After originally being announced in May, group video and audio calling is now live in the latest versions of WhatsApp for iOS and Android. For iOS users, this feature comes ahead of iOS 12’s release this fall with support for Group FaceTime calls…
WhatsApp announced the availability of group calling fro voice and video in a blog post, touting that users currently spend “over 2 billion minutes on calls per day.”
Group audio and video calling in WhatsApp, however, is more limited that the feature FaceTime will add this fall. Currently, WhatsApp group calling is limited to four people in total, whereas FaceTime group calling will support up to 32 users.
WhatsApp does say that all group calls are end-to-end encrypted. Further, it says the feature was designed to work reliably around the world, including areas where network conditions might not be the best:
You can make a group call with up to four people total – anytime and anywhere. Just start a one-on-one voice or video call and tap the new “add participant” button in the top right corner to add more contacts to the call.
Group calls are always end-to-end encrypted, and we’ve designed calling to work reliably around the world in different network conditions. The feature is currently rolling out on the iPhone and Android versions of our app.
