The devices that run the world’s most advanced mobile operating system

Check out our top stories on iOS Devices:

Apple Releases Xcode 4 Preview 2 to developers

Apple today released their second preview of Xcode 4 to developers. Xcode 4 is an entirely new version of Xcode for Mac and iOS re-built with many new features and enhancements. In Xcode 3 developers usually use Xcode to code their applications and Interface Builder to creature user-interfaces. Xcode 4 combines the two applications to make developing apps a much smoother experience.

Additionally Xcode 4 brings an updated interface that is quicker and easier to navigate through. Another major addition to Xcode 4 is “code-fixing,” and this allows Xcode to fix your code errors as you type.

Xcode 4 was initially previewed at this year’s WWDC and you can learn more about it at Apple’s developer website

AppleInsider swings again: Says iMacs in short supply

Site default logo image

AppleInsider is today reporting that Apple has ceased production of its current iMacs in anticipation of a new model roll out in the coming weeks/months.

a person familiar with the matter says the Mac maker is informing some of its distributors not to expect any further stock of the entry level 21.5-inch, 3.06GHz iMac, implying that production of that model has ceased.

You’ll recall their March report which had 27-inch iMac-screen sized Cinema displays and Mac Pros by June ’10 and of course Apple’s transition to AMD chips.

More info from AT&T earnings call

Some notes (and images!) from today’s AT&T earnings call, especially as they relate to Apple.  Remember how AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson didn’t think there would be much in the way of iPad 3G usage on his network? “They’ll use Wifi!” he said confidentially…A month later AT&T stopped its unlimited data plans.

From Business Insider:

  • it activated 400,000 to 500,000 3G iPads during Q2 (Which is in two months since the 3G didn’t ship until April 30th).
  • It’s “surprising” how many business customers are approaching AT&T about the iPad. Whereas business customers were famously skeptical and reluctant about the iPhone at first — and have since warmed up to it — they are apparently very eager about the iPad. AT&T said a lot of companies have iPad trials going on, and many see opportunities to use the iPad in their business as a laptop replacement. Look out, Microsoft
  • iPad users are using more data per month than the typical iPhone customer, but less than the typical laptop-card customer, which makes sense.
  • 75% to 80% of the iPad 3G subscribers are at the more expensive ($25/month) AT&T 3G data plan. Overall monthly bills in the $25-$30 range, including early customers who signed up for the $30/month unlimited plan before it was discontinued.

Gizmodo notes that AT&T has improved call quality in New York and upgrades in San Francisco are on the way.  AT&T has the PowerPoint to prove it.

FacePlant app helps you FaceTime

Site default logo image

The creators of FacePlant made something that should have come standard with FaceTime. A way to tell which of your friends is currently on WiFi and ready to FaceTime. Steve Jobs went on record to say that they did not want a buddy list for FaceTime, so FacePlant is basically Job’s enemy in that case. The app uses your contact list to show who’s available, but you can also turn on privacy for yourself if you don’t feel like seeing anyone that day.

The super-neat thing about the app is the ability to leave them video messages. Instead of leaving standard voice messages you can have some fun and leave them one with video, without killing your MMS charges. How neat! The app’s not available yet and there’s no word on cost or if the app breaks any App Store rules, but we’ll soon find out and we’ll let you know when/if/how it’s available.

AT&T activates 3.2 million iPhones in Q2, 10x iPhone 4s as 3GS

Apple’s US carrier partner, AT&T, sure has one big smile on its face — it has recorded the highest number of iPhone activations ever and is stealing swathes of cellphone market share from its competitors.

The company’s financial results announced today confirm it activated 3.2 million iPhones in its just gone quarter. (It also made $30.8 billion in revenue in the period).  That comes with much help from the iPhone, which the carrier again stated it was activating new units at a clip of 10 times the iPhone 3GS the previous year.

“On June 24, AT&T began offering iPhone 4, the most powerful iPhone yet. Preorder sales of iPhone 4 were 10 times higher than the first day of preordering for iPhone 3GS a year earlier. For the full second quarter, AT&T iPhone activations totaled 3.2 million, the most quarterly iPhone activations ever. Approximately 27 percent of those activations were for customers who were new to AT&T,” the company said.

The company also delivered substantial year-over-year wireless margin expansion, it said.

The number of 3G postpaid integrated devices on AT&T’s wireless network increased by 2.9 million to 29.7 million, an increase of 98.2 percent year over year and 10.8 percent sequentially.

iLife '10 coming in September, iWork '10 in October?

Update: the book was pulled from Amazon

Users searching through Amazon France for books about iLife ’10 might be shocked when the see “iLife ’10 for Dummies,” as the software is yet to be announced by Apple. The book created by the popular “For Dummies” series is set to launch September 23rd of this year and would coincide with back to school time in the U.S. and other parts of the world. Apple’s late on their release of iLife ’10 as iLife ’09 launched in January 2009. Via TUAW.

Additionally we’ve discovered a book about iWork ’10 on the French Amazon store. Very interestingly, this one seems to be coming sometime in October.

Although books like these in the past usually correctly hinted at Apple software refreshes, this sort of seems unlikely given the release time frame. Apple would probably not want a new product launching just months before 2011 to have to ’10 moniker. So if this is real, it probably should say ’11 or will be changed to ’11 prior to launch.

Apple posts N97 Antenna Performance Video

Site default logo image

Nokia didn’t seem to happy about Apple’s antenna comments so they stuck it to the man. Looks like Apple’s kind response is a nice little video on their website and YouTube channel that displays the Nokia N97 Mini’s antenna performance.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-b-aoZNv-q0&w=640&h=385]

Apple notes on their antenna website that the “death-grip” causes a drop from 7 to 2 bars on Nokia’s device.

Tethering Hidden in Flashlight app came, saw, probably getting removed in a few minutes [Removed]

Site default logo image

Update: It is now gone.  Hope you got it while you could!  BTW, the developer of this app is 15!

When developers could not sucessfully keep tethering on the App Store by means like Netshare, Nick Lee thought to make something stealthier. The new approach came via a basic flashlight application, Handy Light, with the SOCKS proxy functionality tethering hidden behind it. Last week, the developers posted a YouTube video detailing how to activate the functionality.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwwWlvCJuMk&w=480&h=385]

The app costs 99 cents and you can get it here. We recommend downloading it right now if you seriously want it as the privilege will be removed very soon. We’ll update on our thoughts once we get to play around with it.

Our Notes:

Had to restart my iPhone 4 to get it working. May not be a widespread need, let us know in the comments if you had to also.

New MobileMe Calendar Preview

Site default logo image

We’ve got a first look at the new MobileMe Calendar web app and and it looks and works great. We’re not going to bore you with the technical details as those are already known, instead we have screenshots!

As you’ll definately notice if you’ve used an iPad, the new calendar web app is identical to the iPad’s calendar app. It really seems like the future of Apple’s software and operating system takes design and use elements from the iPad’s iOS.
