When Apple Pay goes live in the UK next month, each major bank in the country will be supported aside from Barclays, which has its own mobile payment solution and says talks are ongoing with Apple.

At launch in July, first direct, HSBC, NatWest, Nationwide Building Society, Royal Bank of Scotland, Santander and Ulster Bank will be active followed by the addition of Bank of Scotland, Coutts, Halifax, Lloyds Bank, MBNA, M&S Bank and TSB Bank in the fall.

Back across the pond, Apple announced several updates around Apple Pay last week at WWDC, its developer conference. Starting this fall with iOS 9, Passbook, the app where Apple Pay lives on iPhones and Apple Watches, will be rebranded as Wallet. Apple will also add support for both store branded cards including those from BJ’s and JCPenney as well as Apple Pay-based loyalty cards for merchants like Walgreens and Whole Foods as we reported.

irony, Apple Federal Credit Union not listed (what?!?!). Not affiliated with Apple Inc but a great credit union that has branches in High Schools to teach students how banking works. Students actually operate the branch in the high school and students open accounts and learn finance with Apple Federal Credit Union accounts as the class example.

talk about one that Apple should really get engaged. Schools, students, Apple in the name. ;-)

I don’t know if the list was updated after you posted, but the Apple Federal Credit Union IS listed.

Apple needs to start getting more retail stores to enable apple pay. What good is signing up every bank if most stores don’t accept apple pay?

    • OneOkami (@OneOkami) - 9 years ago

Banks have a bit more incentive to proactively adopt this because the added security reduces the risk of fraud. Retailers generally have to a make a major investment in upgrading all their locations with NFC terminals and training their staff accordingly. That comes with no guarantee that a large portion of their customer base will actually use it.

And there is good in bringing banks of aboard even if retail stores drag their feet because the technology can still be (and is) supported in mobile apps, vending machines, sports venues, etc.

Just received confirmation that First Citizens Bank (First Citizens BancShares) is testing Apple Pay and is hoping to have it to customers soon. (I’m hoping that means by the end of the year, but with them that could mean in the next couple years. It took them until 2013 to get a mobile banking app.)

The problem that I observed with apple pay is people don’t know where it is and is not accepted. If I m not wrong TC mentioned you can use it at thousands of nfc terminals. I was at a sporting goods store yesterday and asked if they accepted apple pay, many employees didn’t know and I Was told no. Same case at radio shack though I could see the apple pay logo I was told no. This means that I have been going to the stores where it will work but being losing the opportunity to use it. When I finally used it in the sporting good store I was surprised how smooth it was.

Funny thing at radio shack today, this time I decided to pay with apple pay but the terminal wasn’t taking contact less payment, even when there was a logo.
Also tried Home Depot today, didn’t work. I read on Uwajimaya website that they accept apple pay.

Our local Trader Joe’s finally started accepting ApplePay. I love it!
BTW, didn’t they say Discover Card was supposed to join soon? Does anyone know when that might be?

Retail awareness and availability is dismal. Even the stores that support Apple Pay have no clue what it is. The 70 year old bat behind the counter at Walgreens looks at you like you’re committing fraud because you aren’t swiping a card.
And god forbid it doesn’t work the first time. Its a huge embarrassment, as everyone else in line including the clerk will immediately start to get impatient, as they have no idea what you’re doing. It is going to be years, YEARS, before ApplePay is anything but a whisper.

I’m getting a little bit disenfranchised. It seems that all the cool features of iOS for the last few years and some that are coming seem to just skip Canada all together. We still don’t have Apple Radio, or whatever it’s called. And the new version isn’t on our horizon either. We never got Apple Pay. No mention of it either. This new Apple News feature…..again, not for us.

FINALLY my main bank is added. My life is complete.
