Apple Maps adds enhanced parking space info, electric charging listings via Parkopedia

Apple Maps is getting enhanced data for parking spots as Parkopedia today announces a deal to provide Apple with its database of parking services worldwide. That means that Apple Maps is now gaining enhanced data for the 40 million parking spots currently tracked by Parkopedia across 75 countries in North America, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Apple Maps previously indicated some parking spots with a simple icon, but those listings will now provide more detailed information about the type of parking facility including number of spaces, accessible spaces, payment options, electric charging availability, height limits, and hours of operation.

On top of being able to see Parkopedia data for parking spots in Apple Maps, users will be able to click through to its website or iOS app to view more info on pricing, user reviews, special offers and real-time space availability.

Parkopedia told us in the future its data in Apple Maps will also show the cheapest available parking lots.

Apple has not yet officially announced the addition of enhanced parking spot listings in Apple Maps, but it previously added Parkopedia to its list of acknowledgements for Apple Maps data providers. Apple currently works with a number of third-party sources to integrate data for points of interest including TripAdvisor, booking.com, Yellow Pages, Yelp, Acxiom, and many others.

While the new parking data is available to current iOS 9 users in addition to iOS 10 beta users, Apple is also adding a new Parked Car feature to Maps in iOS 10 that proactively remembers where you left your vehicle.

Here’s another look at the feature already live for some markets and now rolling out globally:
