iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus take a beating in first ever drop test video

Screen Shot 2014-09-18 at 8.41.20 PM

Youtuber PhoneBuff has managed to get his hands on an iPhone 6 and 6 Plus at an Apple Store in Australia. In the video below, PhoneBuff puts these two devices through the ultimate torture test. Each device is dropped once on its back, on its side, and its face.

As you would imagine, eventually both devices met their maker. The iPhone 6 held strong throughout the side and back drop test and only was completely destroyed when being dropped on its face.

With the iPhone 6 Plus, the destruction came one drop earlier with a massive shatter to the screen when dropped on its side. This probably has to do with the weight distribution on the larger iPhone model, but either way if you drop an iPhone enough it’ll break. The best part is, the drop shots are shot with the 240fps Slo-Mo capabilities on the iPhone 6.

Check out the drop test video below for a closer look at the carnage:

Of course they’re going to break if you continue to drop them.
    Nonsense article.

    • Kai Herrera - 10 years ago

Obviously not the point, the point would be “how much damage can it take before it breaks”, not, “will it be damaged if it falls?” but nevermind.

What does it really matter?!?! We know you’re not supposed to drop the things!!! It all depends on what kind of surface you drop it on anyways… Dumb dumb dumber

    • secdj - 10 years ago

Actually i think its pretty helpful. It shows how resistant it is to drops… and even when nobody wants to drop it, accidents still occurs… First time I see an iPhone shattered and getting apart from the second drop… Not good at all… :(

      • Kwame Owusu (@kwamayze) - 10 years ago

Clearly, this is the worst iPhone ever in terms of durability

      • Alex Vizzini - 10 years ago

No. Depends on how and where you drop it. He kinda slammed these phones on the ground.

      • Chad Colliflower (@MRI3t) - 10 years ago

Exactly, soooooooo….. the first time you drop your phone and you pick it up and it’s not broken, there’s your test!! It’s no goddamn surprise they’re made of metal that scratches and glass that breaks! They’re not a rubber ball

    • Chad Colliflower (@MRI3t) - 10 years ago

Right??!! Ease drop test always boggle my mind… Want to take a perfectly gorgeous phone and ruin it???? I don’t go buy new dishes and videotape me dropping them in the kitchen

This isn’t the first drop test…

The kid from Perth (AU) beat him to it with a legitimate nationally broadcasted drop test haha.. First iPhone 6 real life scenario drop test:

  4. Brandon Boh (@branboh) - 10 years ago

what a waste of an iPhone.

  5. What ever happened to sapphire on these anyways? not that sapphire is immune but that would have one of things that pushed me to upgrade to be honest. I drop my phone a lot.

    • Michael Superczynski - 10 years ago

A nice hardshell case will protect your iPhone from drops.

    • krismortensen - 10 years ago

Sapphire was only rumored to be used for iPhones. It’s been revealed that sapphire is actually more likely to shatter on a drop because it’s a harder material, which means less flex to absorb impact. All especially amplified when utilized for such a great surface area.

If you drop your phone a lot, buy a full body protective skin and put your phone in a high quality case after you apply it. This model has the least protection of the screen than any prior model and will become infamous for that.

And don’t skimp on the Apple Care +!

Dropping expensive iPhones videos are just too painful to watch. Ugh…

  8. Peter Johnson - 10 years ago

This guy has absolutely no idea what the idiom “begs the question” means.

  9. mpias3785 - 10 years ago

No surprise at all. The 6/6+ design leaves the screen more vulnerable than any previous model. More people will be wishing that they had either invested in a quality case, Apple Care + or both.

This iPhone design will go down in history as the most fragile. Annoying because I’ll be buying the S version next year and it will likely keep the same design. At least I like buying cases, screen protectors and such. My 4S was in brand new condition when I sold it after two years of use and my year old 5s looks like it came out of the box yesterday. Does wonders for resale value!

While I’m a big Apple fan, I do see them going more for aesthetics than practicality at times. Jony Ive needs to be reeled in.

    • I’m not sure about this design being the most fragile. The 4 and 4s where by far worse than this, if you sneezed to hard you could shatter the front or back glass on those.

      • Kwame Owusu (@kwamayze) - 10 years ago

The 4s faredmuch better in drop tests

      • mpias3785 - 10 years ago

I had a 4s during a long hospital stay. I used a good case with a kick stand to watch Netflix rather than the hospital tv, and the hospital workers, from doctors to janitors would knock my phone 3-4′ to a hard linoleum floor about 3 times a day for two weeks. The phone survived despite the case having no padding. The 4s was a sturdy little phone.

iPhone 6 plus has bigger screen so it should affect less by the front drop(More areas to spread the force); but the front drop effect is wrongly reflected partly since the crack generated from the side drop did provide 6 plus some buffer(less compact or more areas to spread the force). I think one of reasons that 6 plus suffers from the side drop is due to its weight.
In my opinion, the most accurate test should be use three different phones to run three different tests.

