V1.1.1 day

Got to give Erica props.

Got to give Erica props. Until now TUAW would have posts like "we hate that yukky terminal App thingy". Good for them for going l33t

It's fake. Look an the

It's fake. Look an the iTunes Store icon. On the 1.1.1 Firmware the iTunes store only says iTunes under the settings icon. On this claimed to be 1.1.1 firmware it may have the same icon as iTunes but is listed as "Mobi...tore". Believe me the method does somewhat work but not completely. The phone you see in the above picture is 1.0.2 firmware.

I also believe that the

I also believe that the calculator icon is a dead giveaway that this image is a fake.

Um, ^^^, if you read the

Um, ^^^, if you read the posts, you would realize this is 1.02 firmware where they copied the iTunes Music Store (aka Mobile Music Store) from the 1.1.1 firmware onto a phone with 1.02. It does not work, but they are not claiming the picture is 1.1.1

True the calculator icon in

True the calculator icon in addition to the iTunes icon name and location proves it's a fake and old firmware.

Alright, so if we can crack

Alright, so if we can crack the iPhone, the Touch is easy from then on, right?

No, they used some tricks in

No, they used some tricks in 1.0.2 (which has NEVER EXISTED for the iTouch) and upgraded (NOT RESTORED) to 1.1.1, and the tricks stayed. There is no way to do this on the touch, no matter how many people in the TUAW comments ask and no matter how many times they are told no.

There is no way to do this

There is no way to do this on the Touch, true. But I highly doubt that, once they've jailbroken 1.1.1, this is the method that most end-users will be doing. What this method has done is allow the devs enough access to the filesystem of 1.1.1 that, hopefully, they'll be able to figure out a direct jailbreak for 1.1.1, without any need for 1.0.2 -- after all, people buying iPhones pre-loaded with 1.1.1 need to hack, too.
If it works out that way, the Touch very well may be hackable, depending on how similar it's firmware turns out to be.

I'm really surprised that it

I'm really surprised that it has taken this long to unlock the 1.1.1 firmware.
Wouldn't you be able to capture the memory buffers during the update to 1.1.1 and find out the Key to unlock the file system?
Also couldn't you use a USB sniffer to peek at the communication between the iPhone and iTunes.

The way i heard it works is

The way i heard it works is the transfer uses ssh to encrypt the data. Once its on the phone its decrypted and installed.

I think they learned a little bit from sniffing the traffic, but not enough for an unlock

9to5 (the unknown

9to5 (the unknown up-and-comer) got a scoop on the new nano design, and people have been treating them like insider info gods ever since.

Perhaps making such a bold proclamation based on a known-to-be-misleading image will help dissipate 9to5's reputation distortion field.

thanks for trolling our comments! That takes devotion

Hey, I'm not the one proudly

Hey, I'm not the one proudly proclaiming it "V1.1.1 Day" alongside an unlabeled image of a 1.0.2 iPhone. What's worse: posting a falsely-suggestive and irresponsible report, or calling you on it?

(it's not trolling if you haven't even bothered to print a retraction or explanation)
