Sony releases PlayStation Vue app on Apple TV for live channel streaming

Sony PlayStation Vue Apple TV

Sony’s web TV service PlayStation Vue is now available on the fourth generation Apple TV. Previously, PS Vue customers could authenticate paid video apps with Sony credentials, but access to live channel streaming was limited.

The new app has a fairly sleek interface once you get past the cumbersome authentication process (which requires going to a Sony URL and entering a lengthy numerical passcode).

PlayStation Vue includes access to live TV streaming plus access to on demand content. A Cloud DVR feature also lets you save content to watch later or pause shows during live playback.

PS Vue was already available for iPhone and iPad with a Mac client coming soon. A version on the web is already available for Mac users but requires Flash.

As a web TV service, PS Vue is a compelling buy for cordcutters aside from some restrictions around where you can stream. The new Apple TV app makes activation easier without the need for a PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 that the iPhone and iPad versions required.

If you already have an existing PlayStation Vue account, you can link your subscription to Apple TV and start streaming right away. If you’re new to PlayStation Vue, you can sign up for one of several plan options through the PlayStation Vue website and link your account to Apple TV, without the need of a PlayStation console. Plans start at $29.99, or $39.99 in select cities*, so head over to our website and enter your zip code to see the plans available in your area.

The service did see a major setback recently, however, with channels from Viacom disappearing for subscribers. These include MTV, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon which were reportedly going to increase the cost of the monthly service.

You can download PlayStation Vue on the new Apple TV by searching the App Store.
