Netflix for iOS now lets you privately recommend content to select Facebook friends

Netflix today announced a new way to recommend movies and TV shows to your friends from your iPhone or iPad. The recommendation feature works using Facebook, but it’s selective and private so you don’t end up spamming everything with the embarrassing movie you just watched that you and two of your friends may like but others not so much. The feature allows you to connect your Facebook friends list to your Netflix account, then recommend videos you just watched to specific friends from Facebook.

If your friend is also using the feature, they will see your recommendations when browsing Netflix. Otherwise, the recommendation will be sent privately through a Facebook message.

The focus on privacy and not spamming is most interesting aspect of Netflix’s new way to use Facebook for recommending content.

Connecting will not post to Facebook or share what you watch to your friends’ News Feed.

That’s a welcome change from previous methods which could broadcast links to everything you watch to Facebook.

Netflix says the feature is available via “the website, iPad, iPhone, PS3, Xbox, and many set-top boxes and smart TVs,” which more platforms adding support later. Netflix for iPhone and iPad is available on the App Store.

I actually preferred the previous frictionless model where it simply generated a soft news feed post and updated your “Movies” and “TV Show” sections on your profile.

Braver than most, but I can see how it’s useful :)
