail at the same time? If you want a mirrored drive array to beck up your drive, you can buy one of those instead. And prepare to pay out the nose for it.
love the comment about Apple
love the comment about Apple TV going to rule the world. People forget the 360 has more than 10million boxes out there now pumping out movies to people. Figures apple can only dream at and will do. They need to rethink there Apple TV philosophy being that making a big whoooo harrr about fox being on board is a big thing etc. WTF It's in there interest to be onboard. Won't cost them much to be esp if it doesn't work out oppose to apple pumping out hardware. It needs to be built into TV's already. e.g. you upgrade your telly to a 1080p one and hey apple tv is included. But will never be. Sony and co. won't like that.
Agreed. XBOX, PS3 and Wii
Agreed. XBOX, PS3 and Wii are AppleTV's biggest competitors.
They've got more features, more power, more storage and are more connected.
Oh, and they play GAMES.
Apple's got to rethink this BIG TIME.
The Macbook Air really has
The Macbook Air really has no self-replecable battery? Hahahahahahhahahahaha.....wait....let me think about it.....hahahahahahah, this is a joke, right? Tell me this is a joke from Steve. No replecable battery on a laptop! This is not a freaking Ipod! You really have to bring it to an author. seller or send it in if the battery fails?
Well I guess this machine is for people who have enough money and don't care that they are being fooled. The worst flop from Apple since a long time. A Laptop with no self-replacable battery, jesus.
Check out the battery
Check out the battery technology, these aren't going to need to be replaced for a while. The only time I've ever removed the battery in my first gen PowerBook 12" was when I wanted to install the AirPort card. If it were a user replaceable battery, it would have to be bigger.
Does anyone know if the
Does anyone know if the MacBook Air has an IR sensor on it for FrontRow? It doesn't come with an Apple remote!
That's cause it's meant for
That's cause it's meant for people on the move, not for people stuck in front of a TV
Sharp Aquos is an excellent
Sharp Aquos is an excellent TV.
yeah... EXTRA :(
yeah... EXTRA :(
And why Apple stock dropped
And why Apple stock dropped 10 bucks. And also why Apple leaked the whole thing before hand.
And big Who GIves a Crap.
Apple lives by the sword and dies by it too. There buzz wasn't this time. And I'm a Mac addict so don't go there.
MB Air? Nice. But not a must have. Sell what I have and get one? Nope. This is the 2008 version of the Cube.
AppleTV? Have one. 40GB original version. Where is the plug a hard drive into AppleTV via it's USB and play my OWNED ripped movies and play? Sorry this sucks. Movie rentals. OK. Had to happen. So what.
Airport with HD? If it works (or doesn't work as Air Disk doesn't) who cares again. FIX AIR DISK APPLE! This is a straw that breaks the camel Apple. Sucker us ALL into BUYING the new Airport N with Time Machine backup via Airport and then don't implement it. ONLY so your could make us all look like chumps with this crap today.
iPhone? I own 4. NO iChat OR COPY/PASTE? Another shoe gives a crap Apple.
All in all a bust of a MacWorld. BUST. Stock dropping is the evidence from investors too.
You're losing me Apple. I will never go to Windows of course. But your shit does stink at this point.
NO 16GB or more iPhone.
NO copy/paste
NO iChat
NO all in one Inbox for email
NO multi-delete of email
This was Steve Jobs WORST MacWorld Keynote EVER.
Has more to do with the
Has more to do with the Sub-Prime lending crunch than this keynote. Look at the whole market, it was down all day too. Heck, even the dollar wasn't looking all that great today.
boo hoo. if you're that
boo hoo. if you're that upset with apple, SAVE YOUR FUCKING MONEY, OR GO BUY SOMETHING ELSE.
stop bitching, and maybe invest in some "rosetta stone" english lessons- your grammar and syntax could use some work,
I'm thinking the reason why
I'm thinking the reason why there is no 160GB option for the MBA is the space requirements. The 160GB iPod classic is a dual platter (2x80GB)
That would be why, the
That would be why, the computer would be thicker just like the 160 GB iPod Classic is thicker than the 80.
I was also hoping to hear
I was also hoping to hear about a Leopard upgrade. Also, it would have been nice to see how this new movie rental is going to be integrated into Front Row, if it is at all. I will be extremely disappointed if the online Itunes doesn't show up in FR in some fashion.
i'm waiting for the day of
i'm waiting for the day of the TRUE Apple TV...that is to say, an actual television
Imagine - a 42 TV that looks like a thinner iMac, Apple TV BUILT IN
THAT would rule the living room
9to5, do you still think
9to5, do you still think US$1799 is "extremely aggressively priced"?? I wonder if you remember saying that at all :-) $999 for 64Gb SSD really sucks! I'd better go buy one of those 32Gb Samsung drives on newegg.com for $400. No SD card slot sucks as well.
