Apple releases iOS 8.4 with Apple Music, Beats 1, and all-new Music app

As promised, Apple has just released the iOS 8.4 software update featuring an all-new Music app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to the public after testing with developers since mid-April. While it includes smaller changes throughout, the update primarily delivers an overhauled Music app with Apple Music (notice the new icon), its brand new subscription music streaming service, and Beats 1, its 24/7 live radio station that launches today.

Other changes include audiobook playback moving to the built-in iBooks app with support for CarPlay while textbooks created using iBooks Author will now be available on the iPhone.

In addition to the Apple Music service, non-subscribers will still notice a redesigned Music app an Up Next feature for managing current music playback and access to Apple’s Beats 1 streaming radio station. With Apple Music, iOS 8.4 includes artist activity and access to a streaming music catalog built-in to the Music app.

Beats Music subscribers can migrate their music libraries to Apple Music using the latest software version on iOS while Spotify and Rdio subscribers can try this unofficial workaround to migrate playlists.

Apple Music is available for free for three months in over 100 countries. United States pricing starts at $9.99/month for individual users then goes to $14.99/month for group plans through Family Sharing that include up to six users.

The update also includes a fix for the infamous ‘effective power’ iMessage bug discovered last month.

The iOS 8.4 release is available as an OTA software update within the Settings app on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, or through iTunes for devices with limited storage availability.

This update introduces Apple Music—a revolutionary music service, 24/7 global radio, and a way for fans to connect with their favorite artists—all included in the redesigned Music app. iOS 8.4 also includes improvements for iBooks and bug fixes.

    • Jordan Krahn (@jkrahn) - 9 years ago

It seems like Beats 1 is suddenly working on iOS 9 beta 2 – so not sure if they won’t need a new beta for it to work? Wasn’t working until about an hour ago for me.

      • stickyicky97 - 9 years ago

Beats 1 is on iOS 9 beta 2 and active, but Apple Music and the new iTunes icon aren’t.

      • Patrick (@PatrickPoech) - 9 years ago

Is Beats 1 only available in specific countries? Cause here in Austria (running iOS9 Beta 2) it does not work.

A LOT of people are having problems connecting to the iCloud music library, including me. It says “iCloud Music Library can’t be enabled.” Several people say that it has taken several tries to get it to remain on.

The only bug I’ve found is that when reduce motion is turned on, going back to the homescreen (with home button or multitouch gesture) icons don’t show up immediately.

However, the new Music app has major lag.

      • mariobros27772 - 9 years ago

I got it. Instead of restarting my phone, I shut it off for a bit. Then when I turned on and tried again, the download started.

      • GadgetBen - 9 years ago

Tried that still stuck in update requested

      • GadgetBen - 9 years ago

2 hours later and update still is stuck, tried turning phone off and leaving, its 100% charged on charger, reset. Nothing. Current software Public Beta 8.4

    • mariobros27772 - 9 years ago

Same here. My iPhone 6 is stuck on this. Closed out the app and restarted my phone with no luck. I was on the 8.4 beta as well.

      • GadgetBen - 9 years ago

Can someone report this to 9to5 to see if this is a bug?

    • kjl3000 - 9 years ago

Ok, got it… Delete profile, restart and update! Thanx AppleDavid over at Macrumors! :)

      • Kevin Noah - 9 years ago

Thx for that tip. I was waiting now for 3 1/2h.

    • Delete your Apple Developer Profile Under Settings->General->Profiles then reboot your phone and go back into Software Update. Worked for me.

If you are on iOS 9 beta, are you unable to get the new music app?

    • stickyicky97 - 9 years ago

I’m in the same boat. I have Beats 1, but no Apple Music. I assume they will push out a new beta today to address this. At least they better.

  33. baf2099 - 9 years ago

Updated my iPhone 6 OTA, attempted to set up Apple Music but getting this error “iCloud Music Library Can’t be enabled. You can enable it later from Music in Settings. Until then, your music won’t be available on your other devices.” Anyone else with this issue?? How to Fix???

