John Sculley on Steve Jobs: 'I have tremendous admiration'

Site default logo image

While we wait for WWDC 2010 to open for business in just over three hours, spare a thought for former Apple CEO, John Sculley, who tells The Daily Beast all about how much he regrets firing Steve Jobs.

Sculley still thinks their partnership could have worked — if Jobs had been the CEO, rather than the other way round.

The report also includes comments from other members of the Apple board in 1985, who discuss Steve jobs as he was then and as he is now. And we find out where they are today.

This was the board which fired Jobs in 1985 — he left to form NeXT, and came back to save the company he founded a dozen years later.

WWDC: AT&T makes it easier to upgrade to next-gen iPhone

Yet more signs (if more are required) suggesting the next-model iPhone is on the way perhaps later today, US carrier AT&T has widened its upgrade eligibility scheme, opening up an upgrade opportunity for more existing users.

MacRumors tells us the new scheme means several readers who previously were ineligible to purchase a new subsidized iPhone now find that they are eligible.

Existing AT&T customers can check if they have seen their status change at http://wireless.att.com by clicking on “Check Upgrade Options” after they log in.

As in the example above, the new scheme could mean many customers can upgrade to a new phone much sooner at a lesser penalty.

AT&T continues to make moves seemingly preparing for a new model iPhone and more diverse carrier availability in the US.

WWDC 2010 (live)

WWDC 2010 eve is upon us and we’re getting pumped to see what Apple has on offer for us this year.  We have a pretty strong suspicion that a certain iPhone 4/HD will make an appearance.  Safari 5 sounds pretty likely with an update to 10.6.4 and Xcode as well.

Will we see a sneak peak at Mac OS 10.7?  With an XCode update, our hopes are high.

Mac hardware?  We’d love to see something but aren’t sure this is the right venue.  Mac Minis, MacBook Airs and Mac Pros are all “due”.

The same goes for AppleTV.  We’d love to see an answer to GoogleTV — a take 3– but we’re not sure Apple is ready with that one yet.

The star of the show will of course be iPhone OS 4.  Has Apple had enough time to integrate Siri voice recognition/Artificial Intelligence into the OS? Will we have video iChat?  So many questions…

And what will be the show stopper?  The stuff Jobs is talking about in all of those emails?  We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Oh, and of course we’ll try to have audio/video again this year – but no promises, OK?

Now what to do with your old iPhone?

What are the chances that Apple releases Android Boot Camp for iPhone tomorrow? ZERO. But here’s something fun to do with that old iPhone once you get your mugs on the iPhone 4/HD:

Talk about fragmentation! You’ll have a more recent version of Android than any shipping HTC or Motorola phone. P.S. Dude, get a better camera!

Safari 5 to be launched at WWDC with Safari Reader?

MacGeneration reports that Apple is planning on a major update to Safari at this week’s WWDC.  Safari 5 will apparently include a Reader functionality that will make web page reading easier by extracting and organizing the text.  The search field will now include Bing as well as Yahoo and Google.

Safari 5 will render Javascript up to 25% faster bringing it in line with recent improvements to Chrome and Opera.  It will also include more DNS prefetching and caching to help with speed.  HTML5 support will also be improved.

Safari Developer tools will also be improved with a new Timeline Panel with keyboard shortcuts.  There was no word on a possible Safari extensions API.

MacOS 10.6.4 is also ready to go with the following improvements:

WWDC 2010: Apple puts up the flags for annual developer event

Apple is putting up its flags and bunting for its annual developers garden party (without a garden) WWDC 2010 at the Moscone Centre in San Francisco next week.Images are already spreading widely across the Internet as avid snappers grab pictures of the signs going up.

As per usual, eagle-eyed Apple watchers hope to catch a glimpse at a poster going up that depicts a hiterto unknown product, service or slogan. And as per usual, Apple
