New HomeKit icon appears in Apple trademark filing

Last week, Apple filed a trademark request for an updated HomeKit logo under a Delaware Corporation known as iGuide LLC. The registering representative Stephen Brown has known ties to Apple, as first noted by Conosomac.fr. This particular house-themed logo differs substantially from the logo used on Apple’s HomeKit development pages and within the iOS 9 settings panels. Here’s the current logo for comparison:

Twist debuts as an AirPlay-connected lightbulb and speaker system combo

Yet another smart home accessory is hitting the marketplace, but this one relies on WiFi and AirPlay rather than HomeKit. Twist is a lightbulb accessory that does not require any external power or a hub, rather it works by being installed into your standard lamp or light fixture. Using AirPlay as its wireless technology allows users to stream audio to individual Twist lightbulbs via an iOS device or iTunes on the Mac. We saw a demo of the speaker system, and standalone sound quality was fairly good, but it is unclear how it will be affected when installed in a lamp, ceiling, or wall. The multi-color lighting system can be controlled via an iPhone app or a standalone piece of dimmer hardware. The system will ship next year for $249, including one speaker bulb, two standard Twist light bulbs, and the dimmer control.

Man gets $120 ticket for changing music with his Apple Watch while driving

A driver in Quebec, Canada claims he was fined $120 and given four points on his driving record for changing music on his Apple Watch while driving. While the driver disputes that this is not against the law (at least in Canada), many regions of the United States are not so keen on Apple Watch usage while driving. For example, the following definitions of devices that cannot be used on the road in New York clearly match the Apple Watch: “broadband personal communication device”, “two-way messaging device”, “portable computing device”, “or any other electronic device when used to input, write, send, receive, or read text for present or future communication.” Because the Apple Watch falls under those definitions, usage of the device is likely subject to the same fines as using a cell phone in applicable regions. Unfortunately, a study from March indicated that using a smartwatch behind the wheel can be even more distracting than a smartphone.

Apple seeds Safari 7.1.5 and 6.2.5 betas to developers for Mavericks and Mountain Lion

Apple today has released a pair of Safari betas for earlier version of OS X. Safari 7.1.5 beta for OS X Mavericks and version 6.2.5 beta for OS X Mountain Lion are both available on the Mac Developer Center for registered developers. Safari 8.0.5, which includes the same upgrades as the Mavericks and Mountain Lion versions, is not available as a separate download, but it comes as part of the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 developer and public betas. Here are the focus areas for these Safari betas:

macbook-air-12

Apple news website letemsvetemapplem.eu claims that Apple has a scheduled MacBook Air update for February 24th. The site says that this Air refresh will be minor, so if it is indeed happening, the update will likely focus on processor, storage, and RAM improvements. Of course, this is not the radically new 12-inch MacBook Air with Retina display that we’ve detailed, it’s just a mid-season component refresh. The site agrees with our earlier report that says there is no media event planned for February. Apple has done a few minor MacBook Air updates over the past few years, so this would not be unprecedented

Beats releases exclusive new Jay Z + Beats by Dre Jungle Remix World Cup ad

This ‘Game Before the Game’ commercial is shorter and ‘beats’ the one that Apple CEO Tim Cook said captured the World Cup perfectly. It began airing last night and will only be available on Beats music.

The strategy of Beats releasing music exclusively was a possibility surmised following Apple’ $3 billion purchase of Beats on May 28th which also included Beats co-founder and former Interscope Records Chairman Jimmy Iovine joining Apple. In fact, will.i.am, a Beats co-founder with a stake in the company, said in a recent Billboard interview that he had raised that very possibility a year ago to Iovine.

Tim Cook says Apple has repurchased $14 billion of AAPL, reiterates new categories on the way

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Apple CEO Tim Cook has disclosed that Apple has re-purchased $14 billion worth of the companies own shares over the past two weeks. Following Apple’s record-breaking Q1 earnings results, the company’s stock fell approximately 8%, and Cook says he was “surprised about this.”

“It means that we are betting on Apple. It means that we are really confident on what we are doing and what we plan to do,” said Mr. Cook, speaking in a conference room at the company’s corporate headquarters here. “We’re not just saying that. We’re showing that with our actions.”

Cook told the WSJ that Apple would discuss updates to its controversial buy-back program in the March/April timeframe. Responding to why Apple keeps such a tight grip on so much cash, Cook responded:

While Apple Stores across the United States are expected to have significant supplies of the iPad Air, some Apple Stores have been told to allocate a smaller number of devices for purchases handled in the early morning.

For example, depending on the store and market size, a few dozen to several dozen units of each model in every color and internet-connectivity option will be allocated for purchases before 12 noon.

Once the store-specific sales number for morning purchases is hit, some stores will not offer those models until later in the day or via Personal Pickup…

Last week, we reported that Apple has begun development of the successor to the upcoming OS X Mavericks: OS X 10.10. We reported hearing that the future operating system is internally dubbed “Syrah” (a type of wine), and now we have received evidence of the codename. Above is a screenshot of operating systems available for installation by Apple employees internally. As you can see, “Syrah” is available as an operating system newer than Mavericks and the recently released OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5…
