Orange France confirms 90,000 iPhone salesWed, 04/02/2008 - 10:28 — Andy Space
Orange France has revealed its iPhone sales figures for the first time, confirming over ten per cent of iPhones sold were sold unlocked, loosely in line with estimates that one-in-ten of the devices sold are then unlocked for use on other networks. Speaking to UK technology news website, Pocket-lint, Orange France confirmed that as of January 31 2008 the mobile network had sold 90,000 iPhones in total since late November last year. The report reveals that 14 per cent of iPhones sold were sold unlocked (which is a legal requirement in France, where Apple and Orange have been forced to sell an unlocked model). The remaining smartphones were sold for use on the Orange network. These reports are the first firm sales figures to emerge from a European iPhone partner, though in the UK O2 has called iPhone the "fastest-selling" device it has ever sold.

Is the unlocked version more
Is the unlocked version more expensive or something?
Anyone know if this is a
Anyone know if this is a decent sales figure or what? It seems pretty weak considering how useful the iPhone can be. Maybe the lack of 3G or the price of the contract is holding sales back. When it first came out, the people in France were saying how wonderful the iPhone was. Oh well, as long as Apple sells more than 10 million iPhone worldwide this year, I'll be pretty much satisfied.
Service costs
It isn't too weak considering the prices that Orange charges for the service.
Their "low-cost" plan works out to be more than $80 a month and gives just a few hours of time. Internet access is limited, too.
That isn't much of a deal - service is very much cheaper in the US.
All those people screaming for a "3G" iPhone forget that carriers are likely going to shoot for a minimum bill substantially higher than $100 per month.
You can kiss goodbye to AT&T's $60/month unlimited internet plan once a 3G iPhone comes around.

I'm paying 59.99 for unlimited 3G modem now. My mac uses more bandwidth on a 3G modem than my iPhone ever would. Why would the price change?
Weak...
seems pretty weak to me, considering france has 60 odd million inhabitants. phone plans are crazy, ok, but the french sure know about unlocking don't they?
Really sad for those
Really sad for those screaming for 3G phones, I wonder how fast they perceive the 3G iPhones will be to satisfy their needs and what are the sacrifices they have to make to be satisfied.
Considering the iPhone is
Considering the iPhone is sold €400 ($627)it's not a bad figure...
In Germany, they sold only half as much, but a bit more in the UK.
