Apple has updated its homepage today in commemoration of Martin Luther King, which Apple CEO Tim Cook has often noted as an inspiration for his work. Cook says he has pictures of Martin Luther King on his desk. However, this is the first time Apple has recognised Martin Luther King day (which happens on the third Monday of every January) so openly on its website.
Many American tech companies give employees the day off, but Apple has elected not to do this. Instead of paid leave, Apple is encouraging employees to volunteer. As part of its gift matching program, Apple will donate an additional $50 for every voluntary hour worked by employees.

I think companies mandating this as a holiday is silly. It should be optional. If this day is really important to some employees and they want to use it as a day of service or whatever then let them have that day off. But I’ll bet the majority of employees who get this day off aren’t doing anything to celebrate MLK, aren’t volunteering, marching etc. Its just a day off to them, that those in colder climates would rather have off in the summer.
Yes, but the same could be said for other holidays that honor leaders.
Being a former Apple Employe for many years. There was no chance in hell to get this day off its a sales holiday in their eyes. And its pretty ignorant to assume its “just a day off to people”, you must live in the suburbs.
I believe no matter what the source that American history and its great leaders need to be remembered. Who knows, perhaps the people interviewed who thought Dr King was still alive and was the first black astronaut have Apple products and will now know better.
