More bitching: 30 inch display users assed out for 4-5 weeks on new MacBooks

Wed, 10/15/2008 - 10:12 — Seth Weintraub

Sick of our whining yet?  Too bad.  We really love the new MacBooks but we've effectively been pushed out of the market for awhile.  You see, us and every other 30 inch monitor user will have to wait at least a month to get the MiniDisplayPort Adapter for the new laptops.

Yes, we can use a MacBook, MacBook Air(yay!), or MacBook Pro now with our monster monitor...but the adapter to use it will take a month to ship....and it is $100!!....and it takes a USB port for power!...And it is huge..

I guess we'll check back in late November.

OK, back to our regularly scheduled fanboyism...

And those of us with the old Mini DVI

Apple doesn't have any adapters for their older computers to work with the new LED display. The new LED display would go really well with a 24" iMac for an extended desktop, but where's the adapter!

What are the chances Apple will be rolling the DisplayPort out to all their displays and onto the iMac, MacMini and MacPro. Another thought, is the iSight signal in the display carried on the USB cable?

And not for nothin ...but why

And not for nothin ...but why the hell is this thing a hundred bucks? So If I shell out $3400 clams for a MB and a CD I have to drop another C-note for a stupid adaptor?

does the new cinema display

does the new cinema display work with the old white macbook?

nope...

No, the white macbook uses the mini-dvi adapter. You can only use the 20" and 23" cinema display with your macbook.

I am annoyed by you morons

All mac fanboys like to do is complain, i'st too expensive, it's not compatible, it's not as good as it could have been! Seriously its annoying, you want them to do amazing new things, to do this they need to change things, but then you want them to a) make them backwards compatible with everything they've made before adding weight, using space, cost for inferior device support. b) complain that it is too expensive! We are Apple users haven't you gotten used to the premium we pay yet? Honestly it's as if you want them to buy your old computer back from you and give you new stuff at a discount. Why does it cost $100? I don't know, maybe because the costs of making 5,000 of these (mould, die, testing, certification, royalties) exceed the cost of pumping out 200,000 cheap Chinese usb cables that are not certified, tested and are massed produced. Its a basic economy of scale, they won't sell one to everyone who has bought an existing Mac book and will end up only selling half of them cause people actually upgrade to the new products WE ASK FOR! c)the delay in shipment is not to punish you, but a cause of manufacturing, if they wanted them all pushed down the pipe without adequate testing we'd end up with some being recalled for failures, then the forums would light up with complainers. This is only a problem for the MAYBE 50 people would will use these in the next 4 weeks as many people will not buy right away. If you want something cheap stick to generic displays and generic PCs as they are mass produced and are rarely tested fully, so they will likely suck (faulty soldering etc). If Apple, which is a huge corporation didn't take time to do this their products wouldn't be worth half of their cost. Chill the fuck out people!

oh the irony

I decry the fanboy's for incessant complaints and get a fanboy label.

I actually think I'd be more aptly labeled a realist. I'm inclined to accept the faults of Macs, yes there are some, and these usually are top down faults, eg. the Jobsian control of the consumer. Once we alleviate this problem it could become a good system. When will this happen? once we hit 20% market, which = never! Apple will not relinquish control and will constantly fuck the thrid party distributors and consumer with shitty schemes to increase control and revenue in the middle.

Am I a fanboy for telling you to deal with a delay in peripherals and accept that times change and you need to either buy new shit to keep up, or or or maybe you can just keep what you have and enjoy it as it is. It's annoying to hear people complain incessantly, ya I'm pissed when my machine doesn't work, the same way I'd be mad if my car doesn't work. But do you see me complaining because my Ferrari's clutch is heavier to engage than my Honda's and it makes it hard and Ferrari should fix it for free to make it easier to use? No I say, man this heavy clutch makes the car more primal and human because those new (flappy) paddle shifters take out the organic feel of the experience!

imagine you had a 30 inch

imagine you had a 30 inch display and $2K to put on a macbook air that you've been waiting 2 years for.  Then Apple pulls the no-USB/$1000/5 week wait/

call us picky!

...

You know, you could just use the display on the new laptop for five weeks. After all that is kind of the purpose of a laptop. And yes, your screen may not be 30 inches but I tend to believe you could muddle through for five weeks. I'm sure you will have some bs reason why you need a 30 inch display but the fact of the matter is that 95% of the world gets by with a normal size display. If you really wanted the new MacBook Pro NOW, you would deal.

are you new to apple?

I mean, I did the change on 2005 and as long as a couple months after I realized why all people I know say Apple is so expensive. At first I said "no way, they're not that expensive" but after having to pay for everything as separate and in Apple prices then I realized how expensive it is, though it has to be addictive since even though I opened up my eyes so early I stuck with them and have been buying and buying and buying from them as many as every six months or so...
Actually just because my online store is still having "difficulties" and THANK GOD for that cause I'd better wait for the dollar to go back to the parity we have til last week before buying since prices have gone really up, it's crazy how the new prices are in town!
But I know... first day the store gets online again I'll be buying a new macBook that I don't actually "need"
Get used guys (I know most of you are old Mac buyers so this is sarcasm somehow), we are in their arms so we have like lost our souls, our wills now we're like their zombies (pretty halloween I know)

No I'm not new, I have an

No I'm not new, I have an ibook G4, which fried its own logic board, so I bought a MBP. Do I need to buy any of those adaptors? Nope so I knew the buy in price and haven't had to replace a damn thing since, no extra luggage.

