iPhone 6s poll roundup: Here are the upgrade plans of 9to5Mac readers

We ran three recent polls asking about your upgrade plans for the iPhone 6s/Plus, and now that pre-orders are well underway, we thought it would be interesting to summarize the results.

First, we asked how many of you planned to upgrade to the iPhone 6s/Plus – and the results show it’s not surprising that pre-orders appear on course to set a new record. Among existing iPhone 6 owners, a surprisingly high 38% of you said that you planned to swap out your 1-year-old iPhone for the new model. For owners of older phones, it’s almost three-quarters of you, at 73%.

We then asked about model, storage and color plans …

Interestingly, there was almost an even split between the 4.7-inch 6s and the 5.5-inch 6s Plus, the smaller model just winning out at 51% versus 49%. There was greater consensus on storage capacity and color, most of you planning to buy the 64GB model in Space Gray.

Finally, with carriers now typically separating the cost of the handset from that of the service plan, we asked how you planned to pay for your new handset. Almost half of you opted to bite the bullet and pay the full cost upfront. The rest of you were pretty evenly split between a traditional two-year contract and buying the phone upfront on a monthly instalment plan. Only 6% of you were planning to rent it, returning it next time you upgrade.

It was recently confirmed the iPhone 6s/Plus is getting a RAM upgrade, from 1GB to 2GB, while the new 3D Touch display will make it a little heavier.

If you are planning to pickup your new iPhone in person, we’ve reported on how Apple plans to manage that process on the day. Whether ordering online or in person, you’ll want to be ready to transfer your content from old to new iPhone.

Why not make a poll asking what gender we are? I know there is a stigma or stereotype about “pink” being a “feminine” color but I see that over 3,000 people going for “pink” (rose gold). Is that all (mostly) men? I’m assuming so.

    • I’m a guy, and I had strongly considered Rose Gold when I first saw it during the event. I’ve always had a black, or Space Grey iPhone, and I’d like to change it up. I think I’m leaning more toward the Gold iPhone, but I’ll ask to see both before I purchase one.

I went for Rose Gold. I really like Rose Gold in jewelry and watches, it’s just such an interesting shade.

True, I’d be also be interested in the male portion of Space Grey.

Interesting results. I am one of the few who got the 16 GB 6s. I simply don’t need the extra space bad enough to spend $100.00 extra. I have to wonder how people afford $750.00 or $850.00 for a smart phone. According to the poll, almost half of the buyers here are buying it outright. That’s a lot of credit card debt. I am using AT&T Next 18 again, although I will sell my iPhone 6 on Nextworth for $350.00, and put that money towards the installment loan, lowering my take home price of the 6s to $300.00. That’s much more manageable a number.

It’s not a lot of credit card debt if you have the cash to back it up and can pay it off immediately. Also, you can rack up some decent rewards points.

    • When you go to sell your 16GB phone in a few years, it’s going to be near worthless and you’ll get nothing for it. The other models won’t suffer this problem. Buying the 16GB model to save $100 is actually throwing away many hundreds of $$ in the long run. Total Cost of Ownership.

Well different people have different needs of the storage capacity. For example there’s always 3G storage available in my iPhone 6 Plus with 16G storage capacity totally. You cannot say I’m throwing $$ since more storage means more waste for me.

I understand your argument and I would very much like to agree with you – but as a constant reseller of my old Apple devices, my experience with the reselling market is the larger capacity storages do not get you much more money. In fact the tier 2 and 3 of the larger storage sizes (whether it be iphone or ipad) take the largest depreciation hit in terms of value. I’ve sold previously on craigslist and coworkers: iphone 5, iphone 5s, ipad 2, ipad 3, ipad air, ipad mini.

TLDR: The more total price you spend on an iDevice, the bigger the “loss” when you turn around and sell it used.

That’s true, but the difference in the hit you take isn’t that great. Personally, I buy outright and upgrade on average every two years, and my cost of ownership is around £200 ($300) per year. I don’t consider that an unreasonable cost for a top-tier phone.

If $100 is that much of a hurdle, I’m sure there is a Galaxy 5/6 somewhere to can pick up for free. 😄

      J/K.

Actually, as a bankruptcy lawyer, I commend you for your restraint.

The poll results are always unexpected and interesting.

  4. I’m still rocking the 4S. Anything above the 5S seems too big & inconvenient for me to use. Holding out for the power of the 6 Class in a phone the size of the 5S.

I’m a guy I purchased a 64gb rose gold iPhone 6S for full price came up to 792. I just feel that yes I did pay a lot up front but the phone is mine and my monthly bills will be less than someone leasing their device. 50 a month oppose to 100 plus a month is fine with me. I guess it’s give or take that’s just my preference. Plus I don’t get my credit ran or involved and have my freedom n not locked into a company…I get my device between the 30th n October 6th tho woke up late lol OH ENJOY YOUR NEW IPHONES GUYS
