iPad Pro to feature 2732×2048 resolution according to iOS 9 code

iPad-multitasking

Earlier today, a keyboard with much better support for the supposed iPad Pro, a device that has been rumored for some time now, was shown off thanks to the iOS 9 code. Steve Troughton Smith and Hiraku Wang now suggest that the iPad Pro will feature a resolution of 2732×2048, which at 12.9-inches, comes out to 263 pixels-per-inch.

The current iPad Air 2 features a resolution of 2048×1536 at 9.7-inches. This means that the iPad Pro will nearly have the width resolution of two 9.7-inch iPads running next to each other. With iOS 9, Apple introduced a new Split-Screen and Slide-Over functionality that will greatly benefit from the increased size and resolution of an iPad Pro. Theoretically, users of the iPad Pro could run nearly two full-size iPad apps side-by-side.

With 2048×1536 resolution, current iPad apps could also run on the iPad Pro scaled up 2x, similar to how iPhone apps are run on the iPhone. Although, Apple will obviously encourage developers to build with the new 2048×1536 resolution in mind, in addition to the current iPad resolution.

The leaked keyboard shown earlier today features the ability to readjust itself at higher resolutions with a new row of symbols and characters.

Apple is expected to announce the iPad Pro later this fall and likely targeted at business and education markets. The device is rumored to have compatibility with keyboards and support for USB devices, perhaps in the form of USB-C. Apple is expected to make a variety of optimizations to iOS for the iPad Pro, including the possible addition of support for multiple users. Another rumored feature of the device is a set of stereo speakers, as opposed to the mono setup found on the current iPads.

They better clean up their lineup. If you go on the website now, you see iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad Mini 3, iPad Mini 2, iPad Mini. Then they want to add an iPad Pro. Like it’s going to blow up again till Jobs came into Apple and clean the whole concern up and kept it simple.

What Apple’s lineup should be in my honest opinion:

      tablets:
-iPad mini –(only 1 model) 2GB RAM
-iPad –(only 1 model) 4GB RAM
-iPad Pro — (only 1 model) and please give this 8gb RAM.

      portables:
      -MacBook (new 12 inch)
      -Macbook Pro 13 and 15
      * remove the Air when Apple can get the 12 inch down to 999$ *

Desktop: keep it like it is

Phone: keep it like it is *remove the 5C cause it is basically the 2012 iPhone 5 in a plastic shell*

Yes, giving people different options for size and price points is just plain stupid.

      • SKR Imaging - 9 years ago

when you see 3 iPad minis with sometimes 50$ difference, it makes no sense to have all those SKU options.. Just sell the latest one on main site and if you want, make a seperate page on your site for the models you need to liquidate.. Something like the refurb store on Apple website..

      • ditch the MBAir for the new MB? no thank you. have you ever tried this new butterfly keyboard? imho: it’s nonsense… give the Air a retina display, and maybe shrink the bezels and let the rest be untouched. for this laptop you could charge 1300$

How about following the iMac naming schema, and just rename the entire line-up by its release year (and “early”, “mid” or “late”where necessary)?

      iPad Pro
      – 2015

      iPad
      – 2014 (do away w/iPad Air 2)
      – 2013 Late (do away w/Pad Air)
      – 2013 Early (do away w/iPad 4)
      – 2012 (do away w/iPad 3)

      iPad Mini
      – 2014 (do away w/iPad Mini 3)
      – 2013 (do away w/iPad Mini 2)
      – 2012 (do away w/iPad Mini 1)

      et cetra, et cetera.

      • Dan Eaton - 9 years ago

That doesn’t really work as it will make many of their devices be perceived as being older and outdated once Jan 1st hits – even though many were released only some 2-3 months prior.

    • Tuvatech - 9 years ago

Couldn’t agree more! Too many products and the names are getting confusing too. Like what’s with the iPad Air? Why couldn’t they just keep the name iPad. It seems that they are trying to put commercials into their product names, which is stupid. You know, a while back we had ”The new iPad” and now we have the MacBook Retina. It’s stupid!

They should really simplify their lineup. Has anyone counted the number of different iPads they are actually selling? I mean they have the iPad Air 2, Air, Mini 3, Mini 2 and Mini. But they all come in different configurations. We have the Wifi model and Wifi+Cellural one. They have several storage options. Different colors. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have over 50-60 different iPads in their warehouses. How stupid is that? Keep it simple, Apple!

There is no need for all those different generations of devices. Once the newer model comes out, that’s it. Okay, if you want to sell the previous model in China or India or something. That’s fine. But why are you selling the iPad mini 1 in the US?

Because if they keep selling those old products, they will be forced to make sure that the latest iOS runs on all those devices. Didn’t they say that the iOS 9 will run on all the same devices as iOS 8 does? It means that the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 will get iOS 9. Are they serious? When iPad 2 came out, Steve Jobs was still alive. The device is over 4 years old and they are still trying to put the iOS 9 on it? How much are they sacrificing to do that? How much better it could be when it was only meant for the latest devices? Like maybe iPad Air, iPhone 5S and upwards or something. Take a look at this chart (graphics performance) and see where is iPad 2. It’s just bullcrap.

I disagree with not supporting older devices.. If the code is optimized enough, it could run well on a ipad 2 and iPhone 4s.. not everyone can afford changing a perfectly functional device every 2 years.. Kudos to Apple for supporting these devices and owners..

This way, many can take advantage of all the latest security updates and app support. This was a readon why I ain’t thinking about moving to android anytime soon..

