What is the difference between a candidate GM and a GM? Are we going to see the same issues with Yosemite that we saw with iOS 8?

    • Jörg Wißemann - 10 years ago

nevermind, you’re obviously not a developer

    • satchow (@satchow) - 10 years ago

One is a GM and the other one is a candidate to be a GM. No you won’t see the same issues, one is a desktop/laptop OS and the other is a phone/tablet OS.

    • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Gold Master is a interchangeable word with Release Candidate. Traditionally they don’t mean the same thing, but these days, they do.

Here’s an idea….if you can’t handle software bugs…don’t update day one.

    • Ray Wolf - 10 years ago

To actually give you an answer, it’s basically the possible GM. Once more testing is done if new issues are found then the build number will change with issues resolved and a new GM will be released.

    • I just updated to GM Candidate 3 with about a 54MB update and I still have finder crashes that has been a problem since Dev release 4. Anybody else still having this issue. I think this install is just doomed. Forced to use Pathfinder 7 to be able to navigate the system.

      • Jeff Valentine - 9 years ago

Do we need to update to the final version?

  2. mikiotty - 10 years ago

Is it available via Mac App Store for Public Beta users?

    • Zoheb Khan - 10 years ago

      no :(

      • mikiotty - 10 years ago

Ok, so it’s not my Mac’s problem. Thank you :)

      • ShervinTochahi - 10 years ago

actually it is available right now

    • andrewdcato - 10 years ago

      No.

      • Zoheb Khan - 10 years ago

yup its available right now as OS X Yosemite Beta 4… ;)

      • andrewdcato - 9 years ago

OS X Yosemite Public Beta 4 =/= Yosemite Golden Master.

  3. I’m already using GM and noticed that the Translucent menu bar option is gone from sys prefs…? WTF.

    • To change it, you have to select reduce transparency in the Accessibility panel… and not only removes menu bar translucency but all of the OS translucent effects. WTF. I just want the menu bar to not be transparent.

      • dominicrn - 10 years ago

No. The OS X Yosemite has entire system as translucency, So Why should we use only menu bar? To be fair enough it should disable for the entire window including menubar.

      • Scott Rocke - 9 years ago

I Photoshopped one of the great Yosemite backgrounds with a white bar across the top. At 300DPI, the white bar is 46px tall. Works like a charm so I look like I have a nice solid menubar and get the cool translucent menus.

    • thewordwright - 9 years ago

The new solid washed-out grey dock is horrible and – from what I can see – there is no way to change it!

  4. Dave Vaughan (@vaughaag) - 10 years ago

Downloading now. I’m hoping that the RC has continuity enabled, be interesting to see if some of the bugs have been ironed out since iOS 8 was released.

    • Dave Vaughan (@vaughaag) - 10 years ago

Handoff for iMessage, Mail and Safari works allot quicker than before and is more accurate with no misplaced characters.

      • Alan Camp - 9 years ago

How are you turning on Handoff in Yosemite. The option to turn on is now missing from the General tab.

  5. thienlh - 10 years ago

Downloading Yosemite Public beta 4 too!

  6. Keith - 10 years ago

Can I upgrade mavericks to this version w/o wiping the hard drive? An in-place upgrade? I am a registered developer.

    • ShervinTochahi - 10 years ago

yes you can update without losing any data just download the latest OS X 10.10 from Dev Center and install it, its will upgrade you from 10.9 to 10.10 no data lost in my case

  7. Nathan (@nathan_nadeau) - 10 years ago

They also tweaked the look of the volume UI.

  8. Patrick Evans - 10 years ago

I’m on Public Beta and just now received Yosimite Beta 4 via App Store and it’s 853mgs.. yeh haha

  9. Henri Ho - 10 years ago

    SMS Relay now back on

    • I’ve got an iPhone 6 on 8.0.2 and the latest dev GM (yes, I’m a registered dev). However I haven’t yet successfully gotten SMS relay to work. Any suggestions?

      • jeffgreenhut - 10 years ago

Try the iOS 8.1 beta? Thats what I am running and SMS relay works. Has a new UI for verifying enabling SMS relay that requires a code to be entered on the iPhone.

  10. Michel - 10 years ago

This is what is see when i’m login into my dev account.

    http://www.plaatjesdump.nl/upload/198c753f73ab02d485dfaa217fbfb1fb.png

Redeemd the code and then i see this:

    http://www.plaatjesdump.nl/upload/60a795587ba3c40c2226a0ccb3124521.png

Downloading it on my MBP with Mavericks.

