Apple today officially took the wraps off of its latest iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max. In addition to features such as a larger display, Apple says the iPhone Xs features faster Face ID authentication support.
Details are sparse on how much faster Face ID is on the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max compared to the iPhone X.
Phil Schiller attributed the faster Face ID performance to faster algorithms and a faster secure enclave. The various sensors powering Face ID remain the same: infrared camera, flood illuminator, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, front camera, and dot projector.
Face ID was first introduced with the iPhone X last year and while this upgrade doesn’t seem to be a full-on ‘second-generation’ Face ID, any speed improvements are certainly welcome.
Schiller also noted that contributing heavily to the iPhone Xs performance is a new A12 Bionic chip, the first 7nm mobile processor.
