Germany offers one Euro iPhone 3G

Apple's German iPhone network operator, T-Mobile, is fielding one of the most aggressive discounts yet announced on the iPhone 3G - offering it for just one Euro on its more expensive tariffs.

This massive discount is bound to generate significant sales of the next-generation iPhone when it goes on sale on July 11, in a defiant response to claims iPhone sales there didn't meet expectations.

Deutsche Telekom CEO Rene Obermann last month confirmed that 100,000 iPhones have been sold in Germany since its launch last November, saying it has become the most popular multimedia device the company sells.

Now, customers agreeing to a new two-year contract with their 8GB iPhone 3G will be entitled to the discount cost, on a monthly contract of €69. This model will cost €169.95 on the entry-level €29 tariff. A discount also on the 16GB version, whcih will cost from €19.95 euros with an all-inclusive data plan costing €89 euros per month, rising to €249.95 for customers choosing the lowest-priced, €29/month tariff.

T-Mobile parent company, Deutsche Telekom, says the move is designed to boost take-up and use of its 3G services, offering data transmission speeds of 3.2mbps. iPhone users consume 30 times as much data as users of other Internet-enabled phones.

...most aggressive discounts... I dont think so

Well, it might be true that the Telekom Germany is offering the best discount, but on the other hand, the tariff options are more expensive then the others. Even Telekom Austria offers better packages, then the German Headquarter. Thanks to competition.

The cheapest tariff sums up in 24 month to 890,95 Euros, including the 8gig iphone.

in UK : 790 € -> 18 month
in Austria : 995 €

Now, you may say "That ain't bad",.. but the cheapest tariff does not even have a data flatrate (only 500mb/ 100mb after 1st of September) and just 50 minutes including.

And even on the next best tariff (1260,95 € for 24 month + phone) you get a data flatrate that will be throttled down after 300 mb !!!!

300mb? Ouch that's poor. I

300mb? Ouch that's poor.

I guess the tariffs reflect the market... maybe they don't use much data in germany?

Also 249.95 Euros on the

Also 249.95 Euros on the cheapest tariff is $380. So much for $199 is the most you'll pay anywhere...

169.95 euros?? What ever

169.95 euros?? What ever happened to Steve's word "it will cost maximum $199 in all these countries" (refering to the 70 countries the iphone will be sold)?.
Today's change for $199 is 128.7 euro, not 169.95

Still carrier bound?

Yeah, alright. They could offer to pay me monthly damages and I still will not sign a contract with a Deutsche Telekom sub.
Won't they open up already and let existing partners distribute worldwide?
That'll be the day...

FAIR use?

I'd be signed the moment they'll stop this "fair" use thing! 300mb? 100mb? (with the 49€ plan) that is no flatrate! you will be throttled down to a poor 64kbit/s downstream when you have exeeded that limit... without the iphone t-mobile (as well as the other provider with a good 3G network vodafone) is selling their UMTS (3G) flatrate with a 10GB limt (for about 40€) that would be FAIR use...

on the prices however i think they are ok. the dollar is very weak these days but that shouldn't trick you into thinking that because for you (as you get paid in dollar) €169 would be quite much ($260) it also is to us (because we get paid in that same strong euro we'll pay the iphone with). so €199 is about as much for us as $199 (and €169 quite cheap) if you get what i mean.
