Mega Poll: Are you buying an Apple Watch? If so, which one?

Apple today gave us the full rundown on the Apple Watch, revealing new details including all of the available variants and their prices. The Apple Watch Sport is going to start at $349 (as we already knew), but the mid-tier Apple Watch is going to start at $549, while the top-end Apple Watch Edition will be starting at $10,000 (and go all the way up to $17,000).

There are a total of 38 models listed in the Apple online store, and this is a pretty wide range of options to choose from considering they’re all functionally identical. But the question, knowing the prices and models available, is this: Are you going to get one? And if so, which of the 38 models are you leaning towards?

Today, the battery life of the device was revealed, with Tim Cook saying on stage that the watch will get “all-day battery” or “18 hours on a single charge.” Apple also made it clear that you’ll be able to change out bands as you please. The “Leather Loop” and the “Milanese Loop” among other straps are already available from Apple’s website starting at $49.

The Apple Watch officially launches on April 24th in 9 countries, and preorders start on April 10th. Until then, you can go update your iOS device to iOS 8.2 and check out the companion app. Let us know below which of the 38 Apple Watch variants you’re interested in (or none at all if that’s the case for you), and if you need to look at some pictures, head over to Apple’s website.

Just as I was when it was first announced, I’m excited for generation 2. This initial version I’m not too stoked on.

    • ericisking - 9 years ago

I’m sure the each generation will be a little better than the one before, but what specifically are you waiting for and/or expecting in generation 2?

      • charilaosmulder - 9 years ago

Compare it to iPhone/iPad. You could expect things like significantly thinner, faster&more software updates, much better battery life, much better water resistance, the rumored health sensors that were one of the originally intended use scenarios.

      • ifunography - 9 years ago

Native apps for the Watch will probably come in version 2. That will be interesting, and we’ll likely see some new hardware integrated to make that possible.

      • I’m in the same boat. It’s less waiting for something and more that I haven’t been convinced to spend the money on ~this~ watch.

    • Derik Guimarães - 9 years ago

      Same here

    • PMZanetti - 9 years ago

Yea ok. Just wait for gen 4. It will be really great by then. Meanwhile the rest of us will enjoy 4 years of using it.

      • capdorf - 9 years ago

        Enjoy!

    • Inaba-kun (@Inaba_kun) - 9 years ago

The Apple Watch as it stands now screams first generation. It’s incredibly think and chunky and has terrible battery life. It’s also remarkably bland looking, really no more than a rounded square. That’s fine for an icon, but a piece of jewellery? Not so much.

Personally I have no interest in watches of any kind, but if I was in the market for a smart watch, some of the circular Android ones announced recently look, to my eyes, to be the most attractive and classy.

  2. andreww500 - 9 years ago

I’ll probably still get it, but the price for the Space Black Stainless Steel one is a little ridiculous in the UK. It’s £949 which is around $1,450…

    • ruinelsoncarneiro - 9 years ago

Shhhh… hot that doesn’t propagate to the resto of Europe…

    • Why are the non US prices so inflated? That same watch in Canada is $519! Same price as an iPad here. I’m not paying a $120 premium, especially when the iPad is only a $20 premium over the US.

      • markbharr - 9 years ago

Stronger US Dollar causing higher converted prices.

      • monty72 - 9 years ago

I thought it was because the US list price excludes VAT/TAX and the UK/EURO list price includes it.

  3. bpbatch - 9 years ago

At these prices, there is NO chance I will buy an Apple Watch. And I can’t imagine, if this thing does take off, how many assholes will use their watch at full volume in public to make phone calls.

    • RP - 9 years ago

It’s going to sell well. I would say first gen iPad numbers. The sales are going to skew young. This product has youth written all over it.Well except for the gold one. That one has Kardashian written all over it.
But I think the average Watch age will be around 25yo. Older people are just barely wrapping their heads about owning a smartwatch, getting this on people over 45 is going to be interesting. And actually, Apple should be glad older people are not wearing it. Seeing it on a middle age men rocking one would instantly turn people off to it.

      • Tony - 9 years ago

Interesting what you say about the demographic skewing young. Aren’t these the kids who don’t wear watches at all? I thought they all used their cell phones to tell the time.

      • Sandy - 9 years ago

Hmmm … I’m not in the “youth group” by a long shot, but I’m going to get an Apple Watch. Don’t arbitrarily lump all of any age group into one pile — we’re all different, we all have differing interests and differing priorities.

      • bpbatch - 9 years ago

I’m not in the youth group but don’t lump me in with the youth group? Well said, genius.

