Nest Mobile iOS app pulled from App Store following crashing issue

Update: Looks resolved…

The official Nest Mobile app for iPhone and iPad appears to have been removed from the App Store for the time being following complaints from users that the latest version of the app crashes at launch. The Nest Mobile app is used to remotely interface with the Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide detector from the iPhone and iPad.

Nest has acknowledged the issue via Twitter with a message regarding the software bug: “We’re currently investigating an issue causing the Nest iOS app version 4.4.0 to quit unexpectedly. We’ll provide a status update shortly.” Nest founder and CEO (and former Apple exec) Tony Fadell also acknowledged the issue on Twitter offering an apology to a user.

The Google-owned company has a history of running into software issues with its products. Since its launch, the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm has had a history of reporting false alarms to users in some instances.

Earlier this year, the company temporarily removed the Nest Protect from sale following a bug with the ‘wave to dismiss’ feature that could unintentionally dismiss the alarm in the case of an actual fire. The wave feature was remotely disabled and has yet to return to the product.

Apple has continued to offer the Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Protect as part of the Apple Store’s ‘Connected Home’ category since Nest’s acquisition by Google.

I’m now regretting the auto update feature in iOS, not being able to control my Nest is annoying. What did I do before this? Oh, that’s right….I’d walk over to it and change the temperature in person.

I’m lucky the automatic SU didn’t kick in on time for me. I feel your loss though (even if it is a really, really first-world problem! :-p ).

We have not had any problems with our First Gen Nest and the iOS apps. Waiting on the new Nest thermostat firmware / software download.

4.4.1 is available on the App Store now.

  4. It looks like they haven’t added the new update to any International iTunes stores… I can confirm the entire Nest app is missing from the Australian store.

Are others seeing this still too?

I certainly hope Nest is going to resubmit into the international stores again!!
