New smaller Apple wireless keyboard and rectangular mouse hit the FCC

Engadget's got the quickly-removed-from-the-FCC new mouse and keyboard that Apple plans on rolling out in the next few weeks.  Interestingly, the keyboard is smaller (that old wireless keyboard was way too big!) and the mouse is more rectangular that the current Mighty Mouse.

How long do we have to wait, Apple?  How long?

 Engadget notes:

A new Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse have arrived at the FCC, and they've got new model numbers of A1314 and A1296 -- the current wireless keyboard is A1255 and the Mighty Mouse is A1197. That's pretty much all we know for now, but these keyboard dimensions are also smaller than the current model, which rules out a return of the numeric keypad -- sorry to dash your hopes, Excel jockeys.

Does the FCC only get notified on wireless devices, or do they get notified for wired devices too, as the need to be checked for interference?

If it's only wireless, then there could still be updated wired devices too, right?

The retangular mouse is interesting. Possibly to make more room for a touchpad on top?

i hope the mouse has laser technology that works even on glass.

They could supplement a regular laser mouse tech wth an accelerometer, but it seems unlikely that the tech for that would be developed and first used in such a big name company's devices.

reduced in size to, aesthetically, match up with the width of the tablet maybe?..

The FCC logos on the current might mouse are on the inside of the battery door. The size of these tell me that the tracking will solely be on the top of the device. One wouldn't move the mouse at all.

quite a good point

Has anyone else noticed that the shipping on the mighty mouse has been pushed to 2-3 weeks? sorry if i'm wrong but that seems off. has it always been like that or is that a clue?

How could they make the wireless keyboard any smaller? Its almost perfect now and almost the same size as the macbook key pads? A new mighty mouse would be awesome! That bloody rollerball is useless (I am on my fifth one in 4 years).

I have had a mighty mouse for three years. My 3 kids under 10 and their friends used it all that time. And it is in the kitchen. No issues.

You're doing something wrong.

Maybe; however my parents, brother and friends all had a similar experience (always with the rollerball) although they never felt the need to replace theirs (I like things to work properly).

I have no idea what this new product might be but personally hope its 'small-part free' and easier to maintain!

seems like the mouse doesn't have any sensor on the bottom..
maybe it has just an accelerometer?
