quite poor actually, they hardly do anything themselves, not much better then those chinese copy-cats!
How can Palm expect to differentiate themselves from Apple if they:
1) hack the Pre to use iTunes as a conduit for music
2) borrow touch-screen gestures from the iPhone's UI
3) make the Pre's packaging identical to the iPhone's
4) have former Apple employee's and exec's running the company?
Granted, the Pre's own UI is very different from Apple's, so they have that going for them. But nonetheless, I would think that they'd want to distance themselves from Apple as much as possible to break their own ground and leave their own mark.
Just my 2 Cents.
Because they have real OS that was made from scratch to multi-task.
They don't need to differentiate themselves from the iPhone OS. The press has already done that for them and told Apple 3.0 better do better than copy and paste, charge users in applications (yeah we all want that.
True synergy (their word) across all accounts in a hand held device. Engadget put it best by saying you aren't holding a phone. You are holding a computer & the future.
This isn't revolutionary, it's evolutionary as the iPhone used to be.
You are now the RAZR of 2009 putting out cheap phones (so sad to see Apple go from what worked for them for a buck and a cheap watered down gadget).
what a bunch of mumbo jumbo!!! gobbledy-gook galore!!!! what do you know about the pre other than engadget's opinions? have your sticky little fingers touched one? honestly, the crap one can read on this site amazes me!!!
Well, your comments are that, worth only two cents. Come on, so they have a touch screen. Does Apple have an OS that allows a person to multi task??? Creative has been able to sync with iTunes for years. You are nitpicking this one to death. Having competition is a good thing. They are both good devices. The Pre fits the nitch between the BlackBerry and the iPhone.
When your not the lead dog, the view never changes! Enjoy the view Palm, Microsoft, RIM, etc...
RIM is the lead dog.
Sometimes, imitation works quite well. For example, if you want to compete with Starbucks, you should put a coffee shop right next to their most popular one and put up a similar looking sign. It's marketing 102.
What do you expect ? Its a box with a picture of the product on it.
Doesnt look much like an iphone box other than its white and has a picture on it. Apples box is 2 5 sided boxes that slide over each other to create a package.
Palms box looks like its a rip open at one end and dump the contents out.
Apple put a lot into the 'experience' of a new product which includes the packaging and even the openig of the packaging.
Right! Just a white box (so typical for Palm, right?), with just the product on it with no name of the company (so typical for Palm, right?), with the same proportions as the iPhone box and the logo on the bottom of the box like Apple.
Probably the only reason it opens differently is because it's cheaper. Nobody says they can't copy Apple (and they have even beaten Microsoft lately) but at least admit it because it's more than obvious! As soon as I saw the picture I was already smiling without even reading the headlines.
You need to get a life if opening a box with an Apple on it is an "Experience" for you.
It's a fricking box with a picture. I threw both my original iPhone box and 3G box away after my "experience".
The same way I plan on throwing the Pre Box away.
IT'S WHAT'S INSIDE THE BOX THAT MATTERS AND APPLE DON'T GET IT ANYMORE. PICK YOUR NEXT iPHONE UP AT WALMART OR 7-11.
Now that's an experience. Way to go Apple! FTL
Everytime I see the Pre I can practically feel the cheap plastic and that keyboard is really cool late 90's tech.....
Palm believes the best way they have to move any Pre's off the shelves is to try to deceive some customers into buying them instead of iPhones? Man this is lame.
HILARIOUS STEVE JOBS BLOG POST!!!!
http://scottstipoftheday.blogspot.com/2009/06/steve-jobs.html
Guys, is there such a thing as a patent for a white box. I love Apple but we don't rule the world....not yet anyway :-)
Relax, its just a box, its the contents that REALLY matter, and we are all OK with that...we are years ahead and always will be.
Its just a stupid box..... stupid article
Yeah, cause I've never seen a white box with a picture of the product on the front before.
Oh wait, just remembered the packaging of my nokia.
Oh, and the 3 or 4 phones before that.
my iPhone came in a back box...
my iphone came in black box...
This form factor is pretty good, I think other mobile phone makers should just copy Apple. I am sick of those oversized Nokia boxes ...
Te Sales, Palm. You should be ashamed.
Mrs. Henderson! Palm's copying!
While I don't think any/many Apple fans think that Apple should sue Palm over things like this I think we have a right to point it out and say how lame we think it is.
Palm is ripping off Apple's look/feel/design more than even the lowest Chinese copycats or Microsoft even are able to or willing to.
I don't see how Palm can position themselves as anything other than below Apple if all they aspire to is copycat'ing them 100%.
Even their launch even was nothing more than Apple-lite.
I think we can all have a hearty laugh when the Palmboys start saying how much more awesome Palm and the Pre are than Apple and the iPhone.
Apple puts so much time into designing their packaging. A high school teacher I know won an award and met the guys who design the boxes. They actually make it so it takes a certain amount of time to open the box, (the suction effect) so that the suspense builds! hahaha Apple's profit margin on their products (all of which I love) has to be unbelievable to hire packaging engineers that put that much time in
It's a box, open it throw it in reclycle and enjoy the product.
If it's more than that to you then get a fricking life.
Pathetic that this much hype from FanBoys can be made for a fricking box.
Lawsuit over a Box? That will make Apple look even more pathetic than they are for giving copy and paste 2 years fricking late.
Seriously everyone follows Apple by putting a picture of their product on the box... Amazing who does that?
but if you have ever seen previous palm treo boxes/ packaging then you will know that they looked like this as well.
.....move along people nothing to see here
OK its just a box and a cheap phone inside. I could care less of its pathetic marketing campaigns. Apple doesn't have nothing to worry about. It may just get music from iTunes but no TV Shows, Movies or Apps. Then the user experience. I had a iPhone for 2 years and yeah I sold mine last week anticipating on the New iPhone with 32GB. I'm bored and reckless. Meaning because I've got use to something that works for me such as web surfing, email, and photography to say the least. People experiences is what make them comfortable with their iPhones. These people never had a iPhone how they with Sprint. If they had a iPhone I'm sure they still will be with AT&T waiting on the Next iPhone like I'm doing right now. I'm beginning to say this a lot lately. Everything is not for everybody. Yeah I really feel its a waste of time watching what Palm, Google or any other Cell Phone companies are going to do next. Because to me no matter how hard they try they not going to beat iTunes or the App Store. Why? I spent probably $7,500 last year on Music, Movies, TV Shows and Apps. Anyone with God given commonsense will not spend all that money and buy a device that can't utilize it and sync just the music isn't acceptable either. Apple excels at making software and the hardware that run it on. MobileMe has been a real investment because when I get my iPhone all I have to do is sync my account and all contacts, email and calendars will be Push instantly on my iPhone. Plus I restore from Backup. I'm use to this I'm comfortable and yes I'm enjoying this. Apple basically bought Mac OS X Leopard to a handheld size. This is why Apple won't fail us. So I said what I wanted to say so there won't be no misunderstandings later. There truly is no competition for Apple.
I think the Pre packaging has more in common with the older iPod packaging than the iPhone.