How about you buy the product you want and let the rest of us buy the product that pleases us.

      • Dimitri Kyriakis - 9 years ago

He is entitled to his opinion & expressing how it truly is. It seems more & more you can’t express your opinions on here.

      • Gregory Wright - 9 years ago

Yes Dimitri and I think Apple knows what they are doing. They have the expertise to figure it all out.

      • Leif Paul Ashley - 9 years ago

Or better yet, why don’t the vast majority of you look at the first thing Steve Jobs did when the company was in a death Spiral:

        – Kill all products except 4.

Apple is a bit off course, but their products are so good it won’t matter short term. Having the MacAir, iPad Mini, and other old junk is… junk.

    — “Another rumored feature of the device is a set of stereo speakers, as opposed to the mono setup found on the current iPads.”

Not all iPads. The iPad Air 2 has stereo speakers. Albeit there’s not much separation, but it does have 2 and they do sound stereo-isn. Kinda.

I do wonder how Apple is going to differentiate this from the 12″ MacBook, in terms of target groups (i.e. marketing-wise).

Isn’t this why they got the MacBook out in the first place? Thin and light enough to carry like an iPad, a bit on the light side (pun intended) in terms of CPU and expansion to be considered a “work” laptop. The main difference is going to be that the MacBook will run a full desktop OS with proper file management etc.

It’s gonna be very interesting to see iOS reach business productivity levels. Split screen and iCloud Drive (file manager) are going to be a big step in that direction. If they could also allow iWork apps to load files from other apps without moving them into their own sandbox (e.g. edit a Pages document from Google Drive without copying the file to iCloud/Pages first), we’d be 90% there, probably.

    • triankar - 9 years ago

Actually, I won’t be surprised if the “iPad Pro” outperforms the MacBook in terms of CPU performance. That’s gonna be a mind bender for some…

  5. One pixel off from 4:3? Would 2732×2049 not make more sense?

    • guiltyapplefanboy - 9 years ago

I don’t think one pixel makes that much of a difference (you can just crop it if you have 4:3 content). Plus, I think for pixel doubled @2x retina screens, it’s simpler to chose both numbers to be even. Here 2048 happens to be a a power of 2, and the double of 1024 (which happens to be the height of the iPad).

    • Leif Paul Ashley - 9 years ago

It makes the graphics scaling for developers easier. It’s 99.9% 4:3 :)

If they make a “pro” version of the iPad, it would definitely be my next purchase.

  9. Bob Miller - 9 years ago

As a musician using an iPad for my sheet music, a 12″ screen would prove invaluable. Some sort of USB connectivity would be icing on the cake.

  10. Leif Paul Ashley - 9 years ago

I said this about the iPad Mini and say it here too… this is dumb. I really don’t see the viability for this product except in a very few select senarios like graphics artists and musicians where the benefit is kinda minimal.

Apple’s never been a niche player, it’s always focused on devices for the masses. I hope this isn’t a future trend.

  11. I agree with Iven Tenz, they better to clean up their products line. I was an iPad fan for many years. Definitely, I still stay an iPad fan. But in my studying process I should use Windows, and even Windows Desktop. But I always install a visual theme that resembles MacBook. When I am on Windows I long to Apple. So I play 2048 Game Girls Choice For Windows Desktop (from windows-2048.com, win-2048.org) because its design is reminiscent to iPad and MacBook design.

There is a great big ad in the middle of this article showing a ‘doll’ in a BDSM outfit face down… and you wonder why we use ad-blockers

Longtime Apple fanboy here, but gravely concerned about the company’s current path. I found WWDC 2015 to be utterly and completely uninspiring. No new hardware at all. We are long overdue for a mid range iMac refresh, not to mention an iPad Pro and Apple TV. Apple has always been about innovation, creativity, new products and technologies that change us. WWDC had none that. El Capitan, after a year in development, offered nothing but some small tweaks. Even Craig F had a hard time generating excitement during his presentation. Why is Siri not yet integrated into OS X? How can Microsoft have introduced Cortana years after Siri and leapfrogged it? Really disappointing. iOS9 offered a little more, but in reality, just played catchup with what Android and Windows have had for years. Sadly, the most innovative and interesting thing I saw was the new two finger UI on the iPad for cursor control. Apple you need to being to think about merging iOS and OS X now. Your incremental baby steps seem hesitant and unsure and you will fall behind in two categories you invented. Windows, although its been a painful road for them, is already there. The Surface Pro 3 is the first product I have seen that can truly replace a laptop. It’s an awesome product Apple. Together with Windows 10, it’s the most viable option for the corporate world. Here’s a challenge Apple, let’s see you surpass it, not in a small way, but in some major, incremental way. Don’t demonstrate a continued lack of innovation and inspiration by introducing an iPad Pro which is just “bigger.” Redesign and get rid of the bloated bezels. And how about true multi-tasking, USB ports, peripharal device management, 2k or 4k display, innovative keyboard design or even something simple like holding the shift key swaps the top line between numbers and symbols, kick stand, better cameras, force touch across the entire screen and deeply integrated into the OS, integrated file/folder management, built in remote access/control of Macs, Hey Siri always on… I could go on forever. iPhone and iPad are both ready for a major redesign. Innovate, innovate, innovate. You have nearly unlimited financial resources to acquire, develop, and hire the best minds and technology available. With Steve Jobs gone, you need to look outside as well as within.