      • Rick (@PalmBchCitizen) - 9 years ago

RP, that’s age discrimination. Besides, most “older” men could probably buy and sell you with their pocket change. You should respect those men, because one day, if you’re lucky, you will be middle aged too.

Also, by your “logic”, no one should wear the Apple Watch because ‘older men’ like Tim Cook and Jony Ive wear one?

Dump your age prejudice dude and realize that anybody that owns an iPhone can easily operate a Apple Watch. This isn’t rocket science.

      • In reply to Tony: Isn’t that the point of the Apple Watch, use your phone when it’s socially unacceptable, like in class or at work? Heck! Why not do it while your boss it talking at in important meeting!?

      • majorhavoc83 - 9 years ago

I also think it will sell well, and I suspect this may not be part of an annual update, though I have no basis for that thought; just a feeling. Anyway, I plan on getting a 42mm model, and *GASP!* I’m older than 45!! Frankly, as someone else pointed out, many kids don’t even wear a watch; they just look at their phone for the time (if they bother to check the time at all). I think the “youth market” may be more interested if/when the app market develops more mature/interesting/compelling things.

      • RP - 9 years ago

everything tells time now. Your car has a clock, the microwave, the stove, the tv, your computer, your cell phone. So today there really is no real need for one for anyone young or old to own a traditional watch. The Apple Watch is a natural transition. I just meant that I know a lot of older people who are resistant to anything new and wonder why anyone one would want one. I know it’s not all older people. It’s a broad generalization, but one which has a lot of sticky behind it.

      • Tony - 9 years ago

Just for the record, I am 75 years old and I will have an Apple Watch next month. I bought Apple stock when it was $25 a share and retired on it. I also have a 6+.

      • thomasskyg - 9 years ago

To those of you saying that young people only look at their phones, to tell time, I agree. Keeping track of time just wouldn’t be the reason for them to buy it, as your phone and everything else can do that. The fashion appeal, the notifications and fitness though, that’s what we want.

      • Gazoo Bee - 9 years ago

Completely off about the 25 year olds being the target or largest market IMO. Women, and older men are the target here certainly. This isn’t even something you’d buy *for* your kids, and what 25 year old kid has $1000 to drop on a watch, when he has no experience of what a watch even is as people mostly stopped wearing them before he was born.

    • Many shared your opinion on iPad too. I bought an iPad for more than what I will pay for my Apple Watch. Many will buy the Apple Watch. I am 100% sure they will sell more than they sold iPads.

      • Rick (@PalmBchCitizen) - 9 years ago

I don’t think so, Elias. The iPad changed the way we relate to the written word. That’s why it is huge. Watches, on the other hand, are now almost fashion accessories that are not necessary to keep up with time. The Apple Watch, as much as I lust after one, is more or less an extension of the iPhone. That’s why you have to pair it up with the iPhone 5 or 6 to get the full functionality of the watch. They will sell millions, but no where like the iPad, or even the iPod, IMHO.

      • capdorf - 9 years ago

To own an iPad you didn’t have to own an iPhone

    • PMZanetti - 9 years ago

      Mmmm that jealously is loud.

    • iphonenick (@iphonenick) - 9 years ago

You sound like a crank. That’s too bad, but it’s your choice to be that way.

You’ve obviously haven’t bought a quality watch before. I bought a basic Longines for $1,200 and all it does is keep time and has a chronograph.

btw – many people walk around public places conducting conversations in speakerphone mode. Do you confront them to inform them of their asshole status?

      • iamapalled - 9 years ago

I would love to confront them of their “asshole status”, but unfortunately I am not a confrontational person. Even though it drives me insane when these people talk on speakerphone or play angry birds at full volume in a quiet waiting room (no headphones), I just don’t have the courage to make them stop. I don’t understand how anyone could not realize that forcing everyone to listen to your conversation or listen to your game is just plain rude. Headphones were invented for a reason, so that you would not disturb others as you listen to your music. Somehow, those “assholes”, as you call them, believe it is their god given right to disturb other people because they are too good to use headphones or use their phone in *gasp* NORMAL PHONE MODE.

btw – I am the guy who when getting a phone call in a quiet place, waits until I have exited the quiet place before answering the call. It is just common curtesy.

I await all the hateful replies about how speakerphone people have rights too. I know they have the right to do it, I just still feel it is just a bit rude….

      • bpbatch - 9 years ago

Spot on with this synopsis. I guess this makes you a “crank,” too! LOL!

