Untethered iOS 9 jailbreak shown off in new YouTube video

Well-known iOS hacker “iH8snow” published a new YouTube video last night showing off the first untethered jailbreak for the as-of-yet-unreleased iOS 9. The modified iPhone 5 is running the GM build of the software, which will be released to the public on Wednesday.

iH8sn0w says that the jailbreak shown in the video, is “dirty and hacky,” but nonetheless a “proper jailbreak,” which he confirmed also works on the iOS 9.1 beta, though that’s not shown in the video.

Unfortunately for users who may be hoping to get their tweaks up and running on the latest operating system soon, iH8sn0w says he doesn’t have any plans to publish this software. However, since the video proves that it’s possible to create an untethered iOS 9 jailbreak, another developer could build and release one at some point after the release.

Until that happens, however, iPhone owners who want to keep their tweaks should remain back on iOS 8.4. With iOS 9.1 beta introducing new emojis and improved performance, both of which will certainly be a big draw for many users, jailbreak developers may want to hold off on releasing anything until that update is released as well.

You can see iH8sn0w’s video below.

  1. He has no plans of releasing the jailbreak. So what is this, just showing off? Just so he can claim he jailbroke it first? Dont let the world know if youre not sharing it, no one cares.

Meanwhile reports have been released estimating 250,000 jailbroken iPhones have been compromised and user data stolen. And I bet the owners of those phones blame Apple for their troubles too. You get what you deserve.

Those phones were mostly located in China and running a very, very sketchy jailbreak that was released in that country and wasn’t released by members of the main jailbreak community. Folks like MuscleNerd, iH8sn0w, the Pangu guys, and the other big names are the ones to trust. If someone in that circle hasn’t given a jailbreak the green light, it’s best not to mess with them.

Note that those 250,000 Jailbroken iPhones were Chinese phones running Hacked Chinese apps…I think we are safe.

I don’t know whether to be thankful to the jailbreak community for pointing out security holes to Apple, or to be disappointed in Apple for not plugging the security holes in the first place. It is possible you know, no one’s jailbroken the Apple TV 3 yet despite years of trying.

I’m eager to know more about the entire process. With System Integrity Protection in place (aka “Rootless”) on iOS 9, I’m not sure how it’s possible to perform the necessary code injection and system file modifications without modifying the hardware itself in some way. If that’s the case, then it’s still effectively not feasible to jailbreak the device.

Indeed, his description in his YouTube video seems to imply that this exploit does not work on 64-bit devices, which includes the iPhone 5S and newer. The device shown in the video appears to be an iPhone 4S.

Things like “Rootless” are being worked out, have you seen the lighting connector jailbreak? Essentially it uses a “certified” special lighting connector to inject the files so the phone sees it as verified information.
