Apple’s new iPhone 7 Leather Case now comes with machined aluminum buttons

Apple has updated its iPhone case lineup to match the physical changes needed to fit the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus like a glove. It’s also updated its leather cases with a brand new subtle detail — machined aluminum Sleep and volume buttons.

It’s a small detail, but the presence of aluminum buttons should make a noticeable difference from a tactile perspective. One of my biggest complaints with previous iPhone leather cases was that the buttons were too difficult to press due to the inflexibility of the leather. This updated design should increase the tactility of both the volume buttons and the Sleep button.

Here is Apple’s description of the new leather cases:

These Apple-designed cases fit snugly over the curves of your iPhone without adding bulk. They’re made from specially tanned and finished European leather, so the outside feels soft to the touch and develops a natural patina over time. On the inside, a microfiber lining helps protect your iPhone. And the machined aluminum buttons match the finish of your iPhone case.

As noted, the aluminum buttons also color match the finish of the case itself. So if you have a Storm Gray iPhone 7 Leather Case, you’ll get Storm Gray machined aluminum buttons to match the color of the leather.

Apple’s iPhone 7 Leather Case comes in a variety of colors like Sea Blue, Storm Gray, Tan, Saddle Brown, Midnight Blue, Black, and (Product) Red. The iPhone 7 version sells for $45.00, with the Plus variety selling for $49.00.

Apple also sells silicone cases, although these do not come with aluminum buttons. Apple’s iPhone 7 Silicone Case is more flexible than leather and button response is a lot better on the silicone cases than the old leather cases. Therefore, aluminum buttons aren’t as necessary from an interfacing perspective.
