ThinkSecret is officially dead

Thinksecret is officially dead as of this morning.  The webpage currently lists a 403 Forbidden error.  Although they had been publishing only news clippings for the past 6 months and announced their closure in December, it is still a major loss for the Macintosh community.  Not much else to say really.

It's actually about time. It was really annoying that Nick kept publishing after he announced he was leaving TS and moving on.

He had advertising

He had advertising agreements to complete.

You know whats annoying

You know whats annoying "Anonymous Coward #1", that fact of having people like you complaining.  Let people decide what the f*** they want to do.  Nick and Ryan dedicated plenty of time on TS, bringing in fantasic news, reviews and made most of their readers quite happy to be a part of it.  So having to part ways wasn't going to be an easy task.  I'd like to see you do the same thing and then get shot down by a bunch of suits.  So if you can, kindly, give some respect to the team.

Bummer. First ThinkSecret,

Bummer. First ThinkSecret, then CARS...... who's next?

Maybe Malcor has finally gotten through...  :O

That was definitely not a

That was definitely not a good move from Apple.

Just imagine ALL rumours sites would quit publishing rumours 2 weeks prior to a Macworld.
I think Apple get's enough advertisement through rumours that it should have acknowledged those sites. There's a german saying don't bite the hand that feeds you. And that also applies to a bigdog like Apple.

The site blew anyway.

46

The site blew anyway. Sorry, but it did. Chunks. There are plenty of other sites out there and actually I don't miss TS at all. In fact I had completely forgotten about them and probably would have gone the rest of my life without recalling the site even once had I not read this headline. Things come to life. Things die. Things come to life. I and the rest of the world, I imagine, are unfazed.

Wow. Getting rather

Wow. Getting rather "philosophical" about a website there, buddy.  "Things come to life, things die."  How insightful!  You're a real Aristotle.

We will miss them. R.I.P.

Everyone has had 6 months to get over it. When he announced it was over I deleted the bookmark from my browser.

What would he have done, predicted the MacBook Air a month before anyone else? The world hasn't come to an end, people.

Think Secret wasn't really a

93

Think Secret wasn't really a great site.  It did get some great rumors right, but in general, the information flowing out of TS was limited.  TS seemed to focus only on rumors and "secrets", and not on other important news information.

For that reason, I rarely went to Think Secret.  It had "quality news" once every 6 months or so, but most of the time it had nothing to say.

The other Mac rumor sites can easily fill the void that TS leaves behind.

Frankly, I can't say in the

36

Frankly, I can't say in the years of reading various Apple fansites that TS really played any part in what I read. Fansites are a 'dime a dozen' and rumor sites (looking at how much of a hit the stock took a hit after MW) in many ways are detrimental to Apple. Soliciting people who have an NDA is probably not a great leg to stand on :)

Now if we could only kill

Now if we could only kill off MacOSRumors....

it's gone. and in a year or

it's gone. and in a year or less people will say...
"Think Secret? Wha'zat??"

in the long run it'll have no effect, no lasting impact. so...
Ciao, baby.

I'm sad about site closures

35

I'm sad about site closures like this. It's not necc about news correct or not...but about the community sites like TS create. The joy and anticipation of checking sites like this to hear an additional angle to news, discussions, etc...is a great past time I have.

Sure, rumors are idle chatter that sometimes is true. But I think the surprise and looking forward to the next big thing Apple does is something we all enjoy and to some degree benefit from whether we buy and use the products or not.

Apple carves out a corner in our economy, businesses, consumerism, and most of all, the culture of design and user experience; especially those leaps in innovation. Sites like TS provide a conduit by which we all participate and tap the broadband of conversations that make up this community. They create places where we can have conversations like this. Without them, our thoughts, hopes, and critique (of one another even!) are disparate, placeless, and lost. We should embrace and support sites, the people behind them, and together celebrate these great technological advancements that we will someday look back to at the Smithsonian's museums and tell our grandchildren that we were there when it happened.

people have short

people have short memories.  it's true that TS wasn't great lately, but the lawsuit--which dragged on forever--had a lot to do with that.  there was a time when it was better.

Hello IMPO Thinksecret was

73

Hello

IMPO Thinksecret was the only source of real and dedicated insider information, and trusted them highly for future releases and rumors, the site going offline reflects the fact that this information was indeed harming Apple. Good examples of small tips like "there won't be any hardware announcement the following 3 months" is the kind of information I'm looking for. They wrote clear and small articles with information of what Apple was planning for the future

Information easy to deduce like there will be a MBP revision, that future revisions of the iPhone will be 3G compatible, Firmware 1.1.4 or what about 1.2? is just crap and doesn't feet to a real Apple rumor site.

What now to days is regarded as alive rumor sites are IMPO lame, provide mostly news and even information about other stuff (Toshiba, China, Google), the pink iPod was a surprise no one expected, memory increase on IPhone and iPod touch arrived unexpected and no one had an idea of Time Capsule, the Mac mini is still alive, still no signs of the yellow iPod and just one ignited the rumor about the real name of the MBA or pictures of the iPod nano 3G software and hardware.

TS forums were also good and seemed to be visited by some people that used their logic, knew to write, and understood Apple as a company and it's way of thinking. It was cool to read them every day.