  34. it will support to 4s ?

How to turn on explicit lyrics in Apple Music in iOS 8.4?

  37. AirDJ31 - 9 years ago

Welp. Yet another update where it didn’t fix the bug in my music app where songs where showing improper song tagging and missing album covers. However, some people in this thread who’ve had the same problem said the update fixed it for them (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6877056?start=0&tstart=0). I have no clue how this could be fixed now.

  38. anthonyharris7 - 9 years ago

Anybody know if the new music app prevents “infinite scroll” in the artist album view? Scrolling through every song of every album is annoying especially when said artist has many albums. Thanks

  39. jupuddles - 9 years ago

The new music app won’t show music that is stored locally on my iPhone. I have pressed the button for offline play too, but still it will not show up. Now if I connect it to iTunes it just says that all of the information is other

  41. jdropp - 9 years ago

Why is it so difficult to shuffle ‘My Music’ now?

  42. Pedro Pontes - 9 years ago

I have a relatively large music library on itunes, that i’ve been using for about 8 years on my windows pcs. a lot of my music is in apple lossless, so i can play them on my iphone. i had about 18gb of lossless songs on it (it’s a 32gb 5s). until today, when i installed 8.4 and activated apple music. first of all, to enable the “save for offline” feature to the service, i had to activate the “icloud music library” on settings, which, as some people said here, was resulting in an error. but then i finally was able to activate it, merging my songs instead of replacing them (i wouldn’t want my alac files to be switched to 256kbps aac, right?). so i started downloading some songs from an indie band i like and can’t find their albums on cd-quality files anywhere, i only had one of their cds, which was on my iphone. so, adding the other albums to “my music” and then making them available offline is when it started to get really weird. first, some songs would download and others wouldn’t. then, those downloaded songs would just disappear and some others would appear. then, the songs from the album that i previously had, which had different versions in one of the other albums, with different arrengements etc, would simply not download at all because aparently, since i already had them, i wouldn’t need another copy, even if the song was actually different. and then, out of the blue, a lot of my local music started appearing with messed up artwork, from other albums from the same artist or even from different artist, and let me tell you something, i always have my album arts right, and they all were completely ok 2 hours ago when i still was on 8.3. so ok, i connected the phone to my pc to delete those songs with f*cked up artwork and transfer them again. except itunes wouldn’t let me. so i disabled the “manually manage songs” option and waited for all the songs to be deleted. and they weren’t. so i tried to transfer some new songs, just for some peace of mind. and then the cherry on top appeared. i couldn’t transfer my songs to my phone because “itunes match is activated”. yeah, i’d have to turn off the icloud music library on my phone, which lasted ages for me to even be able to activate, to transfer my lossless longs to it, then losing the ability to download the songs from the streaming service for offline listening. so, yeah, i’m pretty mad at apple right now.

  43. Duncan Calder - 9 years ago

you can have an option of “Shuffle all songs” anymore!! I don’t like that, but i like the up next thing even though i can’t figure it out

    • bungobaggins - 9 years ago

I don’t care much about Apple Music, but I was waiting for them to add Up Next. I have been using Up Next ever since it came out in iTunes 11.

As for Shuffle All Songs, you now need to tap on any song to begin, given that you are in the Songs view and Shuffle is turned on.

  44. Andrew Hoyt - 9 years ago

Bugs: 1) Took ~20 tries to get iCloud enabled. It did finally work.
    2) Adding music to My Music (for offline listening) has only worked once (about 20 tries). Usually get the “Done” message, but the music does not show up in My Music

  45. Well I just downloaded the software update and have lost all my music that I had on Beats….needless to say I’m pissed

  46. ruslev (@ruslev) - 9 years ago

my iphone 4s beats app doesnt recoginize newly installed ios 8.4 and will not allow migration to apple music

  47. Norm Fan - 9 years ago

Uh, where’d the “shared” button so I can connect to my iTunes library at home…?

