NO Blu-Ray! No "new" 17" MBP! Crap-ass resolution on the 15" MBP! No Matte Screen! Hrm, what else... Oh yeah, NO 17" MBP!!!!!
"Now, I don't want to get off on a rant here, but..." - Dennis Miller

Since when has 1440x900 been "crap-ass"? And, um, I see a 17" MBP on that page....
none
i like it... i really wish it had an extra USB port or two, but that's all. and maybe an SD reader. i really don't see what all the fuss is about.
Or just pick up a Belkin Express Card SD card reader, there is one on eBay with a buy it now price of $11
an SD reader is small and cheap, as you say, and has more utility for more people than a built-in GPS unit, i would argue. is that not a fair standard? you have to draw a line somewhere. everything on the list can be added externally: a non-glossy screen, 3G wireless, a blueray drive, etc. in short, what exactly is your point?
I think the 17" and the 'smaller than 13' were not ready in time. (There seems no chance that they will continue shipping white modes for very long.) All good things come to those that wait.
but steve said that theyre "going to keep selling these for a long time" refering to the white macbooks. (And i just bought a new white macbook 1299 model like 2 months ago and its niicccceeeeee!)
the 1440x900 is pathetic for a 15.4 inch monitor--especially if this next gen of opperating systems (snow leopard) is supposed to be dpi independent. apple, why the hell are you shitting on your customers by offering sub mediocre monitors with even worse resolutions?
Mediocre? I'm writing this from a 15.4" MBP with a 1400x900 resolution, and a much higher dpi than my 19" LCD which is also 1400x900. It's plenty high resolution!
It's really not, 5 years ago I bought a dell. That Dell had a 15.4" screen at a native resolution of 1920x1280. I thought it was the most beautiful thing ever. Now I have a previous gen 17" MBP (before they started shipping the higher res option) and my only complaint is the resolution.
If Apple released an Air with a higher res screen, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I really want a smaller form factor, but I just can't even begin to work with that resolution. I multi-task and only being able to have one thing up at a time in most cases doesn't suffice for me. There's only so much you can pull off with virtual desktops/spaces too. I'll be waiting for the 17" refresh and buying one with the higher-res option at that time. As for the glare, which I'm not 100% fond of; I'm sure there are some accessory manufacturers that'll supply us with some stick on matte finishes.
I think people have become complacent on the resolution thing, (W)UXGA (I'm pretty sure that's the specification that gets you the higher res goodness). Isn't new by any means and it can't be THAT expensive to put in (I had it some 5 years ago on a ~$2k laptop). So what gives? Why did it all but disappear from most laptops and why isn't Apple, the bringer of great features, just doing it by default in the pro line?
I have previous gen 17" MBP and a hard time seeing the native screen res. I'm also 54 years old and have been programming since 1978. The problem I see is the larger, non-native resolutions are fuzzy and unacceptable. To solve this I use spaces and zoom the screen with CTRL-2 finger gesture. Once you go MAC you'll never go back.

Price is too high considering it does not have...
ExpressCard slot, no expandability it is not future proof..
eSATA
FireWire
GPS
BlueRay
Cardreader
Missing at least 1 USB
And has faulty mirror screen
Don't forget the MiniDVI port!
Oh Christ... Don't forget the floppy drive, RS422 MiniDin8 port, ADC connection, VGA connection, & DA15 connection for the most optimum amount of connectivty!
...Go buy an HP if you're that butt hurt about lack of ports. By now, I'm used to Apple taking away. They take away what the masses don't really need anymore. It's been that way since January 1999, when they took away the floppy disk drive in the Blue & White G3. May have even been earlier than that, when they started taking things away. The floppy is just the first example I can come up with where they took something away that was still widely popular and used in everyday office environments.
Back to the point, it's all about moving things forward and getting the best performance out of the core machine you buy. That's what Apple does. They're not out to screw you. Quit being so sensitive. If you don't like it, don't buy it.
I still that charging $20 for a cheap Mini to DVI dongle is ridiculous when you consider that the only monitor I know of supporting it is the new overpriced cinema displays. Paying that much for a laptop, it should come with it.
@ "Oh Christ... Don't forget"
Don't waist your breath. I agree with you 100%, but these guys don't get it.
