At its I/O developer conference last week, Google announced its own mobile payment service similar to Apple Pay called Android Pay coming later this year. Apple is expected to announce enhancements to Apple Pay next week at its WWDC developer conference including a rewards system. The keynote kicks off on Monday, June 8th, so stay tuned for full coverage.

In the meantime, you can check out our running list of merchants and apps that accept Apple Pay here including the recently added Best Buy app with support coming to stores later this year. Apple Pay works with select Visa, MasterCard, and American Express cards from the banks listed above with Discover support coming later this year. The service is available on the iPhone 5 and up, iPad mini 3 and iPad Air 2 for use in apps, and Apple Watch.

Come on Discover. I know you can get with the program.

Simple Bank just added support this past weekend too.

    • Zac Hall - 9 years ago

Yep their parent bank was included last month and Simple started working then. They started promoting it for everyone over the weekend.

      • duepeak07 - 9 years ago

I didn’t even notice the parent bank added it last month!

its about time this was rolled out to more countries around the world!.. Stop teasing us all!… We need Pay in the UK!!

    • Jim Hassinger - 9 years ago

Until there’s a single world banking authority — not likely — each bank and country has to be exhaustively negotiated with according to local regulations.

The big game changer I think will be when “store credit cards” are added. No longer having to carry around my Old Navy, Target, JCPenney, Kohls, Best Buy, etc.cards in my wallet will be huge.

Of course I don’t always have to carry them with me, and they can be looked up in the store, but the convenience of just having it on my phone will be great.

    • Jonathan Smyth - 9 years ago

That’s a non-issue for the vast majority of users. All those stores already accept MasterCard/Visa.

    • Wow, you get separate store-branded credit cards at every store you shop at? WHY??

Since most of those don’t actually run through a payment network, like Visa or MasterCard, but rather connect straight to the store’s financial system, I doubt they will get added to Apple Pay / Android Pay anytime soon.

Still no GoBank!! (Green Dot Bank)

  6. Chris Cooper - 9 years ago

Apple & Ally Bank must be feuding or something… Doesn’t make sense that the largest online bank wouldn’t already be added to Apple Pay

    • If you’re interested in an all-online, free checking, free ATM use bank with really good service, try Charles Schwab Bank.

Free checking, Visa debit card, great mobile-check deposit iOS app with TouchID login, works in Apple Pay, you can withdraw cash at ANY ATM anywhere in the world for absolutely free (and they even refund you the fee charged by the ATM operator), no international transaction or currency conversion fees, 24/7 phone support… excellent all-around.

Very similar to Ally in most respects, but they adopt new Apple services like TouchID and Apple Pay more quickly than Ally.

  7. Still no Bank of the West. I can’t believe this.

    And First Entertainment Credit Union!

I wish they’d do more to get chains and companies to actually let you use it. Basically nowhere I go will accept it, and this is a large city with large tech community. Frustrating. I mean there /are/ places that take it, just no place I go, unfortunately. I wish Apple was doing more to help that along.

    • A lot of smaller / medium businesses don’t have contactless payment terminals, and those that do are usually larger chains which are more likely to hold up the likes of Apple for a cut of the profit, or be interested in cheaper (but shortsighted) payment services like CurrentC. Businesses can also be locked into contracts with older card processing equipment that it will take a few years to renew.

But if you do see any card terminal that has a wireless logo on it, go ahead and try Apple Pay. A lot of places actually “take” Apple Pay without being aware that they do, just because they are using a newer NFC-enabled card terminal.

It may start getting better later this year, when the “liability shift” happens with credit card payment processors – basically the deadline for merchants to start accepting EMV chip cards or face the consequence of being held liable for fraudulent mag-stripe transactions. That will spur a lot of businesses to upgrade their card processing equipment, and a lot of that equipment will be NFC / Apple Pay capable as well.

Looks like I’m on Apple pay then, but I still don’t get it, where does the cash come out?

  11. Sterling Miller - 9 years ago

I couldn’t give two craps about the banks they have added. ADD MORE STORES TO USE IT AT!!!!!!!!