  48. Is there a limit of time to when we start using the 3 month trial? For example, imagine I start the trial in September, will I get Apple Music for free until December?

  49. Graham Ferguson - 9 years ago

So where is the new music piece in OSX and Windows. Running 10.10.4 in OSX and don’t see anything in iTunes and running iTunes 12.1.2 in Windows (latest version)?

    • Graham Ferguson - 9 years ago

OK ignore the OSX piece (computer hadn’t restarted correctly) but can’t seem to update Windows to get the new functionality

  50. Graham Ferguson - 9 years ago

Can anyone get Apple Music in iTunes in either OSX or Windows. Won’t work for me on either but fine on my iphone and ipad…really frustrating

  51. Jake Becker - 9 years ago

I like, but I’m a little dumbfounded that there is no available “shuffle all” button in Music. Sure, Siri will do it, but they couldn’t have thrown that in…? Or is it hidden somewhere…

  52. Adding a song to a playlists works 50% of the time.
The UI is confusing: For example there’s inconsistent indications as to whether I have a song downloaded or not.
I’m following hundreds of people I have no care for.
Avril Lavigne won’t leave me alone.
How do I modify my favourite genres/artists after the initial ‘For You’ setup?
“x song cannot be downloaded as it was not purchased with this Apple ID” I’m subscribed to Apple Music, I thought the point was that I don’t need to buy it?
I can add a playlist to itself? Why? Why would I or anyone ever want to do this? Doing so accidentally results in duplicate songs in a playlist which have to be individually removed. Surely it should automatically merge out duplicates?
So you can minimise the ‘player’ portion of the app when a song is playing and you can browse the rest of the app. But you cannot remove the bar along the bottom entirely if you’re not listening any more.
There are STILL problems when playback is interrupted by other apps – YouTube for example. Listen to a song, then load YouTube and start a video. The song stops playing but is also removed from the Control Centre so you can’t restart it quickly; you have to restart the music app and play it from there.

My music and videos were all on my iPad (via iTunes sync) prior to updating to iOS 8.4 today. Now they are gone except for those that were purchased through iTunes.. Did the update delete my music and videos?

    • Rhonda Smith - 9 years ago

I’m having the exact same problem. I found if I turn off iCloud music library they are all back. Only issue with it off you can’t store any songs from Apple music locally. Hoping for a fix soon

  56. kacperro97 - 9 years ago

I can’t pull this menu with flashlight toggle and changing songs. Am I the only one?

  57. Jamie Lunn - 9 years ago

Has anyone else had the issue where once you sign in to use Apple Music it completely takes over your locally synced music and changes artwork etc. This is a massive deal breaker for me as it doesn’t even get the artwork right half the time if you have a rare album or a album it doesn’t know. Particularly bad for compilations!

    • Jamie Lunn - 9 years ago

Also, as a few people have posted. If you use offline music there is quite a bit if lag there… Unusable actually.

    • Rhonda Smith - 9 years ago

I’m having the exact same problem. I found if I turn off iCloud music library they are all back. Only issue with it off you can’t store any songs from Apple music locally

    • Miłosz Michałowski - 9 years ago

Unfortunately it happened to me. At first, some of the album cover went missing. Then every album is coverless… So annoying and not the first time that iOS messes that up.

  58. Don Carroll - 9 years ago

apple music on my iphone6plus has no “artist” tab at the bottom…just “mymusic” in the bottom right corner. If you are searching down the “songs” list, you must scroll all the way back up to the top, to change the sorting to “Artist”…really?? Also, it doesn’t find any artist that I bought in a compilation album…I bought 2 Scorpions songs form the iTunes Millennium Masters Album….Apple music won’t list
The Scorpions as an artist anymore…I have to physically type the words Scorpions in the search box and it comes up from somewhere..? This is the worst update known to mankind…

It’s not letting me update. Ugh! Keeps on saying error!

