Instagram rolling out longer 60-second videos + multi-clip support on iOS

Hot on the heels of Snapchat’s Chat 2.0 announcement, Instagram has officially announced support for sharing longer user created videos. Noting that viewership on Instagram videos has increased by more than 40 percent in the last six months, Instagram today will begin rolling out 60-second length videos to all.

Previously, all users were limited to only sharing 30-second clips with advertising partners having the choice for a full 60-seconds. Today’s new recording length for users follows Instagram’s recent change that shows a video’s views rather than its like count. While a video may have 50,000 views, selecting the view count shows the true number of engagement with that video.

Longer video on Instagram begins rolling out today, and should be available for everyone in the coming months. On iOS, Instagram is also bringing back the ability to make videos using multiple clips from the user’s camera roll. Instagram had also delivered support for multiple accounts back in February.

Make sure to grab Instagram’s latest update for free from the iOS App Store.

Up to now, users were limited to 15 sec videos as far as I know, not 30

  2. In other news, Twitter is announcing the expansion of tweet length to 164 characters, up from the 160 they’ve always supported. A paid tier is being considered that will give you 170 regular characters and two bonus punctuation marks.

Users were limited to 15 seconds, not 30. But I’m glad they brought back the feature to use multiple clip’s from the camera roll. No idea why they took it away, it was a hassle without it.

I had to double check this, because I remember it being 15 as well. One of the multiple accounts I owned was able to do 30-seconds, but that was a business account so maybe something different was occurring there.

  4. That’s great news. I have a weekly video series on my Instagram page and having 60 seconds to work with will be massively helpful. Not a fan of the multiple clip editor they launched today though, as you can only upload in square format when you use it.

Am I the only one who wants to view photos? And by that I mean photos taken with a camera, not collages, graphics, memes, etc.

Don’t do it if you have multiple accounts, it loses the support to either switch accounts or to log out without deleting the app.

This is a bug that Instagram is aware of and currently resolving.

We’ve been building a powerful video editing app for the past 8 months and here’s why we think it’s great for Instagram’s 60 second videos: https://medium.com/@sarperdag/the-best-video-editing-tool-to-make-use-of-instagram-s-new-extended-60-second-videos-update-43929289becf#.aidfomk50

I’m still only able to do 15 seconds of video. I have the most recent version of Instagram. Is there a setting I am missing or does Instagram just hate me? :-)

I’m in the same boat, still only 15-seconds. After reading through the comments from the multi-account support, it looks like Instagram just rolls these features out VERY slowly.

Thanks – they are SLOW. So I guess all users should be “all users but Mike and Greg.”
