Apple’s iPad Pro Pencil delays lead scalpers to seek $400 eBay payouts

Ebay-Apple-Pencil

With the accessory in short supply at Apple Stores, the new Apple Pencil stylus for the iPad Pro is listed for as high as $400 on eBay, four times the $99 sticker price through Apple.

Most models of Apple’s new 12.9-inch iPad Pro launched last week are available at Apple Stores and shipping for online orders in 1-7 days, but accessories for the device are harder to find. Despite Apple’s new Smart Keyboard case and Apple Pencil stylus being among the the standout new features alongside the iPad Pro’s larger display, they appear to be in shorter supply with both backordered 4-5 weeks online and hard to find in stores after hardly being available on day one.

The short supply of the accessories frustrated early adopters of the new iPad Pro enough that Apple offered a comment last week, noting that it has “limited supply of Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard” and that it will continue “regular shipments” of the accessories to Apple Stores.

We, however, managed to get our hands on the new Apple Pencil for an unboxing over the weekend, while Ben has been logging his day-to-day experience with the iPad Pro.

If you’re absolutely desperate for an Apple Pencil, can’t wait a month or more for Apple to catch up with demand, and want to pay a little higher than retail price, you can find a handful of listings on eBay here.

  1. Hopefully no one will be stupid enough to feed the scalpers. Let’s give them a lesson, don’t buy from them so they will get stuck with all these Pencils, and struggling to get their money back to the point of selling them below cost.

Or, The Scammers! Someone on eBay is selling the Apple Pencil for $138.00 – As A Pre-Order! You can pre-order from Apple for $99 and wait – or fall for this scammer and pay $39.00 more, while still waiting!

Is there a plan to allow in-store stock lookup anytime soon for the Pencils on the Apple website or app? Or is there a third-party website that is tracking the stock status? (I know I’ve seen this before with iPhones and such).

As much fun as it would be to regularly call Apple stores to see if they received any Pencils, being able to check the website periodically for stock at local stores would be great.

I was fortunate that they had the exact model of iPad Pro I wanted, plus the Logitech Create keyboard. Based on what I had read on-line, I had little hope for the Apple Pencil being available. But I asked anyway and they said to wait just a moment and then there it was.

But then I don’t live in the US.

I have tried the Pencil on a couple of apps and it seems to have no lag. It also feels like a pencil in terms of weight and size. One thing I didn’t expect was that the Notes app also has a straight edge/ruler with dimensions. This will make it easy to do quick drawings.
