As we’ve learned through various reader polls over the last week, people really love the new black and Jet Black iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Alongside the new device colors, Apple has also introduced a new black Lightning Dock and YouTuber DetroitBorg has gone hands-on with the accessory ahead of the iPhone 7’s full release later this week.
As noted in the video, the black is a matte black much like that of the black iPhone 7. Sadly, there’s no glossy Jet Black option to go along with the Jet Black iPhone, but the black color option is pretty slick nonetheless.
In terms of design, the black iPhone Lightning Dock is the same as the models introduced last year alongside the iPhone 6s. The bottom of the dock features a rubberized design in order to help secure it to whatever surface on which it is placed. One interesting design detail that I had personally never noticed with the Lightning Docks is that the rubber around the Lightning port itself matches the color of the antenna lines on the iPhone of the same color. For instance, the black Lightning Dock features black rubber padding around the Lightning port, just like the antenna lines on the black iPhone.
Of course this year, the iPhone Lightning Dock may become a bit more popular due to the fact that it features both a Lightning connector and a 3.5mm headphone jack. In fact, Apple’s Phil Schiller recommended the Lightning Dock to a user in response to a question about charging the iPhone and using Lightning headphones at the same time.
The iPhone Lightning dock comes in at $49 in price and is available in silver, gold, rose gold, space gray, and black. For those wondering, the space gray option still exists to complement the space gray iPhone 6s that is still sold.
