We've had two sources corroborate that Apple isn't putting together a home server just yet but instead is going to update Time Capsule at some point in the very near future (Macworld?). The update is relatively minor and the biggest feature is that it will allow the Time Capsule to cache software updates for all Macs on the network. This functionality exists in Leopard Server and would be nice to have in a home device - especially as updates get bigger and bigger.
Current users should be able to take advantage of this, you guessed it - with a software update.
We'd still like to see Apple move into the home server market soon and will be keeping our ears to the tracks to see if anything is materializing.

Just in time for Snow Leopard?
Unless they make you go out and buy a disc with Snow Leopard. For less money, offer a digital update to 10.6 that you can have cache on to the time capsule while you are at work and then come home and upgrade your mac quickly and easily.

I would love it if Apple added the ability for a users home directory to sit on the Time Capsule so that they can log-into their account with any authorized Mac on the network and be automatically "Time Machined".

I think it is a little
I think it is a little "risky" to joint TimeCapsule and HomeServer concepts.
Not in the technicalities, but in the plain-user head.
You remember the intro of TC: back-up for the rest of us.
Plain people think --if they use TC-- that they are protected.
"If" the TC becomes the HS... where would be the protection?
At least there should be an external disc attached,
I see it better to mix TV and HomeServer, or better, "the new" Mac mini and HomeServer.
In "plain man head" (a.k.a. user's perception), TV+HS would become the "MediaHub," with the added posibility of syncing "all the other files." TimeCapsule will continue to serve the "back-up idea."
In "geeky man head," Mac mini+HS will be the Networked Storage... plus MediaServer.
But seeing it that way, Apple won't do two products to do the same!
So, maybe, it will be a option box in a Preference panel.
What about this?????
Has anyone heard anymore about this...

Andy Ihnatko is a pretty reputable journalist, maybe we are in store for a big suprise tomorrow.
yet I still wish apple would release a home server..
Maybe besides the "revamped" TimeCapsule?
I think it is time for Apple to offer something like that. I would be the first to buy one.