  64. Eric (@illstr8r) - 9 years ago

My issues since I’ve upgraded to 8.4?
    • Battery drain on my 6+ is the worst I’ve seen since my 4S. Typically can get through a day and never dip below 65%… the day isn’t over and I am sitting on 35% and haven’t used my phone for anything but checking twitter and mail today.
    • Siri isn’t working at all
    • Voice dictation is also not working (toed to Siri problem?)

Not too thrilled with this update at the moment.

  65. Tobias Horbrügger - 9 years ago

all my playlists are gone and i can’t figure out how to synch my playlists from itunes to my iphone. Anyone else struggling with this bug?

    • markyslash - 9 years ago

I had same issue. Tried logging out and in again but didn’t fix it. Turned out that Apple Music had automatically logged me in with my Apple ID rather than my iTunes ID, so logged in again with iTunes ID and it fixed it (after a few minutes). Whole thing is still a PITA though – so needlessly complex, buggy and confusing. And bizarrely, it seems you can’t actually directly buy a song that you hear on Beats – how crap is that? Bet the artists are loving that ‘feature’!

  66. I updated I5c but its restarting again amd again…. any solution for this

  67. Coswald - 9 years ago

    Bugs so far:
-iTunes dropping songs from my playlists
-can’t edit a playlist. When I try it either doesn’t take it it rearranges songs in a random order
randomly -turns on Shuffle and 1-Song Repeat

  68. Rene Hart (@mystic4pt6) - 9 years ago

I am NOT HAPPY with the iOS 8.4 updates. Is there a way to revert back to the previous version? Why can I not shuffle my library with one click? Can’t wait to see what other treasures there are to discover. This is going to suck.

  69. Irene Turner - 9 years ago

So, cool looking new icon etc…but my music keeps repeating the same song over and over, even when pressing shuffle on my playlist. What’s with that? I tried syncing again to my computer. Still, when I go to a favorite playlist and hit shuffle one song plays over and over and I don’t know where to go to change it? Any ideas? It’s annoying

  75. Melinda Dean Reed - 9 years ago

Some of my music will no longer play after I updated. On my playlists it plays the same song over and over and will no longer shuffle unless I hit the shuffle icon after each song, am I doing something wrong? I am totally frustrated.

    • Pamela Adler - 9 years ago

agreed….what happened to my ability to shuffle all my songs! I am not liking this change at all! Please advise how to shuffle all?

    • Cami Ivers - 9 years ago

When you want to shuffle your music you need to go to any song hit play then its at the bottom of the screen there are symbols for shuffle and repeat. Press the symbol on the left and it will shuffle the songs on your play list

      • Cami Ivers - 9 years ago

When the song plays on the bottom of the screen you need to press the song playing to open it up to make it fit the screen, then hit the bottom left shuffle icon. Sorry I forgot to put that on my first reply

  76. John M. Haynes - 9 years ago

this is an insanely idiotic update. Yes, the apple music features are great – if you want streaming music. I bought a 64gb iphone just to carry MY music… and not have to waste my limited data to play it. Whisky Tango Foxtrot, Apple.

Navigating playlists became a pain in the a$$. If I start a song and want to re-start it or move to a different part… nope, can’t do that anymore. Not even from the lock screen. This is ALMOST enough to make me want to go back to android. one of the big reasons I switched was because the music player and iTunes combo were so easy to use and intuitive. this is crap, Apple. More proof that without Jobs, you are lost and clueless.

  77. Jenn Soto - 9 years ago

I seriously hate the new update! Made it that much more difficult to add or delete music from my phone!

  78. Catherine Marie Finne - 9 years ago

I hate the way this layout looks. Apple music should at least be one section of your music instead of taking over the whole thing. I liked how easy it was to click artists or songs or genres. Now it’s hard to see and I can’t edit the way it looks. Im never going to use the “for you”, “new”, “radio”, or “connect”, so why can’t I edit it to where I don’t have to see it and only see artists, songs, and playlists. Very disappointed. Wish I never updated my phone.

