The new Apple Pencil: squared edge, tap gestures, snaps magnetically onto new iPad Pro

Apple has today announced the second generation of its iPad digital stylus, the new Apple Pencil. The new stylus snaps magnetically on to the side of the new iPad Pro, where it can continously charge.

There’s new integrated tap gestures which can perform functions inside apps, like an eraser in Notes. The new Apple Pencil costs $129. Note that the new Pencil is only compatible with the new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models.

A big problem with the previous generation of iPad Pro was charging. It would always need a top up. The new Apple Pencil and iPad Pro solves that issue with a magnetic attachment where it is also charged.

iOS includes a new dropdown bubble UI to let you know of the Pencil’s charging percentage.

The tap gestures on the Pencil are customizable by third party apps. In Photoshop for iPad, the tap gesture acts a quick shortcut to zoom in and out of the canvas.

The squared edge not only helps with attachment to the iPad Pro, it also makes it easier to rest the iPad on a table — the old cylindrical one would roll all over the place.
