MacBook Pros are due for an update, we know this. If not this Tuesday, then likely at the mid-March event. By the way, if Apple releases the MacBook Pros before the event, you'll know they are mostly just a processor/keyboard/trackpad update. If Apple waits until the event, we are likely to see a full overhaul of the design. We hope we have to wait.
But those Penryn chips that are going into the MacBook Pros are also the same class of processors that Apple puts in the iMacs. Could the iMac be the benefactor of new processor (and front side bus) upgrades? We'd say it is pretty likely.
Also, why are Apple's laptops the only benefactor of the multi-touch trackpads? Can we get a multi-touch trackpad for iMacs, Minis and Pros? External, USB, and about $79? Sold!

I think we'll see a new mouse. Moving the mouse to move the cursor. For everything else there will be multi-touch. No more cleaning the mighty mouse.
Beside that I fully agree with 9to5mac on the new MBP. I can wait until mid march.

I can wait for an overhaul.... If you go to the Macrumors Buyers Guide, then you can see that the iMac had the same trend before they revamped it. It went a long time before the August Event. Maybe this means the MBP will share the same fate..

If Apple ever decides to make an iMac with a quad core 2.8 GHz or faster CPU along with a real gaming video card they will get a ton more sales. I am still using a G4 quicksilver tower with a dual 1.2 Ghz. Yes, the current iMac is much faster than my G4 but I buy my computer to last me around 5 years. The current video card in the iMac is anemic. Even with current games the iMac is pretty slow, forget about games in a year or two. I am leaning toward a Mac Pro with only one quad core and an Nvidia 8800, but will wait and see what the new iMac offers since my current monitor is only 20 inches.

The new button on the Air is SO small.... when I used it at the Apple store I almost immediately started "clicking" directly on the trackpad, which I never do on my iBook G4.
I could see a software only change to the mighty mouse which required 1 finger for a "left click" and two fingers simultaneously for a "right click", just like the track pad does now.

I remember clearly when Apple dropped the "Apple Desktop Bus" in favor of this new thing called USB. Everyone I knew had to buy converter dongles.
Also, I remember when they dropped floppies from their entire lineup within one year... me and everyone I knew had to buy external floppy drives.
When Apple decides to change a tech game, they do it with gusto. I know there would be uproar from many, but I would be happy with having an external optical drive only.

I also remember the year that Apple droped the floppy drive. The industry pundits had a field day, exclaiming that everyone would need to buy a USB floppy drive. My girlfriend was immediately sold on the external floppy, plunking down $100 for the feature. She used it zero times, as floppy drives were already long obsolete. I sold it on eBay a few years later.
I very rarely use the built-in DVD drive on my MacBook Pro. An external would be fine with me, as an internal drive has some disadvantages:
In fact, I own an external now.. a nice Sony, which I leave at home. It has a firewire & USB interface, and it cost me about $60 a few years back at an on-line retailer. I might only use it once every 3 or 4 months.
So Apple: Please drop internal optical drives. They're rarely used, and are opproaching obsolecense. They add weight, and need repair more often than any other laptop component. Some people will bitch and complain. Some people even want a BluRay drive (talk about power-hungry!) But most customers will thank you for dropping it. Just like I thank you for killing off the pointless floppy.

I disagree. There's a fundamental difference. People used floppies for installing programs, storage, and for transporting documents. Optical drives are used for those purposes, but more frequently, for playing movies and listening to music.
A laptop without an optical drive would be a deal breaker for me until the industry advances to digital downloads for movies. Apple TV's helping change that... so I agree it'll happen... but just not for at least a year or two.

I don't think they should drop optical drives in the Macbook Pros. For professionals who have to burn DVD/CD's and other things on the fly it would be a dealkiller. While a lot of people don't need it, most pros do.

You know, I honestl don't want them to ever change the overall design of the macbook pro. the thing is timeless. Sure- little upgrades herea dn there- beter displays, faster processsors, touchpad, et. But- this silver/aluminiu look is just gorgeous. Just my 2 cents.

as for the acds. Yes. they should be. I really like the cleanliness and ips panels of the displays but its such old technology that its just not worth it. im much better off going with nec2490 as a primary and a 2007wfp as a side screen.

I'm sure Wacom would love it if Apple started shipping a little multi-touch trackpad instead of a mouse with desktop computers. Why? Because then a whole crop of iMac and MacPro users would get used to trackpad computing, and therefore, more of them are likely to see a need for an actual tablet that does more than the hypothetical "standard" Apple multitouch trackpad. Then it's up to Wacom to make sure the next generation of tablets meets those needs.
I would also be happy to see a multitouch trackpad available as a mouse option for Apple desktops, because I would use it all the time and love it, but that wouldn't affect the amount of time I use my Wacom.

Completely agree, dropping an optical drive on an iMac would be a major deal breaker for me! They got to get the mouse looking cute to match the iMac. And remove that scrolly button that gets dirty, make it like the ipod classic scroll wheel!
imac Graphics card
Is there any chance they will be upgrading the current 256mb card in the imac to a 512mb card?
Everything looks great to me except the graphics card. I'm aware macs aren't really intended as gaming platforms but I do
buy games now and then.
Currently the graphics card is the only thing preventing me from switching from my current PC to an imac. I think I prefer OS X to Vista and don't really want to buy a new PC with Vista installed.
I've looked at the Mac Pro and it seems great, except for the price. The inclusion of the display in the imac makes it a great deal, I just wish it had a better graphics card.
Optical drive
If they removed the optical drive from the MacBook Pro, that would not make it "Pro" anymore! How are you going to give your huge files to someone else? Well yes you will say "well get an external drive" which is a solution but not a Pro solution, a Pro machine has to do everything you need, the MacBook Air is the machine that only does things you really need to have with you all the time!
But I do agree with the fact that the optical drive is getting really obsolete, but there is no better replacement yet! I hope that in the future, CD-s will be replaced by really small memory cards or something that would not require motors and a huge heavy reader! And you wouldn't have to switch drives every time a new Blu Ray or whatever trendy format come out, you would just buy bigger capacity cards, the prices are dropping!
As for the mouse, it would be great if it was totally non-mechanical, with a trackpad-like scrolling thing, like some mice have!
When do you think the new iMac will come out? It should be out any second now!