  11. There’s a new UI for the volume and brightness adjustments.

  12. There is a change on Filevault2 login UI.

  13. Almog (@Almogos) - 10 years ago

    Handoff Supported: No
    Instant Hotspot Supported: No
On my Mac Mini MID 2011 with 4.0 LE BL so its officially not support all 4.0BL Macs

    • Handoff has been working fine for me on the previous PB

    • John Quinn - 10 years ago

I’m also testing on a mid 2011 Mac Mini –
Apple Bluetooth Software Version: 4.3.0f2 14775
      Hardware, Features, and Settings:
      Name: MacMini 2011
      Address: 28-xxxxxxxx
      Bluetooth Low Energy Supported: Yes
      Manufacturer: Broadcom

Seems to me that it SHOULD work, but the option does not appear in System Preference/ General/

  14. anyone else notice Safari is a little bit slower than the preview DP? or is it just me?

    • ShervinTochahi - 10 years ago

try to clean up memory most of time thats what make safari extremely slow

    • Almog (@Almogos) - 10 years ago

      Try to restart

    • Yeah i did both. And it’s not that it’s slow but it’s slightly slower than the previous DP which i thought was insanely fast. And even though i was taking a noticeable battery-life hit, I LOVED the speed. It doesn’t feel the same. :((

  15. Maximilian Novak - 10 years ago

New design of volume controls backlight keys control and brightness control.

  16. Taylor Snow - 10 years ago

Cool new feature after the Gold Master update, my Bluetooth no longer works. Mouse, keyboard and trackpad are all dead. Can’t even reconnect them… Am I supposed to wait for Hey Siri integration so she can do it all for me? Brand new 15″ MacBook Pro and all apple Bluetooth devices….

    • David Benston - 10 years ago

Yep, me too. Bluetooth is totally borked. Funny, that’s the first problem I’ve had since DP 2. Guess they want to make sure it’s broke before they go and release it.

      • David Benston - 10 years ago

After doing a bit of searching I found a fix for this…try turning it off and on. Seriously. I found some fairly complicated rituals centered around holding the power button down for particular intervals and holding this or that while wiggling your ears etc. I shut down, unplugged power and held down the power button . The mac booted like I’d just tapped power normally and now I have bluetooth. I’m figuring a plain old restart would have been fine.

  17. OS X Yosemite launching October 14th. Spoiled in System Preferences > Trackpad > Notification Center.

    • Good spotting, I did think it was a bit strange them releasing it the day after a finance call. A week before makes sense.

      • a previous 9to5mac posting had the release of Yosemite rumored to be the last week of October, so an October 28th release is not out of the question.

    • todz (@todzurwelt) - 10 years ago

      Hello,

      I have a noob question:
When apple releases officially OS X Yosemite will we need to go back to mavericks and then update from mac app store?

      Thanks,
      Regards.

      • thomasskyg - 9 years ago

No, I believe it’ll just be an update like the with the betas

  18. Jeff Valentine - 10 years ago

SMS Relay was working fine for me and now nothing. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    • Sebastien Bonnot - 10 years ago

it was removed in the last update

    • Dave Vaughan (@vaughaag) - 10 years ago

      I think…

      Settings-> Messages-> Text Message Forwarding

It comes up asking to enter a code the will load on your Mac but nothing appears on my Macbook or iMac when I move the slider.

      • Jason Mulvaney - 10 years ago

I’m having the same problem. No code coming up when I Settings-> Messages-> Text Message Forwarding. Been fiddling all afternoon with no luck

  19. Andrea Anderson - 10 years ago

ok so is the SMS on yosemite working again or not?

  20. Christian Kallias - 10 years ago

Will it be possible to upgrade from beta to GM or beta to Final ?

  21. Am I the only one who still hates the numbering? How on earth the x.10 can be higher than x.9?

    • australianloves - 10 years ago

Clearly you aren’t a dev…it won’t go to os 11. cause its 10.10. Dev numbering can go as high as it likes. OS XI(11) won’t probably happen for a little while. When they do a big update they will probably go to XI. just like how they went from OS 9 to OS X..

    • Because you’re just not living on the edge. Not living on the edge.

    • Jannis Grimm - 9 years ago

      It’s software, not math. x.8, x.9, x.10 (say: x point ten), x.11.

      And: x.9.1, x.9.2, …

Also possible: OS X 10.10.10 (tenth minor update to the tenth major update).

      It’s just a short form of OS X (10), Version 10, Update 10 and not a number.

  22. Toby Schuster - 10 years ago

Is it possible to install the GM Candidate and do the normal updates afterwards after they release Yosemite for the public? Or do I have to install the public release by that time to work properly?

  23. Installed this update this morning. Random logouts happening when opening various apps (mail/browser/finder/etc…) Not had 5 minutes without being logged out & can’t find a way to undo the latest patch. Have been using Yosemite for a while now without issue.

    • Steve Coates (@sjcoates) - 9 years ago

I too am experiencing the same problem – can’t download anything from app store – it just logs me out every time.

