RealPlayer SP beta for Mac exports media to iPod, iPhone, Apple TV
RealNetworks climbs back onto the agenda today, announcing the release of a beta of RealPlayer SP for the Mac, the latest version of the company’s multimedia playback solution.
RealPlayer SP clearly wants to live at the side of the dominant iTunes ecosystem. While RealPlayer 11 let users download videos, including those from YouTube, to the computer; this version lets you convert those clips into a format that’s suitable for playback on the iPod, iPhone, Apple TV and many other smartphones and media playback devices.
The software will encode assets into a range of formats, including H.264, 3GP, MP3, and AAC.
The RealPlayer Converter includes presets for a slew of devices. When converting for Apple hardware, it pops the conversions inside your iTunes library once conversion is complete.
A range of social networking features are also in the mix - dedicated buttons let you share video links to the likes of Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.
"RealPlayer SP is the simplest way to take your favorite videos with you on your phone, iPod or other portable device," said Jeff Chasen, vice president of Video Product Development at RealNetworks. "We are developing tools that make it easy for people to enjoy and share their favorite videos wherever and whenever they are."
RealPlayer SP for PC has already been used to download over 100 million videos since its beta launch last year. RealPlayer SP for Mac is available as a free download (though we're having the customary challenges locating it on Real's site).

Interesting. Have to test it out first. Maybe the one converter I am force to get, since it seems no one can do RMVB conversion well.
What's YouTunes?
I will never, ever, ever, ever install any software from Real. They are a horrible, terrible company that pushes malware. I would rather stop using computers altogether than use anything from Real.
It tried to covert an RM audio file to MP3 .. did not work ! any thoughts ?
If it can convert .rm to H.264, I will get it as I have quite a few .rm files that I'd like to able to view on my iPhone (the old Russel Peters Comedy Now! skit being my favorite - can't find that in non-rm version anywhere).
They need to drop the name before anyone will take them seriously again. They might think they are "hanging onto the brand," but everyone I know only thinks bad things when they hear that name. "RealNetworks" is synonymous with "real sh*t" for most people.
They are better than they used to be, basically the Mac version was an after thought. Developers are going to have to learn that if they treat Mac users as less important, when they realise the potential and want to give Mac users love, we wont buy it. I only install apps that I really need, and I review that regularly, you're going to have to work very hard for me to want to keep your app on my machine. OS X pretty much ships with everything i need!
Is RealPlayer still going!? Just seeing that name sends shivers down my spine.
I thought RealNetworks assumed room temperature a long time ago. Guess I was wrong!
The old internet era, reminds my of my old PC days, Real Player, MusicMatch, Winamp, and on bad days Windows Media Player. I don't miss the conflicts those programs caused, or the lack of useful features that made listing to music on your computer normal.
Unfortunately it doesn't support exporting RMVB to anything.