    • acaijr - 10 years ago

Actually thats not true… I get ur reasoning but the more glass surface you have the better chance of breakage especially in the center where theres always more flex… When glass is heat treated (theres various levels to tempering) its not usually tempered to the very edge of the glass i think its 95% tempered.. so for example you get a piece of glass thats 1/2 thick 35″ x 70″ you can safely grind off atleast 1/4″ before it can potentially shatter.. So if you look at the iphone screens which are basically 1/32-1/64 of an inch thick if not less & ur tempering it its still no where near as good as using true protective case not to mention theres always that 1 weak corner on glass . Theres never no way to tell which corner is the weakest unless you go around hitting every corner & the metal doesnt absorb the shock either its too rigid…

So my thin, glass covered phone will shatter if I drop it on concrete. I’m shocked. :P

    AppleCare Plus… Sold. :-)

  13. Michael McCullough - 10 years ago

I remember a similar test for iPhone 5 and it seemed to hold up longer. I had the incipio NGP case for my iPhone 4s and my 5. it had a nice amount of lip around the screen to help prevent these screen shatters. I will most likely use that same case for the 6 since i tend to drop my phone all the time.

Check out the very different results (no shattered glass!?) of the new iPhone 6 drop tests on Android Authority:

Did anyone else expect this story to be about the guy from Perth, Australia who dropped his phone on national tv? :-)

  16. Krist Signomic - 10 years ago

I dropped my iphone 4 several times, but it’s fine, didn’t break and shatter. Why iphone 6 so fragile ? because of the size?

  17. What a complete waste. Some people have waited in line for days to purchase this phone and some people would love to get their hands on the device and can’t. This sort of test infuriates me and is of no use at all.

  18. TechPeeve (@TechPeeve) - 10 years ago

wow, if you’re going to do this, at least spend 30 minutes learning something about test methodology. Nothing consistent in this drop method at all. No one ever has a measurement of the drop height or control of the drop angle. This should be done on a new phone each time too.

  19. Stew Redman (@_REDDY71) - 10 years ago

You’re probably most likely to drop your phone from a worktop, pocket or face height depending on what you are doing at the time. Watch the video carefully. The iPhone 6 was dropped from below waist height onto its face. Considering its mass, the force of impact would have been relatively low. Make no mistake, this is a fragile device.

  20. Stew Redman (@_REDDY71) - 10 years ago

Much harsher drop test on Lumia 920, repeated with same phone. This is how you build a tough, usable device. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jH4xYN9I5Kw

But the phone is water resistant and dust resistant, right?

    Mine is.

  23. Here’s a real break of the iPhone 6 with the Phantom cam at 16,000 frames per second! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzsSV6-7YPQ

  24. Tom Kitta - 10 years ago

Wow, now I know why so many pp have these cracked iPhone screens. I have dropped both of my Android phones on the ground and once a friend dropped my phone on a curb hitting the edge – no damage beyond scratches.

  25. Stephanie Lomme - 9 years ago

mine has broken 2 times in 14 days. One from a chip in the side of the screen, that spread to a crack. The last one was a complete shatter from being dropped on it’s face. I have had 2 previous models for 5 plus years with no breaks. Seems a bit of a bad design…or a good design if you want to make money off of dropped phones.

    • mpias3785 - 9 years ago

Look up topic. Some wise man said: “This model has the least protection of the screen than any prior model and will become infamous for that.”

Oh yeah, that was me. :-)

Buy a case with a tough outer layer and a soft inner layer and a Zagg-type screen protector.

I waited in line to get an iPhone 6 Plus on Sept 19th, only to be told that there were no “6-Plus” phones available in my market, so I had to order it. I ordered one of Sept. 19th and it finally arrived on Thursday, November 13th. I ordered a case from Amazon the day my phone arrived but on Saturday, November 15th, after just two days of owning a $900 phone it slipped out of my hand and landed on a relatively soft surface (a wood floor). The bad part; It landed on the edge of the phone, which is a worst-case scenario. Of course the glass shattered and AT&T informed me that my insurance had a $200 deductible (a new iPhone 6 Plus is a tier 3 device, thus has the highest deductible). I bought an iPhone 2 when they first came out, and I have been under contract with AT&T, upgrading every two years since. I have always paid for insurance but have never filed a claim (I’ve never had a reason). My previous iPhones took a literal beating and the glass never scratched. What a bummer. It’s Christmastime when money is tight, and I have a $900 iPhone 6 Plus that’s gonna cost me another $200 to use. I feel like I have been gang-raped by AT&T and Apple!
More will be revealed by if you own a 6-Plus guard it against droppage with your life!

    I’m Japanese. MY IPHONE 6 PLUS is BROKEN,too. 私のiPhone 6 Plusも今年の1月1日にガラスが割れていました、特に石で叩いたりしたことはないのですが、慎重に取り扱わないとならないスマートフォンなんでしょうか。
