Ed Sheeran documentary ‘Songwriter’ to debut exclusively on Apple Music next month

Earlier this year, Apple obtained world rights to the Ed Sheeran documentary “Songwriter.” Now, Sheeran has announced on his Instagram that the film will be available exclusively on Apple Music beginning next month…

Sheeran says that “Songwriter” will be available on Apple Music starting August 28th. The film highlights the songwriting process for Sheeran as he created his third and most recent album, ÷.

While it’s unclear exactly how much Apple paid for the rights to the documentary, a report earlier this year suggested somewhere in the “low to mid seven figures.” Interestingly, that report also said there would be a theatrical component to the film’s release, though we haven’t heard anything about that just yet.

The documentary was originally premiered in Berlin and was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival in April. It was directed by Murray Cummings, who happens to be Ed Sheeran’s cousin. Also making appearances in the documentary are producer Benny Blanco, manager Stuart Camp, singer-songwriter Foy Vance, and more.

“Songwriter” certainly isn’t the first documentary to come to Apple Music. In the past, the company has exclusively released documentaries covering Flume, Clive DavisSam Smith, The Chainsmokers, and more.