BTW, can anyone please give a photo of The Thing's power adapter?
No SD card slot? Can you
No SD card slot?
Can you tell me where there is a Mac with one?
The power adapter is the standard 45W Power adapter that the MacBook uses.
I perfectly know there's
I perfectly know there's none out there, yet I keep dreaming of :-) And probably I still miss Palm Foleo too much :-)
Standard? Oh, I thought MacBook used a 60W adapter... At least the official apple.com page says so. :-) I really expected it to become... Uh, smaller. It's not like I wanted it to be the same size as my cellphone's one, but.. . I dunno, the whole thing is MOBILE so they could at least improve the "cord management" system! :-) Remember that Samsung's first Centrino books, X10? They had a perfect "brick", yeah!
When the 60W adapters came
When the 60W adapters came out originally for the MBP it was larger, the MacBook used a smaller 45W adapter, now the 60W is the same size, the 60W can be used with both the MacBook and the Pro, but the 45W can't be used with the MBP. So the MBA could be using the 60W, since they are all the same size now. It is good to standardize on one part. The current Power Adapter Apple is using is currently one of the smaller ones out there. The Sony VAIO that Steve used as the target for this computer has a larger adapter, it also only has 1 RAM slot and only comes with 1 GB in it. The keyboard is tiny and the trackpad is a joke.
this mba is one of the worst
this mba is one of the worst (in fact, it is worst) products that apple has released. soooo disappointed, we now can only dream about the mbp update, but i feel it's not going to be earlier than in a couple of months...
Ah, you must not have been
Ah, you must not have been around during the dark ages before Steve came back.
This was like getting into
This was like getting into all of your Christmas presents before Christmas and being disappointed that there are no big surprises. Thats why this keynote was a bust. nothing we didn't already know!
MacBook Air is all style no substance IMO.
I waited until today to buy
I waited until today to buy a new MacBook, strictly because I knew they would be releasing another one. But for it to start at $1799 is kind of ridiculous. Why would I not just buy the 15 inch MBP I wanted in the first place? It's only $200 more! Well, the answer is... I will.
Also, the iPhone update has a few cool things, but still not the things everyone wants (and needs). Can I just have the ability to copy, paste, and print?!!! Really, that's all. That alone, would make me insanely happy.
Wow, people get all hot and
Wow, people get all hot and bothered by this stuff. Relax, take a deep breath, seriously.
iTunes Rentals, no surprise here, but 30+48 would have been nice. Pricing seems ok all considering.
AppleTV is now what it should have been at the start. Wonder why they didn't offer a "Buy" option in addition to the rentals.
Finally, MBA. When Steve came back to Apple, and the original Bondi iMac was released, people reacted the same way. Freakout without thinking. We all know how that story ended.
The MBA is not intended to be a replacement for either the macbook or the macbook pro. It is a new machine. If you travel, have an eye for style, and are looking for something that sets you apart. This is a great machine. I don't think many people will buy this as their only mac. It is a great companion mac tho. Yes it's expensive, but then again, you are buying a Mac, when are they ever cheap?
I'm sure there will be updates (quiet ones at that) for the MB and MBP soon, they want the focus on the Air for the moment.
I have a Quad G5 at work, a new iMac at home, and my 12" iBook G4 is due to be replaced. This is the perfect replacement.
My only gripe, and it's small, is no FW port. I'll live, but for people on vacation with one of these, trying to dump video off a camcorder into it will be a pain.
Overall I'm disappointed by
Overall I'm disappointed by the keynote.
#1 I wanted a MBP update
#2 iTunes movie rentals are too expensive and too restricited! Rentals need to be cheaper AND more convient than the existing channels. So first... without a brick and mortar store prices ought to be cheaper than Blockbuster, after all I'm paying for broadband to download it and second 24 hours after INITIATING viewing is way to short of a time period to be sure I have the time to watch it at my liesure, or that my partner or family has time to watch it as well... $2 for old movies, $3 for new releases and 3-5 days to watch them would have killed netflix and blockbuster in a couple years. This model and pricing leaves everyone else able to compete and maybe win... ie. unlimited netflix VOD.
#3 Time Capsule... Cool but I'd also like to know that I can access storage and backup on Time Capsule not just over my local network, but from ANYWHERE easly.
The MBA is great and tempting piece of hardware except personally I still need a real computer to do photo/video editing... but even then I'm disappointed with many aspects of the MBA.
#1 There appears to be no microphone input. I travel A LOT. I travel overseas A LOT, so I use a headset for skype while traveling. If you haven't done it, trust me using a headset in a public intenet cafe is the only way to do it so not microphone input for a headset is a BIG oversight.
#2 There is no better audio out put then the traditional analog stereo out. It doesn't even have an optical built into the mini-jack which would have taken up more room. Personally I'd rather have seen a HDMI plug than mini-DVI.
#3 No user replaceable HDD or Battery and soldered memory... boooo!