  79. adelesamantha2015 - 9 years ago

Thanks for the article! Netflix app, Hulu, or BBC is great on iPhone. If live outside USA, you can use tools like UnoTelly to get Netflix app, Hulu, or BBC on your iPhone.

  80. Aleah (@awiiakid320) - 9 years ago

This new update sucks. i like the old beats and music apps. the new apple music layout is cool and everything but i don’t like the way it runs. and why the heck wont it let me make another beats account on my laptop like it did before.it says registration not availible

  81. Aleah (@awiiakid320) - 9 years ago

I ALSO HATE HOW YOU NEED TO START PLAYING A SONG BEFORE YOU CAN SHUFFLE. THIS NEW UPDATE IS AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!

  85. Jake Ohlde - 9 years ago

Not a fan of the new update. How the heck do you delete songs? I have a handful that I need to just get rid of so I have a little extra space, but how do I go about doing that?

  86. Debbi Duffy (@daduffy) - 9 years ago

This is crazy. Have no idea how to repeat my playlist. Shuffling playlists is confusing and not sure if its really on or off. You need to fix this!

  87. Michael Pov - 9 years ago

The new music app is absolutely terrible.

First, off they try to force you into paying for their music services. Not only is this type of brute force marketing annoying but it’s an assault on the consumer.

Second, they’ve removed a lot of the basic features that we’ve come to expect from our music. For instance it’s virtually impossible to shuffle all music. Also you can no longer view your music in a simple list, but rather everything is organized by artist and album as if I only want to listen to a single album. The only way around this is to manually add things to the up next, but even then it seems you can’t shuffle it beyond that.

Third, they’ve trying to stream line the controls and options. At first that might not sound like a big deal, but it means that as a user you are faced with limited options and no ability to locate features short of a fucking tutorial. Options, people need options…

This new music player blows. I can’t figure it out. Too difficult to find albums.

I liked the older version of the Music app. Simpler, has all of your content only and is easy to use.

I too don’t like this new upgrade. I used to be able to repeat the playlist or if I just wanted to repeat a song, I was able to do that. Now I can’t find where to go to repeat my playlist or song. I went to the apple store to see if they could help me. the young man that helped he didn’t know what to do or where to go. that was not a good look that they didn’t even know what to do. I wish they would put those two features back and I am totally frustrated and very upset about these changes. What does add to up next mean and why would I want to add to a playlist when I already have a playlist. They seriously need to made re-evaluate this upgrade and fix it.

The fast forward or back buttons in my music does not work!
Alsqo I don’t like having to make another list a list to go down the music title in my purchased playlist. Before you just played or did shuffle . Now I’m having to make more list just to play in the order I purchased. Have not checked the other playlist fast forward or back buttons. Please correct that!!!

I want my continuous flow of music in the playlist that I developed in the sequence I want. Now it only plays one song continuously. Even in the same album!! This sucks if all you want is for us to buy more music, NOT FROM APPLE!! FIX MY MUSIC. NOW I CANT DRIVE AND LISTEN TO MY PLAYLIST WITHOUT HAVING TO ADD A SONG ALREADY IN MY PLAYLIST TO YOUR NEXT PLAYLIST !!! STUPID, STUPID, AND STUPID,!

It sucks! I will not do any more update, don’t trust you apple any more! And definitely will not buy any more of your products!

As far as I can tell, the bug that deletes your ibooks in iTunes remains. I have over 1500 books in iBooks. iTunes CONSTANTLY changes the setting on its own from “sync all books” to “sync selected books.” Then it deletes books from the device only to recopy them again (after you have to change the setting back). When you unplug the device and replug it to sync, then iTunes goes through the whole sordid process again. This is a longstanding bug that Apple is outright ignoring.

8.4 update is a cluster-fudge! Navigation, shuffle, view, file location etc it’s another indication that Apple are losing touch with their core customer requirements and are happy to send out these inbred updates that only they love.. major nail in apples coffin but it’s been on the horizon for awhile as they can’t help themselves.. I just like things to work and this doesn’t. Time to look at the alternatives – New Samsung Galaxy 6??