  4. i think it’s okay to spend such a huge amount of money on a phone cuz it actually has many uses, but spend on a watch just as much as on a top of the line phone is plain dumb unless you can swap the inners every year for like 4 or 5 years from now and keep it updated to the current generation
i love the Milanese loop 42mm but im not willing to spend 800 euros on a watch, my 6 Plus costs almost just as much

  5. RP - 9 years ago

So, so far 22 people here say they are going to spend 15 THOUSAND dollars? Color me skeptical..
If so that’s $330 G’s for Apple right there.

  6. Smigit - 9 years ago

I’m going to wait a year. I was eyeing the Stainless Steel with Link bracelet, but at $1000 its a fair bit more than I’m willing to throw down on a device that I think will see major advancements over a short period.

I’m a bit disappointed in the pricing of the bands to be honest. $300 for a Link bracelet over a leather strap seems excessive to me, even for an Apple product which traditionally attracts some sort of premium. I imagine there will be a massive after sales market for third party bands, so along with waiting for the second generation device I’d like to see what bands third parties release. It wouldn’t surprise me if by the time the second gen model comes, I won’t be able to easily purchase the lowest priced Steel Apple Watch (currently $549) and get an aftermarket strap for $99 or so that looks just as good as the Apple one.

  7. spiralynth - 9 years ago

    Ahem …

Why is the soon-to-be-my-precious combo not on this poll:
    – 42mm Stainless Steel Case with Space Black Stainless Steel Link Bracelet ($????)

    Quelle horreur!!

    • dugbug - 9 years ago

You wouldn’t get the matching space black stainless watch?

      • spiralynth - 9 years ago

        @dugbug

I believe I’d like the dense-n-intense black-on-black combo to be separated by a glimmer of silver. IOW, I think I’d like the aesthetic break-up of the absence of light that a silver glimmer would bring to my precious timer.

I may think differently when I see it in person, but based on what I see on the mixyourwatch dot com configurator, I’d prefer the stainless steel case.

    • Jason Ames - 9 years ago

I want the 42mm space black watch, with the black sport band, a combo not offered, I need a friend like who that will swap out.

  8. madmen8 - 9 years ago

Add the answer: “Fuckthat I’m getting the new MacBook instead for less…”
Call me an idiot but I’d rather keep my Michael Kors and carry a 2 pound 12 inch screen with Force Touch

  9. golfersal - 9 years ago

I’m sorry. I love Apple and my Macbook pro, my Ipad and Iphone. But are you kidding how lazy you have to be that you just can’t take a phone out of your pocket and purse and do things.
I am 58 and have problems seeing things in the first place, for me to read email on a watch, give me a break. I just can’t get excited for having to wear something that I haven’t worn in 20 years, a watch.

People don’t realize that for the Iwatch to work you have to also have a phone and that phone has to be in the area. So why have both???
Of course it is stylish and makes one look great having it on your wrist, but honestly I would much rather wear a Rolex before having a Iwatch on my wrist.

    • Drive23 (@LanceOkawa) - 9 years ago

Contrary to your belief, its the opposite of laziness that makes the iWatch useful. I jog, bike, hike, play basketball or kayak literally everyday. I bike to work. Now all I have to do is look at my wrist when I’m stopped to see that my fiancé has texted me. When I’m jogging I don’t have to unstrap my cell phone from my arm to see my splits. i don’t have to pull my phone from my dry bag when I’m kayaking. So yeah for golfing you’re probably ok carrying a iPhone in your pocket but for any other REAL sport you probably don’t want to carry you phone in your pocket.

FYI you don’t need to have your phone with you for it to work. You only need to have it with you to take calls, receive texts and make use of GPS. It functions as a fitness device, music player and timepiece without a phone.

  10. David Allen Wizardgold - 9 years ago

The black stainless steel would be lovely but I will have to go for the 42mm in aluminium. I’m not keen on the colours of the straps on the sport model. Only the black one is going to be any good. I do like the Milanese strap though.

  11. Gale A. Molinari - 9 years ago

If I am going to spend that kind of change on a watch it isn’t going to be by Apple.

  12. Graham J - 9 years ago

No, the pricing is too high IMO. If it was lower I’d stay in the halo but right now the new Pebble looks much more attractive.

    • iphonenick (@iphonenick) - 9 years ago

9to5mac should do a poll to determine how many of the people complaining about Apple Watch’s high price are Android users.

      • Richard Nelap - 9 years ago

I am a Apple product user, Iphone ( since the 3G ), Ipad and a 6th gen ipod nano. I am complaining about the pricing as there is zero difference between the $350 and the $16,000 dollar device as to the internals. You are paying for a different case material and band, with the exception that the Edition’s will have a longer warranty period.

  13. jedimindtrick99 - 9 years ago

Why another month?! April 24th , almost 5months into the year, what happened to early 2015? Oh you meant early half of 2015, oh so deceiving…..

