Safari 3.1 will be FAST!

Sat, 02/09/2008 - 05:59 — Seth Weintraub

I just spent a few hours running tests on the latest version of WebKit for Computerworld.

Conclusion?

The upcoming builds of WebKit/Safari are really realy fast.  The unoptimized WebKit is often twice as fast as the current standard Safari in page load times.  And Safari is supposed to be the fastest desktop browser out there!?

According to the WebKit surfin' Safari blog, the speed increases are largely due to Javascript handling improvements.

Whenever the new WebKit code gets pushed into Safari (soon?), you'll notice these significant speed increases and possibly even more after the code is optimized.  Download the latest WebKit here, compiled for both Mac and even PC to get a preview or check the article for more results.

Oh and Firefox users (like myself) should also see similar speed  improvements in coming versions.

Thank goodness because words

Thank goodness because words cannot describe how much a** my Safari sucks right now. It cannot even load multiple tabs. Garrrr.

Now, I'm switched to Camino. Safari is going to have to rub my back and bring me dinner for a few weeks before I will consider coming home.

This is not normal.

This is not normal.

Safari is fast already. Even

Safari is fast already. Even though I'm only on a 1.33 GHz iBook and have LOTS of windows and tabs open. Something like:
-> There are 4 windows open in Safari, with a total of 22 tabs. You have entered text on “Safari 3.1 will be fast FAST! | 9 to 5 Mac”. If you quit Safari, your changes will be lost. Do you want to quit anyway?<-

Maybe the memory usage gets improved a bit.

To the earlier poster who

To the earlier poster who claims that they "can not even load multiple tabs." What the heck is wrong with your computer? I have an old 733MHz tower that responds perfectly with Safari and multiple tabs. No problem. I also have a new MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz and Safari is also BY FAR the best browser I use.

I seriously doubt you are really on a MAC using safari. If you are legitimate, then your computer is having problems, not Safari. Camino is also a great browser which I use from time to time. Firefox is SLOW compared to Safari.

In the end, I really don't think Safari cares if you use it or not so your back scratch and dinner will never arrive. Enjoy your life!

I have found that

I have found that periodically clearing Safari's cache does wonders for improving performance (and preventing the dreaded spinning beach-ball cursor).

Just choose "Empty Cache..." from the Safari menu.

Is Safari for iphone and ipod touch being updated to 3.1?

Safari totally bites on my computer. It constantly fails to load pages that Firefox handles just fine, fails to process web forms, and other various and sundry bugginess. I'm surprised it works OK for other people. I sincerely hope the next version works!!!

This is kinda stating the

This is kinda stating the obvious, but it might have been overlooked. You have to turn tabs on in Safari before it will use them. They're off by default.

Major Safari Issues 1)

Major Safari Issues

1) Safari either has huge memory leaks or is not programmed to release memory. A major problem that means I MUST quit safari periodically.

2) Safari's (webkit) javascript engine is not standards compliant. It makes it fast but breaking the rules means developers must program defensively to work around the issue. Much like IE6 with css!

It is still my favorite browser because of the Cocoa emacs keybindings!

I always have to chuckle

I always have to chuckle when I read posts claiming speed or rendering problems with Safari. Can't these people get a clue and find out how to properly maintain their systems? Camino, Firefox faster than Safari? Ridiculous! Anyone who actually knows how to use a Mac knows that Safari is by far the fastest browser for the platform. Good grief the difference is in-your-face.

Safari renders pages much better these days. I have absolutely no problems with any of my banking, credit card, financial, or other commercial web sites. Oh sure, there's still the occasional screwball, Windows only web site whose developers still live in the 90's and use Front Page to build their sites. The important, useful sites all support Safari now, or at least use standard web compliant code.

Lawrence, not everyone uses

Lawrence, not everyone uses Safari on a Mac and the code for the PC was not as fast as FF. Worse, pages did not render well. In contrast, the latest builds for Safari are really nice.

(Except the CAPTCHA on this page is pushed off to the side)

I use Camino and Safari,

I use Camino and Safari, each about 50%.   And my deparment runs a mission-critical web-based "Intranet" service for a large organization that you've most certainly heard of.

First, Safari is certainly faster than Camino in most cases - but not always.   Their reliability is comperable.

In terms of standards compliance, they're both excellent - and way, way better than IE6.

Frankly I hope the Mobile OS

Frankly I hope the Mobile OS port is in the works and removes some of the limitations the current Mobile Safari suffers.   Of course some of those limitations are design decisions so I'm looking at this update as a method for them to back pedal on these.

So what am I talking about?   Well let me tell you the thing that I'd like to see Mobile Safari do is to access the local store on the iPhone/Touch.    That is to be able to browse and view HTML and PDF files that are store in Flash on these devices.    This woould really expand the capabilities of these devices as tablet devices.

Well that and plugins in general.   Then again maybe not, I'd be satisfied with Flash support of some sort.

By the way I know about hacks to install a local web server but frankly I'm not really interested.    All I want to be able to do is to download documentation, save it and reference such when away from net connections.

I've not run into any speed

I've not run into any speed problems with Safari but often run into web site problems (Javascript suspected) e.g. where hitting a button does nothing.

Firefox is great because it

Firefox is great because it customizable. Also some Google apps work better in Firefox than Safari too. Most of the time I'm surfing on Safari. It's much faster than Firefox. Some sites are still kind of wonky in Safari, still I love the speed at which Safari runs and use it most of the time. I'm happy to hear it'll become even faster.

Safari 3.0 on a ppc WAS a

Safari 3.0 on a ppc WAS a memory hog, Ive seen it consuming 300MB+ for a couple of web pages, and frequently crashed. 2 never had those problems. Also, the latest version of Flash has a serious bug in it that could down 3.0 with regularity. I hope 3.1 will be better. I've also seen PhilipM's "button failure" on several occasions.

Sure, it renders reasonably accurately, but thats not much good when you've got the spinning beachball of death again.

I am trying to get safari to

I am trying to get safari to load multiple pages on startup. Firefox uses the "|" separator. How do I set up Safari to load Multiple pages?

Thanks