If you want more, you have to buy more! If you want a 'better' tv experience you have to buy an HDTV, and a stereo system and 8 point surround speakers, it all adds up. No one forced you to buy these, you did it of your own volition!

Stop convincing yourself that you a) need all these bells and whistles and b) that you would get them from any other manufacturer. They all want to make money

the problem this time is they

the problem this time is they took off the monitor output they used to support and used now a new one they'll be supporting
IMO they should have kept both or at least supply the adaptor for free so you'd be able to still use the display you already bought and is still as good as it was on day one
when you were talking about the cars, just let me add that when you pay a lot on those pricy cars you're not changing them that often unless you're a mobb member or a show-off new rich who NEEDS everybody to note that you have money, other than that you will use your car without any problems until you get tired of it or whatever but they are not gonna tell you that you have to buy new things in order to continue to use the same after a year and that's what happens with Macs
Of course if you wanna stay up to date always, it will cost you a nut, whatever the brand you're buying but with Apple it is always the same story, but as I said nobody forces you to buy Apple and if you keep on buying those things is because you want to... at least that's what I do, 'cause I love the look of them and also cause I really am pleased with the functionality I have received and the no-problems I've had with these... with my Dell's in the past I was always reformatting the hard-drive, figuring out what the problems were, checking this and that and like "why is it getting that slow" and all that. Thankfully those days are gone, still I can understand those who complain about this matter, cause face it: THAT PIECE OF WIRES DOESN'T COST THAT MUCH is almost an insult!
whatever... I will buy my new MacBook as soon as the store gets online again and hopefully the dollar goes down a bit. Today it went up once again :S

Why isent this one usable with the 30" screen ?

you need dual link DVI to

you need dual link DVI to drive a 30 inch screen.  This was built into the last round of G4 Powerbooks until the latest MacBook Pros.  Until this round.  Now you need the USB powered Adapter.

oh.... you didnt need it for

oh.... you didnt need it for the fucking last 20 years so you will survive fucking 5 weeks !

is it possible to have an

is it possible to have an adaptor to make the new LED cinema display work with older macs, like powerbooks and imacs?

One reason seems to be, keep

One reason seems to be, keep out all other manufacturers from the Apple-Universe.

Make a display You can connect to no other Computer then a new MacBook? Shit! Put an apple made chip inside to prevent cheap connectors/adaptors? Shit! Seen in iPod/iPhone-docks too.

The only thing You and I can do; don't by such shining f..
display.

Boykott , I will do so.

DisplayPort isn't some weird

DisplayPort isn't some weird Apple proprietary connector, Its an HD video connection standard.

Seriously.... you all bitch

Seriously.... you all bitch way too much.

DisplayPort for AppleTV would

DisplayPort for AppleTV would be sweet.

Seriously get a life! Who can

Seriously get a life! Who can a 30 inch apple monitor anyways?

Seriously get a life! Who can

Seriously get a life! Who can afford a 30 inch apple monitor anyways?

drug dealers and designers..

drug dealers and designers..

apple...

...really shit the bed on this update. all the "leaked"(gee, i wonder who in the world might be leaking those images?!) photos, build up by fanboys(i'm probably one of them), and no delivery. it's like that shitty date you held on to for the prospect of scoring. anyway, less for more... apples new motto? i'd rather save the $1000 and have a regular trackpad and screen.

I love mac computers, but I'd

I love mac computers, but I'd never buy one of their laptops. You can buy practically the same thing for about 40% less from somewhere else. In my opinion the minidisplayporawhatyamacallit is a ploy by apple to sell more of their monitors by only making their monitors compatible without an adapter.

USB

Was it posted somewhere that the USB was for Power? If so I missed it and my apologies... but could it just be to power the USB ports that are usually on the display's themselves? Again, there may be documentation that it is needed for power, but just asking...

If you can't appreciate

If you can't appreciate Apple's perspective on how a computer should look, function or be produced, go shop elsewhere*. But please... stop whining!

Apple doesn't need the lower end of the market to buy it's computers. Because those people don't even know what they are looking at, anyway.
This MacBook is about progress in display, graphics and even ethics.
No Ferrari driver would ever complain that his car can't handle speed bumps like the ol' Ford can. Because that's not what it's built for!
I'm getting a bit off topic here. Sorry!

* 4. Vista

for all the complainers. just

for all the complainers. just get a pc if apple doesn't give you what you want....

oh wait. you don't want a pc? well then, just develope your own hardware and os.

oh wait you can't?

well then you are shit out of luck. so shut up. no one is forcing these products on you. AND APPLE HAS BEEN DOING THIS FOR YEARS.

remember the no floppy drive? people like you complained their asses off, and now they look like idiots.

what no scsi? fuck no more VGA support??

apple innovates, that means it pushes the future. to do that, you have to *gasp* let go of the past.