Seriously, Apple could make a MacBook that could raise their kids, clean the house, do dishes, cost half the price it does today and they would complain that it didn't vacuum. As much as I truly love and admire the Mac community, we will never be satisfied with anything Apple does. It's never good enough fr these guys.
I would imagine that if I were an Apple engineer or designer reading this, (and I guarantee they do...) I would find this truly, truly frustrating. Sucks to know that you'll never be able to please your own community.
fwiw, i went to the apple store yesterday to check out the new laptops. I checked the heft, the keyboard, etc (didn't need to see them to know the strengths and weaknesses of the specs).
I was generally favorably impressed. But I didn't realize til i read this thread this morning that the "mirrored" display never even caught my attention. I looked at two MBs and two MBPs, in the apple store with plenty of lights that should have exaggerated the problem. To me, this experience tells me it won't be a problem for me.
Disclosure: I've been using a black MB with glossy screen for the past year-plus. I worried when i bought it; i think once, since then, my attention has been distracted by screen glare.
I went to the apple store today.. and found the opposite. The mirror displays were *completely* unusable - you could see the keyboard, yourself, people behind, etc. way more than you could actually see the display on the screen.
What's odd is they had the old style 17" mbp next to it - also glossy - and it wasn't nearly as bad. The new laptops are *way* worse than anything I've ever seen.
I left slightly annoyed at apple - it means I no longer have the choice to buy an apple laptop when this one is due for replacement, and that kinda sucks as I like OSX.
the price!!!! And I'm a Mac fanatic
you have it right !! in mexico prices got to 2,000 dls !! for the cheapest new macbook,it's such a nonsense!!!!
Yes. The price. I was ready to buy one but then I saw they are trying to pawn off the old MacBooks at the lower price point and that the student discount is now only $50 instead of $100.
If I didn't love the OS so much (and yes, the Apple-ness) that would've been enough to make me get a ThinkPad or a Viao. Instead, I'm just mulling.
My computer is a five year old iBook! This shouldn't require mulling!
I really wish Apple had introduced a $900 or so Aluminium MacBook instead of selling the old plastic model alongside the new amazing aluminium model... I don't get it!!
The prices in South Africa have gone up by 15% - thanks to recent exchage rate falls :-(
Plenty more saving to go until I get my first Mac....
Id say lack of a processor bump. But I think that is more of intels problem.
I got the MBP. I wish the keyboards keys were a bit larger. I kinda mess up sometimes when typing, but I guess im geting used to it. First time having a mac and this type of keyboard. the delete button could be a wee bit longer.
13'' low resolution screen for the price, glossy glass over the screen, the keys from the keyboard reflect on that glass when keyboard backlight is on, and horrible to use trackpad!!!!, it is the worst trackpad I have ever used!!!, try drag and drop multiple files, o try to handle knobs in virtual instruments vts, it is just too buggy!!!!, I will return it tomorrow, is a shame because the unibody is a piece of art!!!
I own the new macbook and can't be happier with it. Yes, the new trackpad takes a bit getting used to, but then so did moving from a 2 click mouse (windows) to the 1 click of apple.
Also I do not see the big thing about firewire, it is still on the MBPs and I can personally attest that me, and a good number of my friends who use macs for many years now have never had a need for it, same with the ExpressSlot.
Yes GPS would have been nice, but you can get a $30 chip that can take care of GPS if it is that big of a deal, and as far as the glossy screen goes it is not that bad, I went from a matte to glossy and the difference is negligible. Yes you can see your own reflection, but if you have the screen brightness at a decent setting there is no difference, including outside.
Overall I have no regrets about selling my older generation Macbook Pro for this new Macbook, I am glad they finally offered a smaller aluminum enclosure, and the backlit keyboard.
firewire, expresscard & bluray would have been perfect! though if there was an expresscard slot, firewire wouldn't have been a big issue ...
I wish they had updated the 17" model and the 13" cheapest models too.
I am willing to have a new 17" model MBP, but as they didn´t update it I´ll have to keep on waiting with my old PC until the update happens
So.. I wish it had bluray and at least 3 USB ports
No more white models, just :
- 13" MB Al w/o backlight and 3 USB ports : 999$
- 13" MB Al w/ backlight and 3 USB ports : 1299$
- 13" MBP Al w/ 1 fw800 and 2 USB ports : 1599$
Like that for MB :
