Apple to promote Mac Apps for education and enterprise with new volume purchase program

Apple's current iOS-exclusive program

Apple’s current iOS-exclusive program

Apple has informed Mac developers that it is preparing to launch the ability for educational institutions and developers to purchase apps from the Mac App Store in volume for a discount. The upcoming feature was announced in an email:

We’re pleased to announce that Mac apps will soon be eligible to participate in the Volume Purchase Program for Business and Education. The Volume Purchase Program allows businesses or educational institutions to purchase multiple copies of your app at once.

You may also offer a discount to educational institutions for multiple purchases. If you choose to offer a volume discount for an app, institutions that purchase 20 or more copies of that app in a single order will receive a 50-percent discount.

Your existing Mac apps will not be automatically enrolled in the discount for educational institutions. If you would like to offer your existing Mac apps at a discount for the Educational Volume Purchase Program, check “Discount for Educational Institutions” in the Rights and Pricing section of the Manage Your Apps module on iTunes Connect.

For orders of 20 copies, a discount of 50% to the total order will be applied. This option will not be enabled for developers automatically, but the app sellers will need to enable the feature in iTunes Connect.

Apple launched volume purchase functionality for iOS applications in 2011.

1Password 4 for iOS goes on sale ahead of Dropbox API changes

AgileBits, the development team behind 1Password for iOS and Mac, announced today that due to an upcoming change in Dropbox’s API, Dropbox syncing in version 3 of the 1Password iOS client will no longer work as of September 1st. Because the old version of 1Password has been discontinued, it will not be updated to work with the new Dropbox API.

Instead, AgileBits is offering the new and improved 1Password 4 at $7.99 the lowest price to date. The sale will last until Friday, August 16th. Since 1Password 4 requires iOS 6, some customers may not be able to update to the latest version. If that’s the case, those users will be glad to know that 1Password 3 will still support Wi-Fi syncing with computers on the same network.

AgileBits has also published a new FAQ document to explain the changes and possible solutions.

Apple now selling refurbished 7th gen iPod nano, drops prices on refurbed iPads

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 12.18.01 PM

From 9to5Toys.com:

After it started offering a selection of refurbished 5th generation iPod touch through the Apple online store earlier this month, Apple today began selling the refurbished 16GB, 7th generation iPod nano in various colors for $129. That’s $20 or 13% off retail, but we’ve seen these refurbished units go for as low as $119 on 9to5Toys.

Apple today also began selling the refurbished iPad 2 and iPad 3 at even lower prices than before with the 16GB iPad 2 with WiFi + 3G now starting at $349 (roughly $180 off retail). Apple has also further discounted its refurbished iPad 3 with WiFi and cellular to a starting price of $409 ($170 off retail). That provides consumers with an additional $50 off its old refurbished prices and matches the best price we’ve seen on 9to5Toys.

Apple’s 27-inch iMacs hit the refurb store but you can often get a new one for less

Refurb-iMac-27-inch

From 9to5toys.com  (Twitter, Feed, Facebook), today:

Apple today started offering a couple new models of its latest generation iMac through its refurbished online store. Previously Apple was offering refurbished units of the new 21.5-inch iMac only, but we hadn’t seen any 27-inch models hit yet, which we assumed was likely due to yield issues and significant delays experienced in the iMac’s first few months of launch. Today Apple has finally started offering both the entry level 27-inch iMac and the higher end iMac, in addition to a couple of BTO models. However, taking tax into account, you might be about to score a new one for around the same price…

You might not be able to entirely beat Apple’s refurbished price, but taking the tax into account, you can almost get a brand new 27-inch iMac for the same price. 9to5Toys breaks it down.

For instance, the high end 3.2GHz model is currently available for $100 off on Amazon for $1,899. If you’re paying 8% tax on the refurb unit, that brings your total up to $1834.92. In many cases, buying new for around the same price or slightly more might be worth your while.

