Bombshell. Consumer Reports can't recommend the iPhone 4 because of the antenna non-issue

http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9/21495733001?isVid=1

This one isn’t going to go over very well, we feel.  Consumer Reports is, for the first time, pulling its ‘Recommend rating’ on the iPhone due completely to the antenna non-issue that Apple plans to fix with a software update in coming weeks (or two weeks ago if you believed one report).  Somehow, even though they can’t recommend it, the iPhone 4 topped their Smartphone list again.  I guess they can’t recommend buying a smartphone of any sort?!

It’s official. Consumer Reports’ engineers have just completed testing the iPhone 4, and have confirmed that there is a problem with its reception. When your finger or hand touches a spot on the phone’s lower left side

NFL Player drops $2K on iPhone 4 from camper

Philadelphia Eagles’ star Stacy Andrews couldn’t wait to get his hands on an iPhone 4 so he payed a 15-hour line sitter two-thousand dollars to get the only iPhone 4 up for sale at Walmart’s launch.   He could have probably found a much better deal on eBay.

An interesting tidbit from the story is the girl who sold the iPhone was initially offered $1 thousand from the star but had turned it down only to have the offer doubled.

USA Today iPhone 4 Review

USA today says of the iPhone 4:

THE BOTTOM LINE: 3 1/2 (out of four) stars. As with previous iPhones, the latest model breaks new ground. FaceTime video calling on the iPhone 4 is one of those cool “seeing is believing” features, and it arrives on top of several across-the-board enhancements. And iOS 4 is a mostly terrific software upgrade.Cutting through the hype, Apple has given longtime diehards, and first-time iPhone owners, plenty to cheer about.

Pro. FaceTime video calling. Handsome thin design. Better battery life. High-definition video recording. Supersharp display. Multitasking, folders and other enhancements through iOS 4. Generally good voice quality.

Con. Battery can’t be removed. Memory can’t be expanded. No support for Adobe Flash video sites. For FaceTime to work, both parties need to be using the new iPhone and have Wi-Fi access. Occasional dropped calls.

Does Apple have a Steve Jobs succession plan?

Can Apple survive without Steve Jobs?

Apple’s co-founder is arguably the most innovative and succesful turnaround artist and tech visionary in Silicon Valley, and rumours of illness following his appearance at WWDC last week saw dollars knocked off of Apple’s share price.

With a recent report claiming Apple’s iconic designer, Jonathan Ive, has purchased a mansion in the UK, and continued jitters at the health of the Apple CEO, company-watchers are beginning to ask if Apple has a succession strategy in place. The question is, if Jobs (or Ive, come to that) were to leave Apple, does the company already have the kind of visionary leader it requires to manage the consequences of the loss of their DNA?

Apple passes Google's market cap

Apple has had quite an impressive past few years.  Even as the overall US economy has slowed, Apple keeps delivering hit after hit (MobileMe notwithstanding).  Today’s news is that Apple’s market cap has passed Google’s, the  Internet titan that emerged in the late 90s and grabbed up the majority of the search and related Internet ad market.  Apple, this year, has also passed IBM (only to get passed back by Big Blue), Citigroup, and HP.

The big target out there off of Apple’s bow is Microsoft, valued currently at over a quarter of a trillion dollars and a 60% premium over Apple’s  value.  However, with Vista floundering and a blown deal for Yahoo! we’d say it isn’t impossible that Apple could catch its long time rival in the next few years.

Mossberg gives MobileMe a dreaded "can't recommend"

Walt Mossberg, who often borders on fanboy in his reviews on Apple’s products, gave a dreaded thumbs down to Apple’s MobileMe service.  MobileMe, which has had un-Apple-like hiccups and false starts has put a dent in Apple’s brand veneer.  Honestly, we’d like to see Apple get some help from Google in this area….it obviously isn’t Apple’s stong point.

3G iPhone reviewed, nothing learned

NYTimes (Pogue), WSJ (Mossberg) and USAToday (Baig) all got their mitts on the 3G iPhone.   Amazingly, not one of them had anything original to say.  Nothing you couldn’t make up by looking at the specs or images of the iPhone and postulate.  Just FYI, we’d have had those screws off and been digging around the guts within 30 seconds of recieving the device…but maybe thats why we have to wait like all of you schmucks too.

Blackberry Bold, the 'Buick of Smartphones'

AllthingsD (which means automatically blessed by Walt) does a review of the Blackberry Bold.  It pretty much meets expectations…for a Blackberry.  Big, beautiful screen, great physical keyboard, fast internet and email access and more bells and whistles all around.  But we can’t help but feel the dissapointment in the size and feel of the thing.

‘the Bold reminded me of my grandparents’ new Buick: handsomely polished and luxuriously comfortable, with plenty of extra bells and whistles. As much as I like the plush feel of this ride, it can feel as big as a boat when I need to park or navigate narrow city streets. Likewise, the Bold’s large size affords mobile extravagances like a keyboard I could use without looking down and a leatherette-covered back panel. But when tossed in a bag or even held in my hand, the BlackBerry Bold simply feels too heavy and too big.’
