Apple releases iOS 9.1 for iPhone & iPad with new emoji, fresh wallpapers, more

Apple is out with a new update for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch today, the official iOS 9.1 release. For most users, a collection of new emoji characters including a taco, unicorn, and yes, a middle finger is the most notable new feature within the update. Apple has also tweaked its three planetary wallpapers and developer support for Live Photos as well as improvements to the capture experience.

As for those new emoji characters, you can check out our gallery here from during the beta period last month while you’re downloading the new update.

As for the Messages app, you can now toggle contact photos on or off on iPhone 6 and later. Go to Settings > Messages > Show Contact Photos to change this setting, which is on by default.

As expected, Apple’s News app is now available for use in the UK and Australia.

iOS 9.1 is available through the Software Update of the Settings app. In addition to iOS 9.1, Apple also released OS X El Capitan 10.11.1, watchOS 2.0.1, and tvOS GM.

Updated and it got faster especially in auto rotate and keyboard execution. Some app startup is more responsive.

Done for me from the latest public beta and I believe this end up the program. I do not have any “Profile” in “Settings” anymore.

I have an iphone 6, but I have no option to show contact photos in the Message list. I was running the latest beta of 9.1 but I just installed the public 9.1.

Glad you got it. As a Canadian I was pretty disappointed Apple forgot us in this update. :(

So now, they make the developers focus on EMOJIs? What kind of priorities do they have?

I hope they fix the bug with Safari that I run into EVERY SINGLE DAY on my 6S Plus. I usually open a number of tabs in the background and then go through and read them one by one. When I try to open my first tab, Safari freezes and I need to force close it. Only happens on the first tab opening in the background but it happens every single damn time.