    • whaleyp - 9 years ago

Ditto – can’t even log a ‘Feedback Assistant’ report as that just logs me out also. Running late 2013 MBP, 16GB, 500GB HDD etc…. not impressed

      • jbt528 - 9 years ago

Does anyone have any suggestions or solutions for the logging off issue. My MBA is unusable right now.

        Any help would be appreciated.

      • whaleyp - 9 years ago

        All resolved…

        but takes a little while…

To clean install (not an expert but worked for me) restart computer and as starts up, press CMD and R and computer boots to recovery. Start with Disk Utility and erase your Harddrive (make sure backed up first). Close Disk Utility and then select reinstall. Computer goes off and downloads Beta 4 and clean installs but you have to reinstall your apps and files etc manually. If you Timemachine them you risk transferring the culprit that caused issues in the first place.

        Hope this helps.

        Good luck.

does anyone have any problems with storage levels in “about this mac” window? Mine shows storage usage exceeding its capacity. 121GB flash storage contains 151GB of photos and more than 60GB of audio, movies, backups, and apps in total

  25. Rob Homewood - 9 years ago

Is anyone else having fairly severe stability issues with PB4? all the others have been pretty stable but I keep getting kicked to the login screen when I do simple things like minimise windows or preview images? I’ve submitted feedback reports on it. Feels good to know I’m helping to get it ready for launch but it’s kind of annoying me. I might restore a backup and reinstall the update..

    • I’m having exactly the same issues (see 2 posts up) however every time I press the submit button on the feedback assistant, I get logged out and the feedback report gets aborted! Can you (or anyone else) tell me how (using time machine) I could recover back to the point before the update was applied? Thanks in advance.

      • Rob Homewood - 9 years ago

I did a time machine backup just before updating. If you restart your computer and hold ” cmd + r ” while it boots up and it will bring up the recovery screen. Then you just select the restore from time machine backup you’re all good :)

        Good Luck

      • Cheers – I’ll give that a go ( I did read that elsewhere but was hoping for a more simple ‘undo’ function (hope apple is listening ;) )

        Thanks again.

      • whaleyp - 9 years ago

I’ve done exactly this and it worked – I’m back to the more stable version of Yosemite but that app store icon keeps wanting me to upgrade!

I’m not sure that I’ll see subsequent (newer) versions unless I take the plunge again so I may well now try what monkey bill (below) suggests and do a clean install – I’m not really sure I know how to do that but hey, every day is a school day :)

      • monkeybill - 9 years ago

monkeybill… expert or not, it worked… thank you! :)

    • monkeybill - 9 years ago

Same problem for me with macbook pro retina 2014. Really annoying auto logging me out every few minutes and can’t feedback to Apple as that logs me out too. Used Time Machine backup to revert?to Beta 3. Hope this does not become final version.

      • monkeybill - 9 years ago

Okay, Ive ended up reinstalling Beta 4 from recovery mode but completely blanking my hard drive first and then one by one installing my apps back and then finally transferring my documents from my Time Machine but not using the Migration Tool, just manually. All works fine now and I have a Beta 4 version of Yosemite. It is very quick and no issues identified so far. Pain getting it working but at least no random log outs now and in fact, the machine seems a lot faster than when I installed by upgrading Mavericks and then upgrading each time from App Store. When final version is released, I may go the same way, takes time but is effective and keeps the machine running at much better speeds.

      • whaleyp - 9 years ago

OK- I’ve seen you’ve got it sorted 0 but a GM should just…well… work, right? Surely the process will not leave us with ‘broken’ installs that require that process? I can’t even log an issue through the feedback assistant as that crashes me out too! :)

      • monkeybill - 9 years ago

I completely agree whaleyp, a GM should just work. I have used feedback assistant to feed the problems and solutions I used up to Apple, not sure how much use as I could not use feedback assistant like you when I was having same log out issues.

      • whaleyp - 9 years ago

So… took the advice and did a recovery install – then re-installed apps and dragged time machine backups into appropriate folders.. now have a fully reliable Yosemite… we need to find the problem guys… my previous experience is going to be the same as 99.999% of the planet… no more flubbers, please!!

  26. makaivier - 9 years ago

I feel as though that even the GM build still lags and overall slow. Mavericks runs very fast on my retina mac book pro, but as soon as Yosemite is installed, it just loses the speed. Safari is slower loading pages, the boot time as almost tripled, crashing and freezing. Shouldn’t the GM be “almost” perfect if its basically the final build. I’m not sure if I will be updating to the final public version later this month.

    • DCNY - 9 years ago

I have latest retina 15″ MacBook Pro as well. It’s very slow in beta 2. especially when i switch between the app. It lags and has spinning ball all the time. Anyone has the same issue?

      • DCNY - 9 years ago

        I meant GM 02
