Reddit’s long-awaited official iOS app finally here w/ three months of free Reddit Gold

It’s been almost 18 months since Reddit acquired the rights to the popular Alien Blue iOS app, stating then that it would be rebranded as an official client, but Reddit: The Official App finally made it to the U.S. App Store today. However, it is not yet available in all countries.

With the official Reddit app, you can:

  • Browse all of Reddit, wherever you are
  • Search and discover communities by topic or interest
  • Submit your own comments, images, links, and stories for others to view and discuss
  • Customize Reddit with themes (including night theme)
  • View in either compact view or card view
  • Stay up to date with your orangereds with Inbox: messages, comment replies, post replies, and mentions …

The company says that everyone logging into Reddit with the app in its launch week will be given three free months of Reddit Gold. It’s not immediately clear how ‘launch week’ is defined, so we’d suggest doing it today or tomorrow.

The app is a free download on iTunes, joining Reddit’s first official iOS app Ask Me Anything, launched back in 2014. The company has also launched an official Android app.

Wonder how it compares to Narwhal? Also don’t see an iPad/Universal version yet. Fingers crossed.

After Alien Blue started feeling too heavy, and receiving too few updates, I made the jump to Narwhal. Immediately I noticed this new Reddit app has weird tap targets. I miss the swipe gestures Narwhal has. It’s a small feature, but feels like it goes a long way.

Can’t seem to be able to create an account as of now. Keeps on saying “Sorry, please try again later”.

I’m in Canada… any one else having problems?

I have the same problem and I am in Vienna, Austria

It did the same to me. Apparently it didn’t like my password, or username I chose. The username had odd symbols. When I removed them and chose a simpler username, it took and I could then sign up.

It’s not available in the New Zealand App Store. Any reason for that?

Also not available in Switzerland :(

  6. No multireddit support? Bit of a major oversight. I follow such varied reddits, it’s a bit unusable with them all mashed together.
