Apple airs its first ad for the Chinese New Year, similar to U.S. ‘The Song’ ad

Apple has updated its website for China with a new video advertisement in celebration of the Chinese New Year. The one-and-a-half minute advertisement is largely similar to Apple’s “The Song” ad for the United States that aired during this past Christmas and holiday season…

In the new ad, a granddaughter utilizes Apple software and hardware to convert a vintage audio recording to a format playable on an iPad. For the U.S. version of the ad, Apple shared a behind-the-scenes tour of the ad’s creation.

This new ad is significant as it is Apple’s first in China. This advertisement comes at a time when Apple is rapidly growing in China. Apple is opening up several new stores for China this year, and Senior VP of Retail Angela Ahrendts has been recruiting U.S.-based retail employees to relocate to China.

    Pretty cool.

I can see Apple wants to localize the ad. But they shouldn’t do it like that. If I’m Chinese I would want to see an entirely new ad, not a “copycat” of the old ad.

A great ad. – subtle and thus effective – tears to the eye stuff; it will go down well in China.