    • Typically, Apple breaks the year up into three periods. Early, Mid and Late. January 1st to April 30th: Early. May 1st to August 30th: Mid. September 1st to December 31st: Late.

Recently Apple has been releasing everything in the ‘Late’ period because this means “Holiday Spending Money!”

  14. F$ck no! Not till I can take it surfing and check my email in the water.

  15. Dino Monzidelis - 9 years ago

Can Someone explain to me why the Sport Watch comes with two bands while the steel watch with rubber band comes with one?

  16. just1n12 - 9 years ago

The Apple Watch Sport here in Canada is $449 for the 38mm and $517 for the 42mm, stupid Canadian taxes! Can’t afford any of them.

    • USD$349 = CAD$440.87 as of today..

And that’s without any conversion fee. Sometimes prices are so high in Canada, but I guess this time, it’s all about the poor CAD value against the USD.

  17. Eric Dickson - 9 years ago

    Any talk of water resistance?

    • Sterling Miller - 9 years ago

According to Appleinsider the Apple Watch is IPX7 certified:
“Under the IPX7 designation, the Apple Watch will be able to withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. This means that a session in the shower, getting caught in the rain, or washing your hands will not cause damage, but prolonged exposure — such as swimming — would be harmful.”

    • Iven Tenz (@ivenalot) - 9 years ago

Meaning its Water Resistant but not Water Protected.

  18. Dan (@danmdan) - 9 years ago

$449 for an expansion band, — yes, just the band, is a bit MUCH. Hopefully there will be Chinese/Japanese versions soon. It may have to be the Pebble Time Steel after all !

  19. mpias3785 - 9 years ago

It looks ok but I’m just not interested. If I were though, I’d be concerned about the battery life further on down the road. 18 hours with limited use may be 10 hours after a year and having an extra item to charge and an extra charger to carry when traveling just doesn’t get my wallet opening juices flowing.

  20. jamesjonesdet - 9 years ago

For the stainless steal versions each one has a caption of “Stainless steel or space black stainless steel case”. If you can add that with another strap I would get that one. If it’s just generic wording I will drop down the the space gray sport.

  21. Gary Conrad - 9 years ago

So can I order the $349 Sport Watch and add a Milanese band for $149 extra? I don’t see this option but it is the one I want.

    • You’ll have to purchase the additional band separately.

    • jedimindtrick99 - 9 years ago

I hear that the Sport watch only can use sport bands/straps.
The Stainless watch fits all straps and gold only fits gold accent straps.
That’s what I read out of the info.
But third parties will make more just wait a month after release

  22. Leif Paul Ashley - 9 years ago

I’m wound up and wanted one back in November… September? Whatever lol

  23. The difference between 38 and 42mm here in Australia is AU$170. Huge no-thanks, when the difference US$50 in the US, which is AU$64. Not happy.

    • Gazoo Bee - 9 years ago

Apple has been ripping off Canadians the same way for a while now. They just doubled down on this shit and made prices even higher a few weeks ago.

  24. charismatron - 9 years ago

Cheers to the early adopters with deep pockets.

I enjoy my phone, and it serves my purposes excellently. I have no use for an Apple Watch. It’s just that simple. I’m far more impressed with what they did with their MacBooks. What they’ve pulled off is off the hook!

  25. nathanadams - 9 years ago

I’m interested, but going to wait until the second generation for three reasons:
    — Already blown my budget for tech in the last few months (iPhone 6 + Retina iMac).
    — Aussie dollar is in the shit a the moment against the USD, so that makes it even more relatively expensive.
    — Hoping that the next one is slightly slimmer, so that it sits better on my scrawny wrists.

Roll on next year, and I’d be keen on a Sport model with a leather band.

  26. yojimbo007 - 9 years ago

    Yes.. Im buying 2 ..
At thus time Without seeing them in person
38 sport with white band + extra pink for the wife.
42 sport black With white band + extra blue band for me!
No doubt we will experiment with other bands as well ..

After i see them.. We may change our minds !
Got to get a better feel for the finishes !

  27. The first versions of iPhone and iPad I got screwed on. Remember when Apple lowered the price of the first iPhone by $150 after 6 months? I’ll wait.

  28. Pierre Calixte - 9 years ago

I would like to buy the Steel Space black watch but that it doesn’t have many matching bracelets. I wonder why.

    • spiralynth - 9 years ago

      Incomplete poll. That’s all.

It’s yer watch and ye can put a blarney rubber band bracelet on it if ye wanted.

  29. spart3n117 - 9 years ago

May buy the 42mm Space Grey Black band Sport. For $400, it’s okay. But $700 for the regular is a joke. Most people will buy the sport now.