Best Buy puts iPad 3 on clearance for as low as $314 as Walmart offers 16GB iPad mini for $299

From 9to5Toys.com:

Best-Buy-iPad-3-clearance

Best Buy started offering some nice deals on the previous generation iPad 3 with Retina display today with most models available for up to 30 percent off normal retail prices. One of the most enticing deals will let online shoppers get their hands on a 16GB Wi-Fi only model for just $314. A 32GB Wi-Fi only model is available for as low as $384 ($165 off retail).

The retailer is offering deals on other iPad 3 models as well, such as the 16GB iPad 3 with Wi-Fi + Cellular on AT&T for $405.99.

You can check out all Best Buy’s iPad 3 deals here.

Walmart also has an attractive iPad deal today, offering the 16GB Wi-Fi iPad mini for $299. That’s $30 off retail and around the same amount refurbished models are going for. You can reserve online but will have to pick up in-store. This is definitely the best deal you’ll find for the entry level iPad mini:

Update: Walmart’s iPad mini deal is now available for shipping.

Apple now offering EPP employee discounts for new iMacs, signaling supply constraints are over

https://twitter.com/dmaul53854/status/312270255152046080

Apple today introduced discounts for its new iMac lineup for its Employees Purchase Program, signaling it could be further caught up with demand and moving past the significant constraints it experienced in the months following launch. On top of 25 percent off, which brings the top of the line iMac model down from $1,999 to $1,599, Apple’s employees get $500 toward Macs every three years.

Up until today, Apple wasn’t offering EPP discounts on the new iMac lineup (something it has done for new backordered products before), but this could be because the product has experienced significant constraints in the last few months of production.

Earlier this month shipping times finally improved for iMacs in at least the United States and Canada with estimates now quoted as “within 24 hours.”

Last week, Apple also announced a new 21.5-inch iMac variant that brings a lower $1,099 entry price for education customers and offers slightly downgraded specs with a 3.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i3 CPU, 4GB of RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000, and a 500GB hard drive.

Apple advertises Boxing Week iTunes sale in Canada, 69-cent songs and albums from $5.99

Site default logo image

Apple does not often have or advertise sales on Boxing Day, a holiday recognized in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. On the holiday, retailers discount products similar to Black Friday in the United States. However, this year, Canadians are getting a Boxing Week sale on iTunes.

As of right now, Apple is running a promotion in at least the Canadian iTunes store with a selection of 69-cent songs and albums from $5.99, including: Mylo Xyloto by Coldplay, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites by Skrillex, Foo Fighters’ Wasting Light, and Take Care (Deluxe Version) by Drake.  Each album is selling between $5.99 and $7.99. Altogether, there are 30 or more albums offered.

There is also a selection of 69-cent song collections consisting of the top-selling songs from 2011, best songs of 2011, classic hits, and more.

It is unclear whether Apple will have a Boxing Day or Week sale in its Canadian, U.K., or Australian online and retail stores. Canadian retailers typically run Boxing Week sales from Dec. 24 through Jan. 2, but Boxing Day is traditionally recognized on Dec. 26. It appears the iTunes sale has not popped up in the U.K. or Australian stores, but let us know in the comments if it does.

Refurbished iPad 2’s now available in Apple’s Online Store

Site default logo image

It looks like Apple has just started offering refurbished iPad 2s via the Apple online store, as noted by Dealnews and MacRumors. We aren’t going to jump to any upcoming iPad 3 conclusions just yet, but the discount is definitely a welcomed entry price point for new iPad owners in the midst of tablet makers looking to go after the low-end tablet market.

The only iPad 2s currently available include the 32GB and 64GB Wi-Fi+3G models going for $679 and $779, and the 64GB Wi-Fi only model going for $649. It looks like both black and white models are currently available as well as all four carrier options for the 3G models. If you can get your hands on one before they’re gone, it’s listed as shipping in 1-3 business days.