These idiots continue to ruin good products just to sell you something else. First this U2 album gets forced into my library so I have to listen to that crap when I shuffle. The old music player was fine. Now when you shuffle it is only an album, not all your music for the band. Why would I shuffle a single album instead of just listen to it in order? This player is practically unusable. Apple music now officially sucks. I think it’s time to scrap Apple.

I just needed a place to vent and did not even see the other comments. Now that I have, it is clear that nobody is happy with these changes. I do not want to be forced to look at their add-ins the the music app when I will never use them. I only want to see my music. This should be my choice. Like many others, I cannot figure out how to work this thing in a realistic, usable manner. Every update that is supposed to be an improvement, continues to build towards ruining a good product.
Get your head out out your rear Apple. By trying to force products on people to try to increase profits you are going to loose your core. I was an Apple convert from PC after debating with friends for years about paying the premium. Once I did I was very happy. Your current practices are really making me question my choice. I do not know if it is greed or stupidity, but you better wake up Apple.

I’m a freaking designer and I can’t even navigate this shit. I loathe this update. It’s stupid.

  99. Barbara Lange - 9 years ago

I also hate the new update! It was so easy to to hot shuffle and repeat on the old. In response to the answer about just hit the song and you will find shuffle and repeat. It doesn’t work. I get: play next, start a station, create genius playlist etc. SO WHERE DO I FIND SHUFFLE AND REPEAT?

  100. Rick Paul - 9 years ago

Totally agree this new update totally sucks. Where was the usability study on this one Apple!! Must have been either a clueless design team or management stating how it should look. Guess I will move completely to Spotify and make those playlists offline and remove all local music. Love the phone but hate how Apple forces crap down our throats!!

  101. Sheila Johnson - 9 years ago

Completely HATE the new music update!! cant play my music when I am on trips cause I have to keep playing with the app to tell it what to do. It only plays 4-5 songs then quits half way through the song and starts playing my playlist from the first song and ends the shuffle mode. Wish they would go back to the last version of music. I don’t live in an area where streaming is available all the time. anyway I have Spotify when I want to stream music I want!

  102. Neil Reinecker - 9 years ago

Yup…. it’s frustrating, annoying, and a pain in the neck

  103. Neil Reinecker - 9 years ago

Not to mention it erased my playlists…..and the repeat problem “FIX” didn’t work

  104. Allan Shuford - 9 years ago

The new music app is absolutely awful. Instead of just checking and unchecking the songs I want and don’t want, it uploads every single song. Not happy with the direction that the music app OR the iTunes software is taking.

My audiobook player now sucks really bad! First reason is whenever I want to re-start my audiobook it takes about a minute on my iPhone 5 to do so!. I listen to audiobooks when I go for walks or drives and that extra minute is extremely annoying! Second reason is that when you want to skip a chapter or go back a chapter you have to open up the chapter menu and select the new chapter instead of just pressing one button on the main screen like you would on the old music/audiobook player. Third reason is to fast forward through a certain chapter you have to select a little tiny line which at first I couldn’t even see. It’s not like it’s a video so you have to save a ton of the screen for the picture. just use the screen you have to add the additional and necessary controls.

  106. theanimaster - 9 years ago

Apple had a great product and they turned it into a useless piece of shit. All that screen real estate and they can’t give you the control you need over your music. HOW F___ING HARD IS IT APPLE, TO MAKE PLAY/PAUSE/SHUFFLE BUTTONS THE PROPER SIZE???

Quit listening to those losers at BEATS and go back to the old adage: If it ain’t broke, don’t try to F___ING fix it.

  107. Michael Gibbs - 8 years ago

This is so bad, it makes me angry, I can’t play my albums one after another all albums I created to play my favourite songs and I have about 100 of them. Now what I play one song then need to go find another song from the album? What the hell? has anyone ever seen a worse laid out and more unintuitive music player?
