How to take a screenshot on iPhone and iPad

Taking a screenshot does exactly what the name suggests, it captures whatever is on your screen in an image and saves it to your Photos app on iOS.

Whether you’re new to iPhone or iPad or just haven’t taken screenshots before, follow along and you’ll be taking them with ease in no time. The images above and below show an iPhone, however, the steps for taking a screenshot on iPhone and iPad are exactly the same.

How to take a screenshot on iPhone and iPad

  1. Navigate to the app or pull up the content you’d like to screenshot
  2. Press both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button (power button) at the same time (you can also take a screenshot by pressing one button immediately after the other)
  3. A screen flash and a camera snapshot sound effect (if sound is on) will confirm a successful screenshot
  4. Navigate to the Photos application to view, use, or share your screenshot.

You’ll find the Sleep/Wake (power) button on the upper right hand side of the iPhone 6/6 Plus, 6s/6s Plus and 7/7 Plus as shown in the image above on the left. For older iPhones, the iPhone SE and iPads you’ll find it on the top right hand corner of your device.

You can find your screenshots a few different ways once you tap on the Photos application. You’ll see them in if you tap on the Photos tab in the bottom left hand corner of the application.

You can also see them by tapping Albums in the bottom right hand corner and then Camera Roll. Or you can also see all of your screenshots organized automatically under Albums → Screenshots.
