New iPhone/AT&T information offered by analyst

Stock Analyst Turley Miller offers some of his research as it refutes many of the claims made by analyst Brian Marshall (video) yesterday.  Among them:

  • AT&T’s subsidy for the iPhone is $400, not $450 as Marshall states.  Best Buy buys 16GB iPhones from Apple for $542, and sells it for $199 with a 24 month service contract. AT&T reimburses Best Buy $400.  Therefore, Best Buy’s margin is $57/iPhone.
  • That subsidy wouldn’t change if other carriers offered the iPhone as Marshal states.  Tim Cook stated at a earnings call that it hadn’t in other countries where they went from exclusive to multiple carriers that the subsidies didn’t change.
  • iPhone users represent about 14% of AT&T

iLingual app replaces your mouth with a multi-lingual iPhone mouth

Gizmodo points us to the iLingual app (avalable in French, German and Arabic).  This one is unique because instead of just giving you a translation, it speaks the words with a mouth that may or may not resemble your own.  You can put that mouth in front of yours and everyone except Inspector Clouseau will think you are a local.  Nevermind.  Just watch the video, below.

Live Nation and iTunes launch exclusive live music program

Site default logo image

iTunes continues to move toward presenting us with immediate musical experiences, this morning announcing a deal with Live Nation under which live gig recordings from venues across the USA will be offered exclusively for sale through the Apple music service.

Distorted Loop reports the scheme will see Live Nation Studios offering exclusive recorded and filmed concerts from its network of “wired” venues for purchase and download only on iTunes.

Exclusive live recordings from OK Go, Jesse McCartney, Saving Abel, A Fine Frenzy, Duffy, Plain White T’s and Ziggy Marley, have been released this week, with many more to follow.

“We are thrilled to offer artists a new high-quality platform to share the magic of their live shows with their fans,” said Michael Rapino, President and Chief Executive Officer of Live Nation.

Live Nation, through its Studios division, regularly records concerts in more than 80 of its venues, which have been transformed into next-generation “wired” live recording studios, and will now offer a variety of them for purchase and download exclusively on iTunes.

To coincide with the program’s launch, iTunes has added a new area dedicated exclusively to live recordings, the report adds (link leads to sample recording).

Seinfeld upgrades Macs, George builds iPhone App (Video)

Seinfeld, the iconic show about nothing is back as a show-within-a-show on Curb your Enthusiasm this season.  We last saw Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates co-host those strange Windows ads but it now appears he’s gone completely over to the Apple side.

He’s upgraded his Mac to a new iMac from the old Classic he used to use (wow, it has been awhile!).  Update: That is an iPod Nano in the stereo dock as well (Thanks commenter)

In the office, he uses a MacBook Pro, natch.

And George got rich making iToilet, the iPhone app that used GPS to find the nearest clean toilet…before he lost it all to Madoff.  Video Below.

iPhone sales hit mark in South Korea as Chinese war reports emerge

Site default logo image

Apple may have experienced a fairly slow start to iPhone sales in China, but in South Korea pre-orders for the device have already reached over 15,000, reports claim.

iPhone goes on sale through local carrier, KT, on Saturday. That carrier now claims to have attracted at least 15,000 reservations so far, and that figure could rise as it only includes those made online – it does not include customers ordering an iPhone in-store.

Meanwhile the game between iPhone-carrying network, China Unicom, and the country

China Mobile playing dirty with iPhone retaillers in China?

Site default logo image

According to iPhonAsia (translations of orig appreciated), China Mobile, the biggest mobile operator in the world with over 600 million subscribers, is telling its retail partners that it cannot advertise or carry the iPhone. China Unicom, the second largest Chinese carrier, won the non-exclusive right to carry the iPhone and began selling the device last month.

The distributors that received the China Mobile notice include: Gome, Suning, Zoomflight, Dixintong (our fav!) (D-Phone), Tongwanbao and Kinfic. The China Mobile letter further warns these distributors to NOT display iPhones nor any iPhone related marketing materials.