    • Gazoo Bee - 9 years ago

Anyone with an iota of fashion sense that wants to wear it as an everyday watch will get the steel one.

Only when you are still in high school is it actually acceptable to wear something like the Apple Watch Sport anywhere but a gym or a park.

      • bpbatch - 9 years ago

Actually, anyone with a high school attitude would make such a comment about who sits at the “cool table” at lunch.

  30. Rick (@PalmBchCitizen) - 9 years ago

Love the watch. It’s another home run for Apple and will absolutely BURY the “competition”.

Now, having established by fanboy cred, I gotta say that I’m deeply disappointed in the $10,000 Watch Edition. This would be the first time (excluding the new Mac Pro) that Apple has created a product that is obviously unaffordable for the general public. The gold watch was designed specifically for the 1% and I couldn’t be more disappointed. It’s not enough that Apple is the richest company in the world, but why do they have to start catering to the richest people in the world? I know it’s probably just a marketing ploy, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth that they are manufacturing a product that will never be seen on the arm of the average American.

  31. joegov - 9 years ago

That 18 hours will be 12 hours after 6-12 months of daily use.

  32. Duston Foster - 9 years ago

    Where is the option for…
“Sports watch with ‘X’ colour band, then going to wait for the $20 Japanese knockoffs”

Seriously this is exactly what I am going to do

  33. This is probably the best smartwatch out there, but it lacks features I’d like to it to have. I will not go jogging with an iPhone to utilise this gadgets functionality. That’s why this product is useless for me. I’m pretty convinced the next generation will be more independent and can work usefully long period of times without the iPhone. Then I’ll probably buy it.

  34. Mo Shehab (@wamid) - 9 years ago

42mm Stainless Steel with classic buckle + extra Milanese loop and a black sports band.

  35. minieggseater - 9 years ago

They try and sell it on convenience of not talkjng your phone out but think about it why would you swap a one handd device for a two handed one ….. Try using your smart watch whilst holding a coffee waiting hor a train etc as opposed to taking your ophone 5/6 out of your pocket

    • capdorf - 9 years ago

So you have an iPhone 4 or 5?

      • minieggseater - 9 years ago

A 6 plus which us akso a two handed device

  36. If I understood correctly about the entry level watches…and it’s made of aluminum….i think people would be stupid to buy it, yes? those crap will easily be smashed?

  37. prius3 - 9 years ago

I don’t understand how could one spend 10k$ on a device that in 2 years is already completely obsolete. And with a battery about to stop working after charging it *every* day.

  38. Daniele (@DanPorcaro) - 9 years ago

I actually see a problem with this watch. Usually you paid hundreds to have a longtime watch… Now you’d pay hundreds for a watch with a life cycle of 2 years…

  39. Rob Elliott - 9 years ago

I don’t wear a watch now and I’m not going to begin wearing one just to attract attention to myself. I wonder how many car accidents and lost lives this watch will produce? Its been said before and I will repeat it now. Apples Billions in revenue is not sustained by its technologies and gadgets but rather its ingenious marketing engine which is able to generate a perception far from reality…

    • iphonenick (@iphonenick) - 9 years ago

You’d be surprised to learn that Samsung spends more than Apple, Coca Cola and any car brand on advertising. It’s the products stupid and people use their disposable income to buy them, again and again.

  40. Guys can anyone answer my question? Can I use any 42mm bracelet if I have a Gray Alum Watch? Suppose the Leather loop?

  41. Leonardo Maracino - 9 years ago

Has anybody considered the fact that normal watches have a battery that they can change, where the Apple Watch won’t allow to do that?
If you buy a watch for that price (400$), then you expect it to have a life time similar to other watches of that price. But this is not the case.
I wonder how that will effect people choices.

  42. Don Horne (@DonHorne) - 9 years ago

I have my share of Apple devices and have a naturally curiosity about the Apple Watch but I honestly can not find any real reason to own one (or any smart watch). It just seems like just another attention distracting device for the general population.

  43. Ill wait, till the price comes down.

  44. DamoTheBrave - 9 years ago

Would have liked to see a question – “If not, why not?” followed by reasons people don’t want to buy it.

  45. Gazoo Bee - 9 years ago

Weird. The majority of PEOPLE (male or female) actually have wrists that will only fit the small 38mm one, yet the 42mm one is the most popular by far. Hmmm….

  46. Sterling Jordan - 9 years ago

Only reason the Space versions are the most popular is because the stainless steel versions are simply way too expensive. For a watch that does absolutely nothing different no matter which version you get, especially a first gen product, I’ll be sticking to the cheapest best choice lol
