Apple Pay coming to 200,000 vending machines, kiosks, paid parking & other self-serve locations

While individual retailers have been announcing support for Apple Pay as more NFC terminals enable the service, it’s still hit and miss on vending machines and other self-serve, unattended hardware. USA Technologies today announced it’s bringing support to around 200,000 of these self-serve payment terminals that its customers use for everything from coffee brewers to vending machines, kiosks, laundry equipment and pay parking terminals.

“Our customers are excited to accept Apple Pay at the self-serve locations they operate,” said Stephen P. Herbert, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of USA Technologies. “We anticipate that the millions of consumers who frequent these locations will appreciate the convenience and security of using Apple Pay for their everyday purchases, and we believe that Apple Pay will help to drive additional sales for our customers. USA Technologies has always sought to provide convenience, security and an easy way to pay for consumers who are less and less likely to carry cash.”

The company offers a suite of services for companies looking to deploy self-serve, cashless terminals. A few examples it lists as current markets include vending machines, pay laundry machines, kiosks, amusement parks and arcades, car washes, and transit services.

USA Technologies says it has deals with big brands like Starbucks and also many smaller mom and pop shops, so you can expect Apple Pay to work at many more self-serve locations starting today.

Others have made similar announcements recently with Chevron announcing plans to bring Apple Pay directly to payment terminals at its gas pumps in the near future.

Western Union also announced the roll out of Apple’s new payment service today as Apple earlier this month added support for additional banks and card issuers.

    Here comes the future.

    • For it to be the future it needs to release in other countries apart from the States :(

Apple Pay already works in other parts of the world if you have a US credit card.

NFC PayPass terminals are prevalent in many countries like Australia and the UK.

Once Apple extends support for non-US credit cards Apple Pay will rock markets like a tsunami.

My thought exactly. This technology needs to make its way into restaurants. I’m increasingly finding places where wait staff takes orders on mobile devices so equip them with NFC readers or just install them on the table if the architecture allows for it. If the table has to pay at a centralized POS terminal, equip IT with a terminal.

There is a enormous opportunity to reduce the need to take your credit card out of your pocket and expose it to anyone.

I’m wondering if Chili’s Ziosk platform can be updated to include Apple Pay? Since they have a terminal at every table, it seems this would be the perfect application for such a thing.

fattym77, yes, terminals like Ziosk are what I had in mind when I was referring to installing NFC readers on the table. Like you said, it’s a perfect application.

Would be nice if USA technologies provided an interactive location-finder map for these newly rolled-out machines.

Still, I’m glad to see an increasing number of these articles about merchants adding support to ApplePay. I’m noticing the same thing myself: I’m now regularly using ApplePay at Home Depot and Walgreens. Still hoping for Safeway, though! (Now that SaveMart/Lucky/Albertsons has added it, I’m guessing Safeway won’t be far behind….)

  3. Make sure you show the vending machine your photo id and have it write down your info on a piece of paper.

Or, swipe another credit card – just to verify that your ApplePay and the second credit card are registered to the same person.

(This is sarcasm – just in case it’s not clear).

Has been working great at my office vending machines since release.

We have had a Coke machine in our local Winco Grocery store for a few weeks now that takes Apple Pay. I have tested it and it works great, when the machine itself is working. The machine has been out of service 1/2 the time I have seen it.

I’ve only used Pay at McDonalds, Walgreens, and used it to buy an online ticket to a New Year’s event through Eventbrite. Can’t wait till it’s available everywhere.

  7. you can use ApplePay at Sheetz gas pumps but not in the store itself

    • theagentmike - 9 years ago

All the Sheetz gas stations I’ve been to here in Maryland don’t yet accept Apple Pay. They have a sticker on the pump that mentions you can tap a valid pay card or device but there’s no actual NFC reader on the pumps.
I felt silly trying to wave my iPhone around the front of the pump to see if anything showed up on my phone to pay, but no luck.

Hopefully they will add NFC to their pumps soon.

Expect to pay $5 for that small bottle of Coke in one of these vending machines….

With such increbedile profit rate and earnings, Apple shows that its success is linked to its innovation ability. Apple Pay is a good example of such a success, as, when Android offers several mobile payment systems and options, Apple offers one single option and most users and blue chips go for it