Many cell phone distributors received formal notification that

Apple has at last managed to approve Touch DJ, a serious-seeming application for digital DJs.

Developed by Amidio the app sat for eight weeks waiting in the approval queue. Now the wait is over and you too can get started with what seems pretty impressive DJ-ing, all on your iPhone.

The app seems to realise the potential of Apple

Plaintiffs ask federal judge to force Apple to hand over the iPhone 1.1.1 source code in Jailbreaking case

Site default logo image

Computerworld has the story.  A lawsuit that has been dragging on since the iPhone 1.1.1 update that bricked a lot of jailbroken iPhones got an interesting twist this week.  The plaintiffs in the case are requesting that Apple reveal the source code of the iPhone 1.1.1 software so they can ascertain whether or not Apple maliciously bricked jailbroken iPhones or whether is was just a by-product of the new software code.

Good luck with that.

I can’t think of anything that Apple would want to give up less than that source code, even if it is two years and iterations old.

Gameloft Exec: On Android nobody is making significant revenue

Site default logo image

Bad news for those Android users who were hoping to get the same level of game access as exists on the iPhone.  It doesn’t look like it is happening.  Gameloft and companies like them have started to scale back their Android investments, according to someone who should know, Gameloft finance director Alexandre de Rochefor (Bolds are ours):

“We have significantly cut our investment in Android platform, just like … many others,” Gameloft finance director Alexandre de Rochefort said at an investor conference. Rochefort said the company has cut back on investment mostly due to weaknesses of Android’s application store. “It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone. Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android nobody is making significant revenue,” Rochefort said. Games for iPhone generated 13 percent of Gameloft’s revenue in the last quarter. “We are selling 400 times more games on iPhone than on Android,” Rochefort said.

400 to one isn’t a good ratio for Android no matter how big a lead the iPhone has had. via MR

Verizon Droids already dropping in price. Dell sells for $120

Update: Amazon has dropped Droid to $150 as well

You might be able to find a refurbished iPhone for $49 off…but only if if it is refurbished.  Even chain discounter Walmart only takes $2 off the price of the iPhone and there are never sales.  Apple simply doesn’t discount it, ever (we’ll see about Black Friday).

Verizon/Motorola have taken a different approach with their top handset.  Merely a week after launch, the Droid has already lost $80 in value over at Dell who are selling it for $120 with plan.  This follows news that the Palm Pre is selling for $79.99 at Amazon (Pixie is $24.99 – not even enough to qualify for free shipping – zoikes).

Why are Verizon and Motorola so quick to discount the Droid when apparently it has been flying off of shelves?

Amazon Slashes Palm Pre To $79.99 as smartphone wars intensify

Perhaps signal that sales are slowing, Amazon has slashed the price of the Palm Pre to $79.99 with a two-year service plan from Sprint and now include free activation of the phone in the box.

Amazon is also offering the Palm Pixi for just $24.99 (with free activation). In contrast, Sprint currently sells the Pre for $149.99 and the Pixi for $99.99.

Palm shipped an update to the Palm Pre

Flip cameras to get Wifi, take on iPod Nanos

Site default logo image

Latest word out of Cisco is that they haven’t yet ceded the ultra portable video camera throne to Apple’s iPod Nano.  In fact, they have a Wifi update planned for the Flip line.  The new Flips will be able to upload videos to (assuming here) Youtube and Facebook type sites for immediate sharing with friends and family.  Still pictures should also be uploadable as well.  Pocket-Lint is also saying it won’t have a touch screen viewfinder and it should be an early 2010 release.

Details are thin on the ground at the moment, but we’ve been informed by a Cisco spokesperson that the new model will feature “a large screen that slides to reveal the record and menu buttons underneath” allowing users to see what is going on when they are recording video.

Overall, this leak looks like bad timing for Cisco.  Having a new product outed the week before Black Friday isn’t a good strategy.   To celebrate, Amazon has marked down the current Flip models by considerable margins.

And if you are into the Flip, you might want to check out the slightly more expensive but way cooler Casio Exilm EX-G1 camera.  It is waterproof, takes 12 megapixel stills and wide format video.
