One of the things we all love to hate about Facebook is the way that it thinks it knows better than we do which posts we want to see. Facebook uses unspecified algorithms to assign rankings to posts, boosting the visibility of those it thinks we want to see, and demoting those it thinks will interest us less.
A new iOS Facebook app rolling out later today will for the first time allow us to choose for ourselves whose posts get bumped to the top of our feeds. Three additional features also allow us to control what we do and don’t see further down those feeds …
The headline feature is a screen where you can star those friends whose posts you want to see at the top of your newsfeed, to ensure you never miss their posts.
If there are people whose posts you never want to see but don’t want to risk offending by unfriending them, the app also offers you the option to unfollow them. This is something you can already do on the web by selecting the option from the dropdown at the top right of any of their posts, but most people don’t realize the feature exists.
Conversely, if you’ve already unfollowed people in the past, the app will remind you who they are and offer you the option of giving them a second chance. Finally, it will offer personalized suggestions of new pages you may like to follow (likely based on pages followed by your friends).
The updated app wasn’t in the App Store at the time of writing, but check for it later in the day. Android and web users will have to wait for now, though Facebook says it plans to roll it out to those platforms in the coming weeks.

I’m still using jailbreak tweaks to control all I never have messenger app and I’m not going to
What tweak do you use? can you share with me please?
facebook++
hi
Wish they would also let you set “Most Recent” and let it stick. The app always changes to “Top Stories”…their idea of Top Stories, not mine.
Apple Watch support? Guess not
more control? more like more crap. just show everything in chronological order and be done with it. their filtering is annoying
YES!
Is FB still popular? I know they have someone like a billion accounts, but are those in use? I don’t use FB (though do have 2 accounts) but some acquaintances tell me ‘everyone’ is dumping it, favouring iMessage/WhatsApp (often through a group).
Thoughts?
Yes Facebook is massively still used, twitter is fading away with active users
There is no need to update the app with a new version. Facebook ships an update with new code every two weeks (last one was on July 1st) with a lot of hidden features and A/B tests, then they enable or disable them remotely in their servers for groups of people (or for everyone, in this case)
Can’t we just do a simple chronological?
It’s like beating a dead horse. Users lost trust years ago and they won’t come back.
Where’s the update?
It’s arrived here as a silent update: check the More menu bottom-right, then scroll down to Newsfeed Preferences
Can’t turn newsfeed off. What bummer Facebook
They appear to have gotten rid of “Most Recent” as of 29 September 2015, which is not cool. Choosing whose posts I see first might be nice, but without the option of “Most Recent” none of the news feed display options is of any use to me.
